The line graph illustrates the proportion of people located in cities between 1970 and 2020 in four Asian
countries, namely the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, all Asian countries experienced an upward trend over the period. Additionally, Thailand had the
smallest proportion for most of the period, remaining relatively stable. Furthermore, the percentage of
the population living in Thailand was higher than that in Malaysia at some points; however, the positions
of the former and the latter are predicted to be reversed in the final year. In 1970, the percentage of the
population living in cities in the Philippines had the highest figure among the four Asian countries. There
was a slight increase in the rate of the urban population in Malaysia. However, the growth from 1990 to
2020 was dramatic, becoming the highest among the four countries, and it is predicted that this trend
will continue to rise from 2030 to 2040. With regard to the Philippines, there was a significant rise
between 1970 and 1990, but from 1990 to 2010 the figure decreased slightly. Later, it experienced
growth again and is expected to rise further during the period between 2030 and 2040. The third figure
in 1970 was Thailand with about 19%, after which it grew gradually until 1990. Then it remained almost
unchanged between 1990 and 2000, and eventually it increased again and is projected to continue
growing. The lowest figure was Indonesia at about 15%. The proportion then increased dramatically,
surpassing Thailand in 2010 and the Philippines in 2020. It is predicted that this upward trend will
continue, reaching approximately 60% in 2030 and about 64% in 2040.
