Tutorial 4

The document is a tutorial for Fluid Mechanics, specifically focusing on fluid flow calculations. It includes various problems related to volume flow rate, weight flow rate, mass flow rate, and pressure calculations in different fluid systems. The tutorial provides specific scenarios involving benzene, water, air, and oil, requiring students to apply fluid mechanics principles to solve for various parameters.

MP 215/ MP 211: FLUID MECHANICS
TUTORIAL No. 4: FLUID FLOW - 1
1. Benzene flows through a 100 mm diameter pipe at a mean velocity of 3 m/s. Find:
a) The volume flow rate in m3/s and L/min, b) The weight flow rate [kN/s] and c) The mass flow ate
[kg/s]
2. Assume the conduit shown in Fig. 1 has inside diameters of 0.3m and 0.5m at section 1 and 2
respectively. If water is flowing in the conduit at a velocity of 5.0m/s at section 2, find:
a) Velocity at section 1, b) Volume flow rate at section 1, c) Volume flow rate at section 2, d) Weight
flow rate, and e) Mass flow rate

3. Air at 30⁰C and 110 kPa flows at 16 N/s through a rectangular duct that measures 160 mm
by 320 mm. Compute,
a) The average velocity, b) The volumetric flow rate
4. In the chamber shown in Figure 2, section 1 has a diameter of 10 cm and the flow is 0.06
m2/s, section 2 has a diameter of 76 mm and the flow velocity is 10.97 m/s. Compute:
a) The average velocity at section 3, b) The volume flow rate at section 3
5. The water tank shown in Figure 3 is being filled
a) Through section 1 at V1 = 5 m/s and through section 3 at Q3 = 0.012 m3/s. if water level h
is constant determine exit velocity V2
b) If the water level varies in problem (a) above and V2 = 8 m/s, find the rate of change
dh/dt, assume d = 1.0 m.
c) For the general case of flow depicted in Fig.3, derive an expression for dh/dt in terms of
the tank size and the volume flows Q1, Q2 and Q3 at the three ports.

6. In Figure 4, water flows from A, where the diameter is 0.3 m to B where the diameter is
0.6 m at a rate of 0.4 m3/s. the pressure head at A is 6.8 m. Assuming no loss of energy
from A to B, find the pressure head at B.

7. Oil (s.g. 0.84) is flowing in a pipe under the conditions shown in Figure 5, if the total head
loss (hf) from point 1 to point 2 is 1.0 m. find the pressure at point 2.

2
8. A 50 mm diameter siphon is drawing oil (s.g = 0.82) from an oil reservoir, as shown in
Figure 6. If the head loss from point 1 to point 2 is 1.50 m, and from point 2 to point 3 is
2.40 m, Find the discharge of oil from the siphon and the oil pressure at point 2.

9. For the water shooting out of the pipe and nozzle shown in fig.7, find the height above the
nozzle to which the water jet will shoot. Assume negligible head loss.

3
10. Determine the velocity and pressure at section 2 and section 3, if water flows steadily
through the pipe system shown in fig.8. assume a head loss of 1.8m from section 1 to
section 2 and 4.6m from section 2 to section 3.
