Circular saw

Building the MIP (Main Instrument Panel) is one of the most important and
visually effective parts of any sim build. These designs and plans are based on a
full size 737 cockpit. My MIP screens (Qty 3) & Lower Eicas (Qty 1) are running
from an old desktop PC networked to my main computer via an ethernet switch.
Router The monitors used in my MIP are the following:

• FO & CPT PFD/ND: 18.5” 1366x768 (Pixels 16:9 ratio - Qty 2)

• Upper EICAS: 14.1” 1024x768 Pixels (4:3 ratio - Qty 1)
• Lower EICAS: 12” 1024x768 Pixels (4:3 ratio - Qty 1 - Located in the
FMC Console)
The computers are connected and use the following software:

Orbital Sander • Prepar3D (Core Sim Program)

• PROSIM 737 (Flight Model Physics & Logic, Including interface software)
• FSWIDE (Networking of PC’s with FSUIPC)
• FSUIPC (Data Transfer protocol)
• Mobiflight (Interface software between hardware and software)
The best way I found to produce these plans are as follows:
Compound Mitre
Saw
• Take your time.
• Measure the dimensions from a master corner. Measure each point
across and along, like a coordinate system. This way, every point angle will
be in the exact position. There is too much error in measuring a distance,
then an angle, and measuring another distance. Use the angles given just
for confirmatory checking. Most cuts are at 90 Degrees, but there are quite
a few that have angled cuts. Make sure you check if the saw blade needs
to be angled before cutting.

BEFORE YOU START

Please understand that these are my designs and plans. Each part or module of the sim is designed
to fit perfectly together. Fusion CAD proves the designs, as do my sim builds. These can be seen on
my YouTube Channel. There are a few differences that differ from the real aircraft. They are
designed this way for ease of build and making the parts as universal as possible.
Difference 1: The bottom of the MIP

The Real Aircraft Design The standard size monitor interferes with the base of the MIP

This Design change was carried out

to allow various different size
monitors to fit in the MIP easily. It
allows the bottom of the monitors to
hang down away from the upper
control panel electronic components.

The Modified Design

VERSION 1.0 2
[Link]

Difference 2: The FMC Bay

The Real Aircraft Design The Extended Design

This Design change was also carried out to allow

various different size monitors to fit in the
console easily. If you stick with the real aircraft
design, you require a specialised size monitor
which is small and expensive. This does mean
however; your pedestal and throttle unit will be
4cm further aft than the real aircraft.

VERSION 1.0 3
[Link]

Creating your own panels is very satisfying. You will find all the measurements here in this file, and
Fusion 360 CAD files can be found on the website [Link]. Utilising the CAD designs
will allow you to build to my specifications or edit the files/designs as you require.
Without a CNC or laser machine, this option can be quite difficult. I appreciate that sometimes it’s
easier to buy the face panels from another vendor, which will often work out cheaper, less time
consuming, and produces a perfect finish.
In taking this 3rd party route, which there is nothing wrong, and I highly suggest it. You stray away
from my designs, and then things may not fit as planned. That said, this should only be an issue with
individual MIP panels. The MIP size and surrounding structure should still be the same as the real
aircraft. To ensure this when buying the MIP panels from 3rd parties, the MIP overall size should be:

The basic panel size being: 1515mm x 350mm

You will notice that there is an extra 68mm at the bottom. This is slightly different from the real
aircraft. This extra created space, at the bottom, allows the monitors to fit flush in the units while not
extending too high up the panel. This prevents the monitors from interfering with other panels, as
stated in the difference section above. This also allows a host of different size monitors to be fitted.

ESSENTIAL ROUTER BITS

To get that neat even finish, I highly recommend the following router bit. Although not essential, as most of the
rounded corners could be achieved in a variety of different ways.

12mm Radius Straight Template Cutter with Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect cut-outs in any part, by placing

the bearing along a straight edge. Cost: £5 approx.

PREPARE THE PARTS

Using the plans provided, Prepare and cut all the parts. The
structural supports are created from 18mm x 66mm stock.
Creating individual MIP panels can be achieved by hand but
would be very time-consuming. The plans and dimensions are
included if you decide to take the route. However, downloading
the MIP design might be a better option if you have a CNC or
Laser. The parts can then be selected and created very quickly
from the CAD Designs.

TOOL SAFETY

SAFETY
Please be careful with power tools. This guide does not teach you how to use or operate the tools safely. It’s very easy for accidents to
happen. Always get advice and follow the instructions with the tool. I accept no responsibility if you get injured while creating something
from this guide.

MDF SAFETY

Always where a mask, that can protect you from the dust created by MDF. Try to use dust extraction where possible too.

CREATING THE MIP BOX STRUCTURE

STEP 1 (Building the MIP Box Structure)

• Screw items 2 & 3 to Item 1 (50mm/2” woodscrews)
• Pre-drill and countersink screws holes for a flush
finish
• (Do not glue, this will allow disassembly if you find
anything needs tweaking/adjusting)
When creating the MIP box structure, you will notice various cut-
outs in the frame. Some of these are not necessary. It will depend
on the panel layouts you purchase or create. By changing from
nuts and bolts to screws for affixing the panels, you could
eliminate most of the cut outs. Picture 3 shows the cut-outs for
the nut & Bolt.
The two arrows marked in the picture to the left (The Top MIP
support -Item 1), are the two cut-outs I recommend.
The upper hole is to allow cables to pass through the various
sections created using a hole saw.
The lower cut-out allows for the rudder gauge to fit correctly and
can be created using a jigsaw.

STEP 2 (Building the MIP Box Structure)

Screw item 4 to items 2 & 3
(Do not glue, this will allow disassembly if you find anything
needs tweaking/adjusting)
Make sure the box structure is now as square as possible; this can
be achieved in the next step.

VERSION 1.0 6
[Link]

STEP 3 (Building the MIP Box Structure)

• Screw item 8 to the box assembly
• For the time being, use a few screws to temporarily
hold the parts, as this will be removed for access.
Note: Do not glue at all! This will allow for easy access to the MIP
internals
This part of the box unit should be easily removeable. You’re
When attaching the 12v LED strips, probably going to need a lot of access during your build. The hole

that comes on the lights. I found; This panel will be covered in 12v LED strips for back lighting.
they quickly fall off. I now secure Warm white is closest to the real aircraft, but others do use
them with Hot Glue bright/cool white. The cut-outs at the bottom allow for various
wires to pass into the unit. Creating the cut-outs to the edge
means you can easily remove the panel without snagging any
cables.
To help square up the unit, try using the two edges of a new sheet
of wood. They are usually square, place the box structure on top
and align two sides, mark around the box, and cut out. This should
make a good square unit.

STEP 4 (Building the MIP Box Structure)

• Screw the baseplate to the box structure
• These screws must be countersunk and fitted flush to
the surface
Note:
This part of the build depends on your panels. I would highly suggest you
lay out all your panels and ensure the cut-outs match where your panels
fit.
If you purchase your panels
and they come with a
backboard, that’s even
easier. You may have to fill
the gap at the bottom with
a filler piece.

VERSION 1.0 7
[Link]

STEP 5 (Building the MIP Box Structure)

• Remove the back LED board
• Screw the dome fascia from the inside to secure the
piece onto the panel.
Once again, these screws need to be flush or below the surface to
ensure they do not damage your monitors.

The maintenance stand is optional and a great aid for the build process ahead. It
prevents your panels/paintwork from getting damaged as you progress in your
build.
The stand can be created from scrap wood.
It supports the MIP and allows the MIP to be held at any angle. It does not need
to be exact or accurate, but do make sure it's strong enough to take the weight of
the components.

CREATING THE MIP Maintenance Stand

STEP 1 (Building the MIP Maint Stand)

• Create the MIP Maintenance stand from scrap wood if
possible.
• Use the MIP stand plans to cut the parts to size.
If you have the time, this is highly recommended. The unit allows
the MIP to be flipped over and over to make it easy to work on the
front or rear and hopefully prevent any stress positions for the
builder.
You can adjust the position/angle with additional screws next to
the pivot points to make the unit balance better as you go along.

VERSION 2 1
[Link]

STEP 2 (Building the MIP Maint

Stand)
• Attach the upright item to bottom brace with
screws.
• Repeat on the other side.
Ensure the parts are at right angles to each other, and
the upright does not protrude lower than the bottom
brace.

STEP 3 (Building the MIP Maint

Stand)
• Attach the support with screws
• Repeat for the other side
Ensure the support is on the centre line of the upright to
allow the other side support to fit correctly.

STEP 4 (Building the MIP Maint

Stand)
• Attach the other support with screws
• Repeat for the other side

VERSION 2 2
[Link]

STEP 5 (Building the MIP Maint

Stand)
• Attach the centre support with screws to the
uprights
• Repeat for the other side
Make sure the support is low enough that the MIP will
not interfere. If there is a gap between the MIP and
stand, fit a washer/s to fill the gap.

STEP 6 (Building the MIP Maint

Stand)
• Insert the MIP Box, find the balance point,
and place a screw into the pivot point.
• A second screw can be added to hold the
MIP in a set position.
This should now bring the MIP up to a comfortable work
height, and allow you to fit all the parts with ease.

Tools used: INTRODUCTION

Jigsaw

Drill/Screwdriver

The MIP face panels make the unit look like the real aircraft. The first sim
I created all my own panels, using my own CNC machine. This was an
immense feeling of satisfaction, knowing I could build any panel I wanted. I
went through several revisions and, of course, lots of errors! I have also
Router found that having a 3D printer really helps in creating parts.

DIY Build or Buy?

Looking back, if you add the cost of the CNC, router bits, the price of the
Perspex sheets, paint, and time. Sometimes it’s easier just to purchase
Pre-made kits. One drawback I have found of buying Pre-made panels is,
you have to do it their way, or you might find things that need adjustment
Orbital Sander or tweaking.

One site I highly recommend is:

Compound Mitre
Saw

Whichever way you chose, compare prices, and see which works for you.
Please bear in mind, you would also need to buy all the electrical
components to create working panels, which will add a further £100 to the
price. Below are all the details to create your own MIP.

VERSION 2.0 1
[Link]

INTRODUCTION

My MIP screens (Qty 3) Lower Eicas (Qty1) and FMC monitors (Qty2) are running from an old
desktop PC (Intel i7, 4GB ram, and a Geforce 760 & Geforce 960) networked to my main computer
via an ethernet switch.
The monitors used in my MIP are the following:
• FO & CPT PFD/ND: 18.5” 1366x768 (Pixels 16:9 ratio - Qty 2)
• Upper EICAS: 14.1” 1024x768 Pixels (4:3 ratio - Qty 1)
• Lower EICAS: 12” 1024x768 Pixels (4:3 ratio - Qty 1 - Located in the FMC Console)
NOTE:

Removing the plastic case helps reduce edge clearances and allows for a slimmer fit. Be careful, this
might expose high voltage contacts, and the chance of electrocution increases with the surrounding casing
removed.

VERSION 2 1

• Move it around to fit the best fit position

STEP 2 (Fitting the MIP monitors)

• Fit the LH screen bottom brace
• Trap the monitor between MIP backplate and

Tools used: INTRODUCTION

Drill/Screwdriver
The Boeing 737 Knee panels are a fun project to build, especially if you have a
3d printer. They are simple to construct, both mechanically and electrically. These
panels are backlit with 12v LED strip lights behind each section. The air vent,
depending on which version you decide to print, can be made fully operational.
If you do not have a 3d printer, you can find the relevant files on Thingiverse or at
[Link] and select a 3rd party to print for you. The parts can also be
purchased online, but this really increases the price.
Hole saws

Router

PANELS
Orbital Sander I have included all the designs and plans to build your own panels. If you
purchased MIP panels from an online site such as [Link],
these knee panels should come with the package. These panels should then fit
into the Knee panels bases created later on in this section.

ESSENTIAL ROUTER BITS

Compound Mitre
To get that neat even round over on the bottom knee panel rail, I highly
Saw recommend the following router bit. Although not crucial, as most of the rounded
corners could be achieved with sanding.

12mm Radius Rounder Over Bit with Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect round over edges on any part.
Cost: $5 approx.

Tools used: INTRODUCTION

Jigsaw

Circular saw

The FMC (Flight Management Computer) Console houses the two FMC’s
Router and the lower EICAS monitor. It is constructed from 12mm MDF sheet and
30mm x 30mm square stock timber.
The plans do differ slightly from the real aircraft due to monitor size
selection and costings (see next page for detailed adjustment).

ESSENTIAL ROUTER BITS

Orbital Sander To get that neat even finish, I highly recommend the following router bits.
Although not crucial, as most of the procedures can have multiple methods
to complete the same action.

12mm Radius Rounder Over Bit with Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect round over edges on any part.
Compound Mitre Cost: $5 approx.
Saw

12mm Diameter/50mm Flute Straight/Template bit with

Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect straight lines or allows multiple

copies of parts to be created. Used to create exact copies of the
FMC panels. Cost: $5 approx.

VERSION 2 1

Difference: The FMC Bay

The Real Aircraft Design The Extended Design

This Design change was also carried out to allow

various size monitors to fit in the console easily.
If you stick with the orginal aircraft design, you
will require a specialised monitor size, which is
small and expensive. However, this design
change means your pedestal and throttle unit
will be 4cm further aft than the real aircraft.

VERSION 2 2

The Plans:
The best way I found to produce these plans are as follows:

• Take your time.

• Measure the dimensions from a master corner. Measure each point
across and along, like a coordinate system. This way, every point angle will
be in the exact position. There is too much error in measuring a distance,
then an angle, and measuring another distance. Use the angles given just
for confirmatory checking. Most cuts are at 90 Degrees, but there are a few
that have angled cuts. Make sure you check if they require the saw to be
angled before cutting.

Creating the 737 FMC Console

STEP 1 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Create and cut all the parts from the
plans/drawings
• 12mm MDF was used for the panels
• 30mm x 30mm square stock was used for
the supports

STEP 2 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• The 2 centre panels have wiring loom
cutouts (the dimensions for this part start
on page 9)
• Align the supports (20 & 23) the panel (23)
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue,
countersink the holes on the inboard face

STEP 3 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Place the aft support (18) in position at the
rear on the inboard side of panel (23).
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue

STEP 4 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Place the forward support in position (4) on
panel (23)
• The supports should be on the outside

STEP 5 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Create a mirror of steps 1-4, creating the
RH centre panel (3)
• Secure each support with #8 30mm wood
screws & glue.

VERSION 2 4
[Link]

STEP 6 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach the aft frame (14) to panel Assys (3)
& (23).
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue.

STEP 7 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach the fwd panel (16) to panels (3) &

(23)
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue.
• Apply a 12mm round over to the upper/top
edge.

STEP 8 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Create the LH outer panel (22) by attaching

supports (24) & (31)
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue.

STEP 9 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach support (27) to panel (22)

Note: it is set 12mm forward of the aft edge to

allow the aft panel to sit flush.

• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue

STEP 10 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Create the RH outer panel (9) as in steps 8

& 9 but as a mirror.
• Attach supports (6) (13) & (15)
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue

VERSION 2 5
[Link]

STEP 11 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach the outer panels (9) & (22) to the aft
panel Assy (14)
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue.

STEP 12 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach the two foots to the unit with screws

and glue.
• These are created from 18mm & 12mm
MDF sandwich glued together.
• Apply a 12mm round over to the upper
outer edge.

STEP 13 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach the LH & RH face panels (30) (32)

(26) & (29)
• Secure with #8 30mm wood screws & glue.
• Roundover the outer and upper edges
with a 12mm round over router bit.

STEP 14 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Place the lower EICAS screen cover on to

the unit

Note: it is created from 9mm MDF or thinner if

available.

• DO NOT GLUE OR SCREW AT THIS TIME!

STEP 15 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Fill all screw holes with wood filler

• Sand smooth, blend and sand all edges
smooth
• Paint white

VERSION 2 6
[Link]

STEP 16 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Fit the monitor into position in the FMC
console, in portrait rotation.
• The monitor should sit perfectly in the
created gap without the need to physically
attach it.
• Adjust the screen rotation in the windows
display settings.
• If the monitor has a control panel that
requires a user input panel, place it in a
position where access is available. My sim
control panel is available through the
access hole in the front of the unit.

STEP 17 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Place the two FMC units into position

• I have one open cocpkits v3 FMC & one
Hispa Panels DIY FMC (both of these fit
perfectly into the unit.
• Route any wiring through the FMC console

STEP 18 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Attach the screen cover (1) and screen

frame (19) over the monitor (2)
• The Eicas Frame should be placed upside
down (the widest part at the top and both
parts painted grey)

STEP 19 (Creating the 737 FMC Console)

• Insert the whole unit into the MIP Assy,

Slide it into position; it should fit perfectly
and contour precisely to the MIP structure
sitting flush.

VERSION 2 7

Tools used: INTRODUCTION

Jigsaw

Circular saw

This is probably one of the more difficult and time-consuming builds of the sim.
However, seeing how well the final product looks. If you take the time to create
these, the personal reward is enormous. These units house the 6 pack warning
panels, Fire Warning, and Master caution units.

Router Note:

This part has been designed to protrude 5cm less into the cockpit than the real aircraft.
This was done to make all the windows, sidewalls, and MIP angles fit correctly. I have to
admit that I have never actually been in a 737 cockpit, and rely on my friends who do
work in the industry to provide all measurements, angles, and photos. But not being able
to see the real aircraft in person led to this slight mismatch.

Building the Glare-wings is fun, but very time-consuming. From my YouTube

videos, you can see the process of cutting each layer and then gluing them
Orbital Sander together. The final result is something very similar to the real thing when sanded,
but not exact, as these are very complex shapes. I have now seen people 3d
print them, create them by hand with a jigsaw, and finally by CNC machine as I
did. They all look fantastic!

I used a CNC to create the Glare-Wings.

Compound Mitre These files can be downloaded from the
Saw website and used directly to reproduce the
parts if you’re lucky enough to own a CNC

If you don’t want to self-build them, you can easily purchase plastic ones from the
internet for around 60 to 80 euros per side.

VERSION 2 1

Working with the Plans

The best way I found to produce these plans are as follows:

• Take your time.

• Measure the dimensions from a master corner. Measure each point across and along, like a
coordinate system. This way, every point angle will be in the exact position. There is too much error in
measuring a distance, then an angle, and then measuring another distance. Use the angles given just
for confirmatory checking. Most cuts are at 90 Degrees, but there are quite a few that have angled cuts.
Make sure you check if they require the saw to be angled before cutting.
• Only the Glare-Wings are an intricate design; the rest of the build is very straight forward. If the Glare-
wing plans look too challenging to understand, try downloading the CAD file to inspect and determine
the best options that suit you.
• If you are using a Jigsaw while building the Glare-Wings, I wouldn’t worry too much about the various
cutback angles of each part. The orbital sander can adjust the MDF very quickly to make the required
shape.

• If you are creating the Glare-Wings by hand, I wouldn’t bother cutting the lightening holes out on the
inside of the forms. After all, weight isn’t really a problem! We are not actually trying to create a flying
aircraft! They will be heavy, though!

Creating the 737 Glare-Wings

STEP 1 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• The plans provided are actual 1:1 scale:

o The parts can be cut out on paper and placed/glued onto the MDF
and used as templates to cut around with a jigsaw.
o Each side consists of 17 Body layers and 2 transition plates.

• The Fusion 360 design can be found at:

[Link] This can be used to inspect the
part or create a 3d printed part or use a CNC.

STEP 2 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Cut out all the parts of the Glare-Wings
following the plans provided.
• Note: Layer 13 is created from 12mm MDF;
all the other layers are 18mm MDF.
• Don’t worry too much about cutting the side
angles on each of the pieces. It will result in
a bit more sanding, but MDF sands quickly
with a 60 Grit sanding disc on an orbital
sander.

STEP 3 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Layer up the first 2 parts
• The first two layers (16) & (17) should be
glued together
• The outer upper edge requires an 8mm
round over

STEP 4 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Sand smooth and blend the parts together

VERSION 2 3
[Link]

STEP 5 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Layer up the next 2 parts
• The first two layers (14) & (15) should be
glued together

STEP 6 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Place the two created parts together (14 &
15, to 16 & 17)
• Glue & Screw these layers together
• Sand smooth all joints

STEP 7 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Place the 2 parts of the transition plates
together (18,19)
• Glue & Screw these layers together
• Note: These layers were made in four parts
due to the size of my CNC machine. The
parts are now full size and in two full
pieces.

STEP 7 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Glue and screw all the other layers together
in numerical layer order.
• A rough shape should now be visible on all
sides.

STEP 8 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Sand smooth on all sides.
• This may take a while. Start with 60 grit for
fast removal, working through the range
until 320 grit.

VERSION 2 4
[Link]

STEP 9 (Creating the 737 Glare-Wings)

• Fill any holes or defects with wood filler
• Prime the ASSY
• Paint the Assy.
• Create the RH side by mirroring the
plans/parts.
• Once painted, install the Glare-Wings onto
the MIP, attach them by screwing into the
units from behind the MIP backboard.

Jigsaw

Circular saw

Router This is where a lot of avionic magic happens in this build, and the sim really
comes to life with the use of the 6 pack warning panels, EFIS units, and MCP.
Note:

This part has been designed to protrude 5cm less into the cockpit than the real aircraft.
This was done to make all the windows, sidewalls, and MIP angles fit correctly. I have to
admit that I have never actually been in a 737 cockpit, and rely on my friends who do
work in the industry to provide all measurements, angles, and photos. But not being able
Orbital Sander to see the real aircraft in person led to this slight mismatch.

Building the Glare-wings is fun, but very time-consuming. I have now seen people
3d print them, Create them by hand with a jigsaw and with CNC machine. They
all look fantastic!
If you don’t want to self-build them, you can easily purchase plastic ones from the
internet for around 60 to 80 euros per side.
Compound Mitre
Saw The rest of the Glareshield build is straight forward and easily created!

VERSION 1.0 1

Working with the Plans

The best way I found to produce these plans are as follows:

• Take your time.

• Measure the dimensions from a master corner. Measure each point across and along, like a
coordinate system. This way, every point angle will be in the exact position. There is too much error in
measuring a distance, then an angle, and measuring another distance. Use the angles given just for
confirmatory checking. Most cuts are at 90 Degrees, but there are quite a few that have angled cuts.
Make sure you check if they require the saw to be angled before cutting.

Essential router bits

To get that neat even finish, I highly recommend the following router bits. Although not crucial, as most of the
procedures can have multiple methods to complete the same action.

4.5mm Radius Rounder Over Bit with Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect round over edges on any part. I
used it to create the round overs on the 9MM MDF. Cost: $5
approx.

Extra Parts Required

The glare shield requires floodlighting. I used the following parts:

Creating the 737 GlareSheild

STEP 1 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Create the lower glare shield panel
• Created using 9mm MDF
• The cut-out/slot at the rear allows for cable
management to the MIP for EFIS & MCP

STEP 2 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Round over the forward edge with a 4.5mm
round over

STEP 3 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Create the Centre and rear frames
• The cutouts in the frames are for wire
management only, and a hole saw can be
used instead.

STEP 4 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Insert the lower panel between the two
glare wings.
• Align the rounded front edge with the flat
face of the glare wing.

STEP 5 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Screw the panel into the MIP box Structure
top frame and rear support

VERSION 1.0 3
[Link]

STEP 6 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Attach the centre frame 84mm back from
the forward edge of the panel.
• Screw from the bottom into the frame.
Avoid the screws being too long and
protruding through the frame.
• Screw the frame to the glare wings
• Remember, predrill the screw holes when
screwing into MDF!

STEP 7 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Attach the rear frame, aligning the frame to
the back of the glare wings
• Screw to affix to the glare wings
• Remember, predrill the screw holes when
screwing into MDF!

a
STEP 8 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)
• Insert the MCP
• I used metal right angle brackets from a
DIY store to attach them securley to the
Glareshield base panel.

STEP 9 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Insert the 2 EFIS units
• Again, metal right angle brackets from a
DIY store were used to attach them
securely to the Glareshield base panel.

VERSION 1.0 4
[Link]

STEP 10 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Insert the filler
• Adjust to hide the gap and fit your needs.
• During my construction, this piece just sits
in place not being permanentley attached.

STEP 11 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Create the glare shield cover panels using
9mm MDF
• Remember these pieces have various
angled cuts
• Round over the forward edges so there is a
beautiful smooth half dome.
• The centre glare shield requires a cutout for
LED 12v strip lighing as shown below.
• I used a router to cut a 6mm deep recess
into the panel, 10mm back from the forward
edge.

STEP 12 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Screw the Glareshield covers to the frames
• Do not glue; access will be required for any
future maintenance.
• Align the forward edge of the glare shield
covers against the inside edge of the glare
wings.

STEP 13 (Creating the 737 Glaresheild)

• Attach 12v Strip lights under the lower glare
sheild panel, just forward of the transition
plates.
• This led strip cover which helps difuse the
light over the MIP

Jigsaw

Circular saw

Building the front windows completes the front section look and feel of the 737
cockpit. It also allows the rest of the cockpit to join up and be assembled around
the front section.
This part is a personal preference depending on your own needs and may not be
Router necessary, especially if you going to use 3 monitors as the display visuals. But if
you are going to build the overhead panels, creating the front windows will really
add to the experience.

Working with the Plans

The best way I found to produce these plans are as follows:

Orbital Sander • Take your time.

• The windows have lots of angles, always ensure before making any cut,
you check the angle of the circular saw blade matches that of the plans!

ESSENTIAL ROUTER BITS

To get that neat even finish, I highly recommend the following router bits. Although not essential, as most of
the procedure can have multiple methods to complete the same action.

12mm Radius Rounder Over Bit with Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect round over edges on any part.
Cost: $5 approx.

12mm Diameter/50mm Flute Straight/Template bit with

Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create perfect straight lines or allow multiple

copies of parts to be created. Used to cut out the windows. Cost:
$5 approx.

10mm Rebate Bit with Bearing Follower.

This allows you to create 10mm recess cuts at various depths. In

this build this is essential for creating the window recesses. Cost:
$5 approx.

Creating the 737 Front Windows

STEP 1 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Start with laying the plans down from the
rear of the window. Mark dimensions from
the master corner (upper LH corner – for
the LH window).
• Mark the lines out on the 18mm MDF.

STEP 2 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Note: There are no 90-degree cuts when
cutting the window outside edges.
• Set the circular saw angle, then measure
the distance from the blade to the edge of
the saw.
• Place a straight edge (that the saw can run
For video help in building along as a guide), the same distance you
the front windows, watch measured from the mark outline. Run the
episode 13 on my: saw along the straight edge.
YouTube Channel. • This should, produce good straight angled
cuts.

STEP 3 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• I used a straight edge guided router bit to
cut-out the window panes. Placing straight
edge pieces of wood screwed along the
mark outlines for the router bit to guide
against.
• A jigsaw will do the job also!

STEP 4 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Using a 10mm rebate router bit, run it along
the window cut-outs at a depth of 5mm (or
the depth of the window glass you
purchase.
• This will allow the glass panes to sit flush.

VERSION 1.0 3
[Link]

STEP 5 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Repeat the previous steps for the RH side
window, completing it as a mirror of the LH
side.

STEP 6 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• The centre window support is created from
two pieces of hardwood. This allows the
angles to be easily created on a table saw.
• The two parts are then glued together.
• To hide the grain of the hardwood, I added
a 3mm MDF panel to the inside face.
• The inboard edges are then rounded over
with a 12mm round over bit.
• If you need wiring to the overhead panels,
cut out the centre part of the post to make a
channel.

STEP 7 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Create the upper support Assy.
• Once again, use a straight edge and set
the correct angles on the circular saw.

STEP 8 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Create the lower support assy.
• Set the correct angles on the circular saw.

STEP 9 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Attach the upper support.
• Ensure the screws go through straight into
the panel.
• Pre-drill if using MDF.
• This part will need to be removed later if
you’re building the overhead structure!

VERSION 1.0 4
[Link]

STEP 10 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Attach the centre posts.
• Ensure the screws do not penetrate
through the centre post.

STEP 11 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Attach the lower support.
• Pre-drill if using MDF.
• Ensure the screws enter at the correct
angle.

STEP 12 (Creating the 737 Front Windows)

• Place the newly created window
assemblies onto the front section.
• Affix the assemblies with screws.
• Place the glass into the windows.
