BM1200 QUANTITATIVE METHODS AND ANALYTICS
TUTORIAL #7
1) Consider the following hypothesis test:
H0: μ ≤ 25
HA: μ > 25
A sample of 40 provided a sample mean of 26.4. The population standard deviation
is 6.
a) Compute the value of the appropriate test statistic.
b) What is the p-value? (Hint: The p-value does not have to be precise, you can
locate and use its approximate position in a table and compare it with the
significance level. For example, you can answer by stating that the p-value is
between 0.005 and 0.010 and then compare it against the significance level.)
c) At α = 0.05, what is your conclusion?
2) Suppose you are trying to show that more than 25% of students use ride-sharing
platforms such as Uber and Lyft. To check the validity of this claim, you decide to
survey 100 students, which revealed that 28 of them use ride-sharing.
a) Formulate the null and alternate hypotheses.
b) What is the p-value for the hypothesis test? (Note: The p-value does not have to
precise, you can locate and use its approximate position in a table and compare it
with the significance level.)
c) At the significance level α = 0.05, do you conclude that there is evidence that
more than 25% of students use ride sharing?
d) Suppose that your survey instead resulted in 34 students out of 100 using ride
sharing. Performing a similar analysis, what would your conclusion be at the 0.05
significance level?
3) The Coca-Cola Company reported that the mean per capita annual sales of its
beverages in the United States was 423 eight-ounce servings. Suppose you want to
show that annual Coca-Cola product consumption is higher than 423 servings in
1
Atlanta, Georgia, the location of Coca-Cola’s corporate headquarters. A sample of 36
individual from the Atlanta area showed a sample mean annual consumption of 460.4
eight-ounce servings with a standard deviation of s=101.9 servings.
a) State the appropriate hypotheses.
b) Compute the value of the appropriate test statistic.
c) What is the p-value? (Note: Approximate p-values are sufficient.)
Test at α = 0.05. What do you conclude?
