Tutorial 2

The document outlines a tutorial on symmetrical fault analysis in power systems, presenting three questions related to circuit response and fault current calculations. It includes specific parameters for a circuit with resistors, inductors, and generators, as well as scenarios involving three-phase faults. The tutorial aims to help students understand the impact of faults on system performance and the calculations required for fault analysis.

Power System Analysis (EET-020)

Tutorial -2 (Symmetrical Fault Analysis)

Ques.1 In following circuit R=0.125 ohm, L=10mH and source

voltage is given by v(t)=151sin(377t + α).
Determine the current response after closing the switch for
following cases:
a) No dc offset.
b) For maximum dc offset.

Ques.2 For a radial network three

phase fault occurs at F.
Determine the fault current
and the line voltage at 11kv
bus under fault condition.

Ques.3 A 25MVA,11kV generator with Xd''=20% is connected through a transformer line and
a transformer to a bus that supplies three identical motors as shown in figure. Each
motor has Xd''=25% and Xd'=30% on a base of 5MVA, 6.6kV. The three phase
rating of step up transformer is 25MVA,11/66kV with a leakage reactance of 10%
and that of step down transformer is 25MVA, 66/6.6kV with a leakage reactance
of 10%. The bus voltage at the motor is 6.6kV when three phase fault occurs at
point F. For the specified fault calculate:
a) Sub transient current in the fault
b) Sub transient current in breaker B.
c) The momentary current in breaker B.
d) The current to be interrupted by breaker B in 5 cycles.
Given: Reactance of transmission line is 50% on a Base of 25MVA, 66kV. Assume
that the system is operating on no load when the fault occurs. Choose a Base of
25MVA.
