DSP Notes

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) involves the analysis and manipulation of signals through digital computation techniques, converting signals into digital form for processing. Key components of a DSP system include ADC, digital processors, and DAC, with operations such as convolution, correlation, and filtering. DSP has numerous applications including speech and image processing, noise reduction, and mobile communication.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) – Short Notes

1. Definition

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is the analysis and manipulation of signals using digital
computation techniques.

Signals are converted into digital form and processed using algorithms.

Example: audio processing, image processing, communication systems.

2. Signal

A signal is a function that carries information about a phenomenon.

Examples

Speech signal

Temperature signal

ECG signal

Mathematically

3. Types of Signals

1. Analog Signal

Continuous in time and amplitude

Example: microphone output

2. Digital Signal

Discrete in time and amplitude

Represented by numbers (binary)

4. Basic DSP System

Input Signal → ADC → Digital Processor → DAC → Output

ADC (Analog to Digital Converter)

Converts analog signal to digital signal.

Digital Processor

Performs operations like filtering, compression, modulation.

DAC (Digital to Analog Converter)

Converts digital signal back to analog.

5. Basic DSP Operations

1. Convolution

Used to determine output of LTI systems.

2. Correlation

Measures similarity between signals.

3. Filtering

Removes unwanted frequencies.

6. Advantages of DSP

High accuracy

Noise reduction

Easy storage

Programmable systems

Stable systems

7. Applications of DSP

Speech processing

Image processing

Radar systems

Biomedical signal processing

Mobile communication

Audio and video compression

8. Example

Noise removal in audio:

Original signal + Noise → DSP Filter → Clean audio signal.

In simple words:
DSP means processing signals using computers or digital circuits to improve or analyze
them.
