Introduction - Growth and Development of Tourism

Tourism refers to the act and process of spending time away from home in
pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure while making use of
commercial services. It has a rich history and has become one of the world’s
most important economic activities. Tourism emerged in western Europe in
the 17th century, although it has roots in Classical antiquity. Unlike
exploration, where travelers venture into uncharted territories, tourists
typically follow established paths and benefit from existing infrastructure.
Tourism in India holds immense potential as a significant contributor to the
country’s economy, despite facing various challenges. India, being an
immensely beautiful country with rich heritage, naturally serves as a spot of
extreme tourism. Due to restriction related to COVID-19, The number of+
Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India during 2021 decreased to 1.52 million
as compared to 2.74 million in 2020, registering a negative growth of 44.5%.
The two states with the most domestic tourists visiting are Tamil Nadu and
Uttar Pradesh, with 140.65 million and 86.12 million, respectively.
Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have the highest numbers of foreign tourist
visits, with 1.26 million and 1.23 million, respectively. Value of travel market
of India is expected to double from FY 2018 to FY 2027, from 61 bn USD to
125 bn USD. So, with time and internet, India’s tourists increase by the
minute. With better city and wildlife management, India can overcome
France to become the most visited country in the world. India’s domestic
tourism remains robust with almost 1 billion domestic visits. As the sector
adapts to changing circumstances, it continues to evolve, offering exciting
opportunities for both travelers and the Indian economy.

CONCLUSION -

Foreign Tourism significantly helps boost the GDP of a country, as these

foreign tourists initiate a flow of cash from one country to another, and
the money remains in the tourist country, which obviously strengthens a
country’s economy. Along with that, when tourists visit a country, they
tend to make a series of purchases, which supports the local industry and,
in the process, these tourists end up helping many industries to survive
the competition put forth by their international counterparts. The money
that these businesses receive also goes to the employees, so, with an
increase in tourism, demand increases, which leads to a hike in the
employment rate in a country. Studies show that a high unemployment
rate suggests that there are fewer employment opportunities available
and the opportunity cost of choosing crime over legitimate work is low,
making motivation to commit crimes higher leading to an increase in
crimes. So, tourism does have an indirect impact on crime rates too. With
tourism, one learns to appreciate the beauty and culture of a place.
So, tourism helps make the world and its people happier and more
carefree. Tourism is the apt way to relieve your stress by going on a
vacation and indirectly help the destination country by being a better
tourist.
