Tutorial Problems 2

The document presents a series of tutorial problems related to soil mechanics, focusing on calculations involving moisture content, density, void ratio, porosity, and degree of saturation for various soil samples. It includes specific data for each problem, such as mass, volume, and specific gravity, and requires the application of formulas to derive the necessary parameters. Additionally, it involves drawing flow curves from liquid limit tests and calculating plasticity indices.

Tutorial Problems - 2

1. The mass of a moist soil sample having a volume of 0.0057 m³ is 10.5 kg. The moisture
content (w) and the specific gravity of soil solids (Gₛ) were determined to be 13% and 2.68
respectively. Determine.

a. Moist density, ρₜ (kg/m³)

b. Dry density, ρd (kg/m³)
c. Void ratio, e
d. Porosity, n
e. Degree of saturation, S (%)

2. The moist mass of 0.028 m³ of soil is 55.4 kg. If the moisture content is 12% and the specific
gravity of soil solids is 2.72, find the following:

a. moist unit weight (kN/m³)

b. dry unit weight (kN/m³)
c. void ratio
d. porosity
e. degree of saturation (%)
f. volume occupied by water (m³)

3. The following data were obtained from the liquid and plastic limit tests for a soil Liquid Limit
Test:

Number of blows (N) | Moisture content (%)

No of Moisture
Blows content
(N) (%)
15 42.0
20 40.8
28 39.1

Plastic Limit Test: Moisture content = 18.7%

a. Draw the flow curve from the liquid limit test data and find the liquid limit.
b. What is the plasticity index of the soil?

4. For a sand, the maximum and minimum possible void ratios were determined in the
laboratory to be 0.94 and 0.33, respectively. Find the moist unit weight of sand in kN/m³
compacted in the field at a relative density of 60% and moisture content of 10%. Given: G ₛ =
2.65. Also calculate the maximum and minimum possible dry unit weights that the sand can
have.
5. Determine the moisture content, void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation of a soil core
sample.

Also determine the dry unit weight of the material.

Given that:

▪ Weight of soil sample is 1013 g

▪ Volume of soil sample is 585 cm³
▪ Specific gravity of soil, Gₛ is 2.65
▪ Dry weight of soil is 904 g
