1. Victor purchased a bag of 21 assorted candies. There are 3 mint, 6 mixed berries, 5 sour
apples, and 7 cherry flavored candies in the bag.
a). If one candy is selected at random, what is the probability that the selected candy is
mint or mixed berry flavored?
b). If two candies are chosen in succession with replacement, what is the probability that
the selected candy is sour apple and cherry flavored, in that order?
2. Approximately 30% of the calls to an airline reservation phone line result in a reservation
being made.
a) Suppose that an operator handles 10 calls. What is the probability that none of the
10 calls results in a reservation?
b) What assumption did you make in order to calculate the probability in Part (a)?
c) What is the probability that at least one call results in a reservation being made?
3. Three friends (A, B, and C) will participate in a round-robin tournament in which each one
plays both of the others. Suppose that P(A beats B) =0.7, P(A beats C) =0.8, and P(B beats
C) =0.6 and that the outcomes of the three matches are independent of one another.
a) What is the probability that A wins both her matches and that B beats C?
b) What is the probability that A wins both her matches?
c) What is the probability that A loses both her matches?
4. The table below describes (approximately) the distribution of students by gender and
college at a midsize public university in the West. If we were to randomly select one student
from this university:
a) What is the probability that the selected student is a male?
b) What is the probability that the selected student is in the College of Agriculture?
c) What is the probability that the selected student is a male in the College of
Agriculture?
d) What is the probability that the selected student is a male who is not from the
College of Agriculture?
5. First graders at an elementary school were classified according to whether they were first
born or not, and also whether both parents worked outside the home. This resulted in the
accompanying table.
First Born Older Siblings
Both work outside home 17 40
At least one parent does not 8 25
work outside home
Suppose that one of these students is selected at random. Define events A, B, and C as
follows:
A = the event where the selected student is a first born
B = the event where the selected student's parents both work outside the home
C = the event where the selected student has older siblings
For each pair of events in the following table, indicate whether the two events are
disjoint and/or independent by putting a Y or N in the appropriate cells.
Y = Yes, N = No
Disjoint Independent
A, B
B, C
A, C
6. Thirty percent of all automobiles undergoing an emissions inspection at a certain inspection
station fail the inspection.
a) Among 15 randomly selected cars, what is the probability that at most 5 fail the
inspection?
b) Among 15 randomly selected cars, what is the probability that between 5 and 10
(inclusive) fail to pass inspection?
c) Among 25 randomly selected cars, what is the mean value of the number that pass
inspection, and what is the standard deviation of the number that pass inspection?
7. The probability of failing a web design course is 36%. Consider a class of 10 students
taking this course.
a). What is the probability of at least 3 students failing the course?
b). What is the probability that all of them will fail the course?
c). Among 10 randomly selected students, what is the mean value of the number that fail
the course, and what is the standard deviation of the number that fail the course?
