Jira definition
Issue
• An individual item in Jira
• Each time you create item, you’re creating a new issue with the unique key
to identify it.
• An issue can be any individual record in the database (like a request, a
problem, a task, a to-do item)
• A development team item (like a story, bug or epic)
Project
• A collection of Jira issues
• Think of Jira project as a container for all your team’s, tasks and to-do items.
Issue type
• Is a classification of issues in a Jira project.
• Epic
• Story
• Bug
• Investigation
• Task
Each Jira project has it’s own set of issues type based on the type of work
done.
Project
Each project Has a long name and a short name for example
(project/Development/DEV-1
You can use these names interchangeably. When searching for Jira issue.
Issue Key
• Each issue in a Jira project has a unique identifier or key.
• It’s made up of the project short name and a unique number.
• For example, the key is DEV-1
Tip!! Any time you’re discussing an issue in chat, email, or in a meeting, always
provide the issue key. This will eliminate confusion between similar issues.
Board
• Is a status-based view of issues for one or more projects.
• Is an easy way to see the status of many issues at the same time.
• Drag to the next block when you are done for example (start to progress)
Dashboard
• A statistics-based view of issues from one or more project
• You can create your own custom dashboard.
• The dashboard shows counts, trends and charts.
Query
• Is a question that you can ask Jira (example: how many bugs did the
developer report this week)
JQL (Jira Query Language)
• Is a language you used to ask
• It’s the way to search through thousands of issues. To find the few that you
are looking for.
Filter
• A saved query.
