Preparedness is important in a tsunami because it helps people know what to do and stay safe during
the disaster. Being prepared can prevent injuries and save lives when large waves suddenly hit the
shore. Having an evacuation plan, knowing high ground areas, and keeping an emergency kit ready can
protect families. The hazard most likely to affect a family is strong flooding, which can destroy houses
and sweep away belongings. Tsunamis can happen quickly, so being prepared is very important to stay
safe.

I learned how to keep my family safe during a tsunami. I now know the importance of moving to higher
ground and staying away from the coast. I also learned what each family member should do to help each
other. Having an emergency kit ready is very important too. This knowledge will help my family stay safe
and calm if a tsunami happens.
