BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::

Architectural design refers to the organization of the

elements and components that make up a
building or structure. It entails the way that they
function coherently as a whole and give the structure
form and functionality.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::

The current architectural design relies more on

sophisticated, innovative technology in the
building design.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::

 WHAT is BIM?
BIM is theprocess of generating, storing, managing,
exchanging, and sharing building information in
an interoperable and reusable way.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::

BIM is a virtual process that incorporates all

aspects, disciplines, and systems of a facility into a
single virtual model, allowing all members of the
design team (owners, architects, engineers,
contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers) to
collaborate more accurately and efficiently than
traditional processes.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Project life cycle
> Design phase,
> Construction phase, and
> Operation phase
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Design process in architecture::

> Design, new build

* the building information model contains precise geometry
and relevant data needed to support the design;
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Design process in architecture::

> Construction
* procurement, fabrication, and construction activities
required to realize the building;
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Design process in architecture::

> Operation
* maintenance, operational assessment
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM maturity levels

BIM maturity levels define the technological progress

achieved in the AEC sector according to the degree
of collaboration and information sharing between
the different stakeholders involved in a project.

 BIM maturity levels
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Elements of BIM
o Processes: refer to the specific order of work
activities with a beginning, an end, and a
clear identification of the inputs and outputs
of each stage.

o Policies: refer to the principles and rules to

guide the decision-making process. Policies
are framed to develop standards and best
practices to minimize disputes between the
parties involved.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Elements of BIM
o Information: There are two types of
information: models and documents.
Models are digital data that are the
representation, reproduction, or simplified
version of an object, road, bridge, building etc.
They are stored in a file format and can be
exchanged and shared.

Documents are the digital version of papers,

drawings, prints, images and video.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 Elements of BIM
o People: make the difference and therefore
are the most important. Effective
management by people can only lead to
successful BIM.

o Technologies: refer to the software and

hardware tools used to manage the various
stages of the Building Information Modeling
process.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM Standards

ISO 19650 (Organization of information on construction works – Management

of information in the use of BIM) is an international standard that regulates the
management of information on the entire life cycle of a built asset, using
Building Information Modeling (BIM).
Defines collaborative processes for the effective management of information
during the delivery and operation of built assets.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM Standards
ISO 19650
> part 1 – general concepts and principles;
> part 2 – delivery phase of real estate assets;
> part 3 – development processes and information management
during the construction phase;
> part 4 – information exchanges;
> part 5 – information security requirements.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM Dimensions
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM Application
Visualization: 3D renderings can be easily generated in house with
little additional effort.
Fabrication/shop drawings: It is easy to generate shop drawings for
various building systems.
Cost estimating: BIM software has built-in cost estimating features.
Material quantities are automatically extracted and updated when
any changes are made in the model.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM Application
Construction sequencing: A building information model can be
effectively used to coordinate material ordering, fabrication, and
delivery schedules for all building components.
Conflict, interference, and collision detection: Because building
information models are created to scale in 3D space, all major
systems can be instantly and automatically checked for
interferences. For example, this process can verify that piping does
not intersect with steel beams, ducts, or walls.
BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING::
 BIM Application
Forensic analysis: A building information model can be easily
adapted to graphically illustrate potential failures, leaks,
evacuation plans, and so forth.
Facilities management: Facilities management departments can use
it for renovations, space planning, and maintenance operations.
