Some people suggest that social networking and online communication have increased
social isolation. Do you agree?
It is suggested that the increasing popularity of digital interaction have resulted in rising social
isolation. From my perspective, I disagree with this view, as virtual communication offers
notable advantages in strengthening relationships and fostering community interaction.
The foremost benefit associated with online communication lies in its ability to maintain
connections. In today’s globalized world, where individuals increasingly relocate for
employment or education opportunities abroad, digital platforms become an effective bridge
that transcend geographical boundaries to help people sustain interpersonal bonds. Through
social media, they can maintain regular contact with one another, sharing updates and
experiences consistently without the necessity of physical interaction. For example, exchange
students residing in countries far from home can easily maintain regular contact and share
updates about their daily lives with their parents through platforms such as Facebook or Zalo,
helping them feel connected despite being separated by thousands of miles. This really
demonstrates how online communication keeps people close to each other irregardless of time
and space.
Another worth noting point is that quality online connections can serve as quality support
system. Many online platforms provide spaces for individuals to connect with others having the
same hobbies and interests through posts, groups, webinars, creating a safe space for them to
share experiences, seek support and receive emotional encouragement. This is ideal when
people do not want to expose their appearance, backgrounds but only focus on their in
common things. Such interactions act as a great way to promote same interest community
participation.
However, the excessive reliance on digital networks might lead to problems regarding isolation.
This happens when people replace meaningful offline interactions by overusing social media,
thereby diminishing the depth and quality of real-world relationships, leaving individuals to be
more vulnerable to the feeling of loneliness.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that controlled and strategic ultilization of online networking
will offer significant advantages in terms of sustaining bonds and people-to-people interaction.
Yet, over-reliance still poses threats to people’s mental health, requiring a balance approach
between online and face-to-face communication to preserve the quality of human’s
relationships.
