IMO Model Course 1.14 – Medical First Aid
Aim
This model course aims to provide the training for candidates to provide medical first aid on board ships,
in accordance with Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code.
Objective
This syllabus covers the requirements of the 2010 STCW Convention with Manila Amendments,
Chapter VI, Section A-VI/4, Table AVI/4-1. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in
medical first aid, a trainee will be competent to apply immediate first aid in the event of accident
or illness on board.
Entry standards
For admission to the course seafarers should have completed IMO Model Course No. 1.13, Elementary
First Aid or attained a similar standard in elementary first aid.
Course certificate
On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued
certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/4-1 of STCW 1995.

Anatomy and physiology of the human (skeleton, muscles, 1 1
blood circulation, respiratory system, digestive system and
organs in the abdominal cavity, excretion, skin-building and its
function).
Toxicological hazards aboard, Medical first aid at accidents 2 1
arising in the carriage of dangerous cargo (classification of
dangerous substances according to the level of impact on the
human body, somatic, narcotic suffocating and irritating toxins
we encounter on board, evaluation of the toxicity of oil and
petroleum products, classifications of dust in connection with
the operation of the body).
Examination of Patient (A systematic and complete - 2
examination of the patient, palpitation technique and visual
inspection of the injured; collecting anamnestic data of the
patient / patient, analysis of these data and issuing health
advice).
Damage to the spinal column (spinal structure and function, 1 2
classification of spinal injuries and their symptoms, first aid,
transportation, care of the injured spinal cord injury).
Burns and scalds, first aid and treatment (burn concept, types 1 2
and degrees of burns and the application of "9" and "palm" in
determining the area of the burns, thermal and chemical burns,
features, first aid and medical treatment).
First aid for fractures, sprains, dislocation and damage to the 1 1
muscles (the algorithm of conduct reviewer for the injured, the
technique palpation and visual inspection of the injured sprains,
dislocations, fractures: signs, first aid, compression bandage,
immobilization with splints, primary care of wounds, abrasions
and scratches; injuries and their consequences; the
diagnos of internal organ damage from head injuries chest,
abdomen and lumbar, first aid).
Medical care of rescued persons including exposure to 1 2
hypothermia and damage due to cold (rules of resuscitation
and first aid for cardiac arrest and cessation of breathing, first
aid in case of hypothermia injuries due to cold, with different
types of drowning and suffocation; death at sea).
Medical products, equipment, devices, drugs and 1 1
recommendations for their use (bandages, medical devices,
instruments, equipment and accessories for care, the list of
products and recommendations for use on ships, rules and
methods of sterilization).
Radio medical advice (structure of the International Radio 1 1
Medical Centre (CIRM) free radio medical services, radio
services of CIRM center; the scheme of radio messages asking
for international medical assistance, the list of the main coastal
radio stations cooperate with the CIRM, standard notation in
the provision of emergency medical assistance, "medical
advice" and "assistance" (code 32, 38 and 39)).
Psychological / psychiatric problems (stress, emotions, 1 -
motivation, behavior, intelligence, emergency situation, the
content of thought disorders, sensory disturbances, stupor,
organic mental disorders, peculiarities, psychological
peculiarities of the seafarer, psychological peculiarities of
separation from family and society, relationships,
communication, relationship man-machine, approach to the
patient and measures).
