Assignment 2b: Wastewater Characteristics
Assume suitable data whenever required.
1. A 2% solution of a sewage sample is kept at an incubation temperature of 20°C. If
initial DO and final DO values after the 5 day incubation period are 8.5 mg/l and 5.5
mg/l, respectively, calculate the BOD5 of the sample.
2. The BOD5 at 20°C of wastewater is 210 mg/l. What will be the ultimate BOD? What
will be the 5 day BOD if the sample had been incubated at 15°C? Assume
deoxygenation coefficient as 0.23 day−1.
3. At 20°C, a sample of sewage has BOD5 of 350 mg/l. If the test temperature is 30°C, in
how many days will the same value of BOD be obtained?
4. The average sewage from a city is 9510−6 l/day and the average BOD5 is 300 mg/l
against a standard of 75 mg/day per capita at 20°C. Find population equivalent.
5. The ultimate BOD of a river water sample is 20 mg/l. The BOD rate constant (natural
log) is 0.15/day. What is the remaining BOD percentage after 7 days?
6. Calculate theoretical oxygen demand and organic carbon concentration of water that
contains 200mg/l of glucose (C6H12O6) and 25mg/l of benzene (C6H6).
7. Following observations were made on a 3% dilution of wastewater sample: DO of
aerated water used for dilution = 3mg/l; DO of diluted sample after 5 days of incubation
= 0.8mg/l; and DO of original sample = 0.6mg/l. Calculate 5 day and ultimate BOD.
Take Kd (base 10) equalling 0.1 day−1.
8. The average daily waste flow from a factory in an industrial estate is 75 m3 of stearic
acid (C17H35COOH) of concentration 150mg/l and 9 m3 of capric acid ( C9H19COOH)
of concentration 500 mg/l. Calculate the theoretical oxygen demand and 5 day BOD of
the combined wastes. Calculate the minimum amount of nitrogen and phosphorus
required in the waste stream for it to be amenable to biological oxidation treatment.
Assume that BOD5 equals 0.7ThOD. Further, BOD5:N:P ratio of 100:5:1 is required
in wastewater for it to be amenable to biological oxidation treatment.
9. A control sample bottle containing seeded dilution water has a drop of 1.5mg/l in its
DO over 5 days incubation. The BOD bottle (300 ml with 20 ml of wastewater and the
remaining seeded water) has a DO drop of 6.8mg/l. Compute the BOD5 of the sample.
