1. What is Brexit?
Brexit is the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union. The UK officially left the EU on 31
January 2020.

2. The UK and the EU before Brexit


Before Brexit, the UK was a member of the EU. It benefited from the single market and free
movement of people and goods. However, it had to follow EU laws and pay money to the EU.

3. Why did the UK vote for Brexit?


Main reasons: sovereignty (make its own laws), immigration control, and money (keep UK money in
the UK).

4. The 2016 Referendum


On 23 June 2016, British people voted in a referendum. 51.9% voted Leave and 48.1% voted
Remain.

5. Positive consequences of Brexit


More sovereignty, control of borders, freedom to choose trade agreements, no need to follow EU
laws.

6. Negative consequences of Brexit


More border controls, more difficult trade with the EU, economic problems for some companies,
end of free movement.
