Lowest Common Multiple (LCM):
The Lowest Common Multiple is the smallest number common in both multiples of a given number.
Q. What is the LCM of 6 and 8?
Q. TRUE / FALSE You always get a common multiple of a pair of numbers by multiplying them together.
Q. Why have I not asked you to find the Highest Common Multiple yet?
Square Numbers
and Square Roots
Square numbers are called square numbers
because you can make a square out of
that number of smaller squares.
I can make a large square out of 9
small squares like this:
But I can’t make a larger square out
of
10 small squares, however hard I try!
Multiplying a number by itself gives
you
a square number.
So 2 x 2 = 4 and 3 x 3 = 9.
4 and 9 are square
numbers.
What are the square numbers
of these multiplications?
1x1=
2x2=
7x7=
8x8=
The square root of a number is the factor that
when multiplied by itself gives the square
number.
So if 8 x 8 = 64 then the square root of 64 = 8
In maths we can write this as:
8² = 64
and
√64 = 8
Order of operations
If you have multiple operations in a sum you
have to do them in a specific order.
Commutative Property
Commutative means that the order does not make
any difference.
a+b=b+a a•b=b•a
Examples
4+5=5+4
2•3=3•2
The commutative property does not work for
subtraction or division.
Array method of multiplying
Associative Property
Associative means that the grouping does
not make any difference.
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c) (ab) c = a (bc)
Examples
(1 + 2) + 3 = 1 + (2 + 3)
(2 • 3) • 4 = 2 • (3 • 4)
The associative property does not work for
subtraction or division.
Rounding
- To the nearest 10, 100, 1000 etc.
- You look at the digit after the one you want to
round
- When a number ends with 0-4 you round down
- When a number ends with 5-9 you round up
- Example: Round 32 to the nearest ten
Rounding to significant figures
If I round to ____ significant figures then I am only
interested in the first ___ digits of the number. And
the rest of the digits change to 0
Example: Round 2347 to 2 significant figures.
23/47 = 4 rounds a number down.
2300
