0. Introduction:
Globalization is the backdrop of my life. It’s not a distant concept I
read about; it's the framework that defines my choices, my education, and
my dreams for the future. As a student of International Business, I see its
threads woven into everything, from the products I use to the career path
I am building. This reflection is my attempt to understand this force, to
analyze how it personally affects me, and to honestly evaluate the doors it
opens alongside the new pressures it creates.
1. Understanding the Concept of Globalization:
In simple terms, globalization is the world becoming more connected.
It’s the process that allows ideas, money, products, and culture to flow
across borders with increasing ease. For me, it breaks down into three
tangible parts:
Economic Connection: This is about companies operating globally.
It's why Vietnam is a manufacturing hub for Samsung and why we can buy
anything from American tech to European luxury goods online.
Cultural Exchange: This is the spread of culture, from the food we
eat to the movies we watch. The global rise of K-pop is a prime example,
but it's more than just music—it's a whole cultural wave.
Technological Bridge: This is the most crucial part. The internet
and smartphones are the engines of modern globalization, making
communication and access to information instant and borderless.
2. Analyzing the Personal Impact of Globalization:
This connected world directly shapes my daily life and my ambitions
to reach the goal.
Education and Future Plans: My goal is to pursue a Master's
degree in Europe, a path that is only possible because of
globalization. Universities actively seek international students, and
my undergraduate degree in International Business from Vietnam is
a stepping stone recognized abroad. I’m not just preparing for a job
in Hanoi; I’m building a profile—improving my IELTS score,
researching programs in Management and International Trade—to
compete on a global stage. Platforms like LinkedIn allow me to
connect with current students at schools I’m interested in, making
my dream feel attainable.
Daily Life and Altered Perceptions: My consumption habits are
global. My phone is Chinese, my music is international, and my
favorite coffee chains are American. But a more profound impact
came from cinema. Watching films like Bong Joon-ho's Parasite did
more than entertain me. It peeled back the glossy layer of Hallyu
(the Korean Wave) and showed me a complex society grappling with
class inequality and social paradoxes. It was a powerful reminder
that a nation's legal and social systems are often messy and deeply
nuanced, a stark contrast to the polished, unified image presented
by its pop culture exports. This taught me to look beyond
stereotypes and seek a deeper, more critical understanding of the
countries I study and hope to work with.
A Broadened Mindset: My worldview has expanded far beyond
my immediate surroundings, as social media and online connections
have opened a window to the entire world. Through scrolling
through trends emerging from Tokyo to Brazil and chatting with
friends across borders, I gain genuine glimpses into diverse daily
lives and perspectives. The most exciting part is learning directly
from global thinkers through podcasts and TED Talks, which feel like
personal mentoring sessions that break down complex ideas into
relatable stories. This exposure has deepened my understanding of
different cultures, teaching me that "thinking globally" means
celebrating diverse ways of living while recognizing how we are all
connected in this beautifully messy world.
3. Evaluating Opportunities and Challenges:
This globalized world presents our generation with unprecedented
opportunities while simultaneously demanding that we navigate complex
new challenges in our daily lives.
a) Opportunities:
• Limitless Learning: Online platforms give me access to world-
class knowledge beyond traditional classrooms. I'm currently taking
data analysis and digital marketing courses on Coursera to develop
practical skills that complement my academic studies. These courses,
taught by professors from top international universities, allow me to
learn at my own pace while gaining credentials recognized globally.
• Borderless Career Paths: The concept of a traditional career
path has transformed completely. I'm preparing for opportunities
ranging from working with Vietnamese companies expanding
overseas to joining international organizations seeking Southeast
Asian expertise. The rise of remote work has further eliminated
geographical barriers, allowing me to consider positions with global
teams while remaining in Vietnam.
• Personal Development: Constant exposure to diverse cultures
through social media, international friendships, and global content
has significantly enhanced my adaptability and cross-cultural
communication skills. These soft skills have proven valuable even in
local contexts, as Vietnam's business environment becomes
increasingly integrated with global markets.
b) Challenges:
• Intense Global Competition: Standing out requires more than
academic credentials. I'm investing time in learning additional
languages like French and developing digital skills including video
editing and personal branding. Building a strong online presence
and portfolio has become essential to compete in the international
job market.
• Cultural Identity Negotiation: Balancing traditional Vietnamese
values with global influences presents an ongoing challenge. I
sometimes find myself torn between local expectations and
international perspectives, particularly when making decisions
about career paths and personal development. This cultural
negotiation affects everything from my communication style to my
long-term goals.
• Economic Interdependence Risks: Global economic fluctuations
now directly impact local job prospects. Understanding international
market trends and their potential effects on Vietnam's economy has
become crucial for my career planning. This interconnectedness
means that economic events happening abroad can significantly
affect opportunities available to graduates here.
4. Conclusion:
Globalization, for me, is the air I breathe as a student of international
business. It has given me a window to the world and the tools to reach for
it, transforming my perspective from local to global in both my personal
and professional aspirations. It has made me ambitious but also more
thoughtful and critical, aware that every opportunity comes with
corresponding challenges that require careful navigation. The path to a
Master's degree abroad is paved with both incredible opportunities and
the need to constantly acquire new skills and navigate complex
challenges. My task is to embrace this connected world thoughtfully,
leveraging its opportunities for growth while staying true to my own
identity and critically engaging with its complexities. This balance
between global ambition and local roots, between embracing change and
preserving values, defines my generation's experience of globalization—a
journey of constant learning, adaptation, and self-discovery that prepares
us for a world without borders but still requires us to know where we come
from.
