Gen Math Functions

A function is a relation where each input corresponds to one unique output, represented as y = f(x). The document provides examples of functions using sets of ordered pairs and equations, and discusses the vertical line test to determine if a relation is a function. It also includes activities to identify whether given relations are functions.

FUNCTIONS

A FUNCTION is a relation
where every input has one
and only one output

For every value of x

corresponds to a unique
value of y.
A RELATION is a set of
ordered pairs
Example:
{(4, -2), (4, 2), (36, -6), (36,
6), (49, -7), (49, 7)}
We can also say that
“y is a function of x”
Y=f(x)
Function Represented
by a Set of Ordered
Pairs
Example 1: Let x consists of four
students and y consists of their
grades, respectively, in a certain
test in algebra.

x = {Joe, Paul, Romy, Tom}

y = {80, 78, 95, 85}
Example 2:
If f = {(1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 6),
(7, 8)},

Example 3: If g = {(2, 3),

(5, 6), (7, 8), (2, 4)},
Which of the following sets of ordered
pairs represent functions?
A= {(0,-2), (1,4), (-3,3), (5,0)}
B = {(-4,0), (2,-3), (2,-5)}
C = {(-5,1), (2,1), (-3,1), (0,1)}
D = {(3,-4),(3,-2),(0,1),(2,-1)}
E = {(0,3),(3,0),(1,2), (2,1)}
F = {(1,3)}
