FDA / SDA COMPUTER NOTES – ADVANCED VERSION (ENGLISH)

1. What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic device that accepts data, processes it, and produces meaningful
information.
Characteristics: Speed, Accuracy, Storage, Versatility, Diligence.
Basic Components: Input Unit, Processing Unit, Output Unit, Storage Unit.
2. Computer Generations
1st (Vacuum Tubes), 2nd (Transistors), 3rd (Integrated Circuits), 4th (Microprocessors), 5th (AI &
Robotics).
3. Number Systems
Binary (Base 2), Octal (Base 8), Decimal (Base 10), Hexadecimal (Base 16). Example: Binary 1010
= Decimal 10.
4. Memory Types
Primary: RAM, ROM.
Secondary: Hard Disk, SSD, CD/DVD.
Cache Memory: High-speed memory in CPU.
Virtual Memory: Hard disk used as RAM.
5. Software Types
System Software (Windows, Linux), Application Software (MS Office), Utility Software (Antivirus).
Firmware: Software stored permanently in hardware.
6. Input and Output Devices
Input: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Microphone.
Output: Monitor, Printer, Speaker, Plotter.
Printer Types: Impact (Dot Matrix) and Non-impact (Laser, Inkjet).
7. Operating System
Functions: File, Process, Memory, Device Management, and User Interface.
Examples: Windows, Linux, Android, macOS.
Types: Single-user, Multi-user, Multitasking, Real-time.
8. Microsoft Office
MS Word: Tables, Mail Merge, Formatting, Shortcut Keys (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+S, etc.).
MS Excel: Functions (SUM, AVERAGE, IF), Charts, Pivot Tables.
