What is the “Statement of the Problem” in research?

The statement of the problem is the part of your research that explains what issue or gap needs to be
solved or studied.
It answers the question: “What is wrong, missing, or needs improvement that my study will focus on?”

In simple words, it tells the readers:

 What the problem is

 Why it is a problem

 For whom is it a problem

 What will happen if it’s not solved

 How your research will help

It gives direction to the whole study.

How to Write a Good Statement of the Problem

A good problem statement is:

1. Clear

Use simple and direct words. Avoid long and confusing sentences.

2. Specific

Focus on one main issue. Show the exact context, group, or situation.

3. Based on evidence

Show that the problem is real—use observations, data, or past studies to prove it exists.

4. Shows the gap

Explain what is not yet known, not yet done, or what needs improvement.

5. Leads to the research questions

The problem must guide what your study aims to answer.

Simple Guide (Formula) for Writing It

You can follow this easy structure:

Paragraph 1 — Present the Problem


Describe the issue clearly.

Example:
“Many Grade 12 students struggle to finish their academic tasks on time.”

Paragraph 2 — Show Evidence

Explain why you think the problem truly exists.

Example:
“Based on teacher records, 60% of students submit requirements late.”

Paragraph 3 — Explain Its Effects

Tell how the problem affects people or learning.

Example:
“This leads to lower grades and increased stress among students.”

Paragraph 4 — Identify the Gap

Explain what is missing or what needs to be studied.

Example:
“However, there is limited research on the specific factors causing these delays.”

Paragraph 5 — Connect to Your Study

Show how your research will help address the gap.

Example:
“This study aims to identify the main reasons why students struggle with time management.”

Short Example of a Good Problem Statement

“Many Grade 12 students in ABC Senior High School often submit their tasks late. School records from
the last two quarters show that more than half of the students miss deadlines at least twice a month.
This affects their academic performance and increases their stress levels. Although teachers have tried
reminders and consultations, there is still little research on what actually causes students’ poor time
management. Therefore, this study aims to determine the specific factors that contribute to late
submissions among Grade 12 students.”
