1.
Project Overview
In real-world engineering practice, technical knowledge alone is not enough. Engineers must be able
to plan, schedule, budget, and manage resources effectively.
In this project, you will act as a Project Manager and Design Engineer tasked to plan the construction
of your own dream house.
You will prepare a complete Project Management Plan, including:
Project scope definition
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Gantt Chart
Project schedule
Cost estimates
Resource planning
Basic risk analysis
This project simulates real construction project planning practices.
2. Project Objectives
By the end of this project, students should be able to:
1. Apply project management principles to a construction project.
2. Develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
3. Prepare a Gantt chart and project schedule.
4. Estimate direct construction costs.
5. Identify project risks and mitigation strategies.
6. Present a professional engineering project plan.
3. Project Scenario
You are hired as the Project Manager to construct your Dream House on a residential lot in the
Philippines.
Assume:
Lot Area: 150–300 sqm
House Type: Bungalow or Two-Storey Residential
Floor Area: 80–200 sqm
Location: Choose a realistic Philippine setting (urban or provincial)
You may assume reasonable construction rates based on current Philippine standards (e.g.,
₱20,000–₱35,000 per sqm, depending on finish level).
4. Required Project Components
A. Project Description (10%)
Include:
House concept and features
Number of rooms
Total floor area
Structural system (RC frame, CHB walls, etc.)
Target construction duration
Target budget
B. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) (15%)
Create a hierarchical breakdown of major work components:
Example:
1. Site Preparation
2. Foundation Works
3. Structural Works
4. Roofing
5. Architectural Works
6. Plumbing Works
7. Electrical Works
8. Finishing Works
9. Final Inspection & Turnover
Use at least 3 levels of breakdown.
C. Project Schedule (20%)
Prepare:
Activity List
Duration per activity
Predecessor relationships
Critical Path (optional but encouraged)
Use:
MS Excel
MS Project
Primavera
Or any scheduling software
D. Gantt Chart (15%)
The Gantt chart must:
Show all major activities
Show duration (in weeks or months)
Reflect logical sequencing
Show start and finish dates
Identify critical activities (if applicable)
E. Cost Estimates (20%)
Prepare a simplified cost estimate including:
1. Direct Costs
Materials
Labor
Equipment (if applicable)
2. Indirect Costs
Permits
Overhead
Contingency (5–10%)
Provide:
Unit cost assumptions
Cost per square meter reference
Grand Total Project Cost
Include summary table:
Work Category Estimated Cost (₱)
Foundation
Structural
Roofing
Finishing
MEP
Total
F. Resource Planning (10%)
Identify:
Required manpower (foreman, mason, carpenter, electrician, plumber)
Estimated crew size
Equipment needed (mixer, scaffolding, etc.)
G. Risk Management Plan (10%)
Identify at least 5 project risks, such as:
Weather delays
Material price fluctuation
Labor shortage
Permit delays
Design changes
Provide mitigation strategies.
5. Submission Format
Written Report (Hard Copy)
Cover Page
Table of Contents
Project Description
WBS
Schedule
Gantt Chart
Cost Estimates
Resource Plan
Risk Analysis
Conclusion
Length: 15–40 pages
Font: Times New Roman, 12
Spacing: 1.5
Margins: Standard
6. Evaluation Rubric
Criteria Weight
Technical Accuracy 25%
Completeness 20%
Scheduling Logic 15%
Cost Realism 15%
Professional Presentation of Report 15%
Creativity & Feasibility 10%
7. Important Engineering Notes
Unrealistic budgets will be penalized.
Sequencing errors (e.g., roofing before structural works) will reduce grades.
Estimates must reflect realistic Philippine construction practices.
Academic honesty is strictly observed.
8. Optional Bonus (Up to +5%)
Include Cash Flow (S-Curve)
Include Simple Network Diagram (CPM)
Include 2D floor plan or 3D rendering
