(The play starts again)
(Overhead view of the Robert)
Jack (Shouting): Make a ring!
(The hunters poked Robert)
Robert: Ow! Stoop it! You’re hurting!
Ralph: Kill him! Kill him!
(We can hear Roberts screams)
(The chanting begins)
Hunters: Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Bash him in!
(Black fade transition as the chanting fades away)
(Wide shot of all the hunters)
(Ralph sits up)
Chapter 8:
(Wide shot of the pale beach at dawn, the mountain dark in the distance)
(Back shot of Piggy and Ralph looking up at the mountain)
PIGGY: You’re sure? Proper sure?
RALPH: I told you. We saw it.
(close-up shot of Piggy, nervous)
PIGGY: You think we’re safe down here?
(Back shot of Piggy and Ralph)
RALPH: How am I supposed to know?
(wide shot of Jack kneeling in the sand, drawing circles with his finger)
(Piggy lowers his voice)
PIGGY: Really sure?
(Medium shot of Jack, not looking up)
JACK: Go up there yourself then. See what happens.
RALPH: It had teeth. Big black eyes.
(He shivers slightly)
(Close up shot of Piggy polishing his glasses)
PIGGY: So what are we going to do?
(Medium shot of Ralph)
(He pushes his hair back)
RALPH: We wouldn’t fight something that big. We’d say we would… but we
wouldn’t. Even Jack would hide.
JACK: What about my hunters?
(Ralph ignores Jack and looks toward the horizon)
RALPH: We’re brave while it’s light. But when it’s dark? That thing’s up there.
And now we can’t even keep a signal fire going.
(Medium shot of Jack)
JACK: What about my hunters?
(close-up of Ralph, firm)
RALPH: (scoffs and rolls his eyes): They’re boys with sticks, what can they
do?
Jack: Yeah right! We’re capable of hunting!
(A tracking shot of Jack standing up angrily, face red. Jack walks away stiffly)
(side shot of Piggy and Ralph)
(Piggy adjusts his glasses)
PIGGY: You didn’t have to say that.
RALPH: Oh, shut up.
(Jack blows the conch)
(The conch sounds badly, echoing across the beach)
(Wide shot of shelters stirring, littluns whining, hunters moving toward the
platform)
(Jack keeps blowing until everyone gathers)
(wide shot of the platform as the boys assemble)
(Jack grips the conch tightly)
JACK: I called this meeting.
RALPH: I would’ve called it anyway.
JACK: Well, I did.
RALPH: Fine. Talk.
(Ralph goes to sit down with the others)
(Back wide shot of the circle)
JACK: We’ve all seen it now. We were only a few feet away. It sat up. It looked
at us. I don’t know what it is — but it’s real.
(Wide shot of the circle)
(the boys murmur nervously)
BOY: It came from the sea—
ANOTHER BOY: From the dark—
JACK: Shut up! But It’s up there. And it hunts.
(he hesitates, remembering the fear)
JACK: And we couldn’t kill it. And Ralph says my hunters are useless.
(Medium shot of Ralph)
RALPH: I didn’t say that!
(Wide shot of Jack)
JACK: He’s not a proper chief. He talks like Piggy. He’s scared.. unlike me!
He’s not even a hunter. He’s never brought us meat. All he does is give.. give
orders! All this talk-
RALPH: All this talk! Talk, talk! Who wanted it? Who even called this
meeting?!
(Jack turns to Ralph)
JACK: All right then… all right.
(Close up shot of the conch in Jack’s hand)
JACK: W-who thinks Ralph shouldn’t be chief?
(Wide shot of the other boys, frozen)
(A wide shot of everyone)
JACK: Hands up… whoever wants Ralph gone.
(The camera goes from left to right. The boys stay still, looking scared and a
bit embarrassed)
(close-up shot of Jack, exhaling sharply, voice shaking slightly)
JACK: All right then.
(Jack puts the conch down)
JACK: I’m not playing anymore. Not with you.
(wide shot of the boys, heads down, avoiding eye contact)
(tracking shot of Jack leaving the platform, moving toward the forest edge,
tears running)
(medium shot of Piggy, indignant, turning to Ralph)
PIGGY: I been talking, Ralph, and you just stood there like—
RALPH: He’ll come back… He’ll come back when the sun goes down..
(Wide shot of Jack disappearing into the forest)
PIGGY (O.S.): We can do without Jack Merridew. There’s others on this island.
But now… we really got a beast. Hard to believe it, but we’ll need to stay
close to the platform. Less need for him and his hunting. Now we can
actually decide what’s what.
(Close-up shot of Ralph, restless, frowning)
RALPH: There’s no help, Piggy… nothing to be done.
(Long shot of the circle of boys, silence heavy over them)
(Medium shot of Simon coming slowly, taking the conch from Piggy)
RALPH: Simon? What is it this time?
SIMON: (hesitant, a bit nervous) I thought… maybe there’s something to do.
Something we-
SIMON: I think… we ought to climb the mountain.
(Wide shot of everyone, shivering with dread)
(Close-up shot of Simon whispering to Piggy)
SIMON: What’s the good of climbing up to this beast… when Ralph and the
others couldn’t do anything?
PIGGY (lifting the conch, nodding in agreement): What else is there to do?
(A back shot of the circle)
PIGGY: I said we could all do without a certain person. Now we gotta decide
what can be done. And the most important thing? The smoke. You can’t have
smoke without fire.
(wide shot of the circle, some boys whispering, some nodding)
(Far-off the beach, medium shot of Jack with a small group of boys, looking
confident)
JACK: We’re hunting. I’m gonna be chief of this tribe alright?
(close-up of boys nodding in agreement)
JACK: And as for the beast… we’re not bothering with it.
(wide shot of the boys looking at the forest, excited and ready for action)
JACK: We’re gonna forget the beast.
(A wide shot of Jack and his hunters)
JACK: And another thing… we won’t be dreaming so much down here. This is
near the end of the island.
(The group nods)
(Side shot of the group)
JACK: Later, we might hit Castle Rock. But now, we get more of the biguns
away from the platform… kill a pig… and have a feast!
(close up shot of Jack, serious)
JACK: And about the beast… when we kill, we’ll leave some of it for him.
Maybe then he won’t bother us…!
(Tracking shot of Jack trotting into the forest, hunters following silently)
(Medium shot of hunters spreading out nervously among the trees)
(Close up of Jack, crouched, observing the forest floor)
JACK: (whispering) There… pig tracks. Fresh. Stay quiet.
(POV shot of a pig under the bushes)
(Close up of Jack’s hand, pointing toward the sow)
JACK: Now!
(medium shot of hunters throwing spears onto the camera. SOUND: pig
squealing and suffocating)
(A wide shot between the trees of the hunters stabbing the pig with their
spears)
(Close up of Jack, holding bloody hands up)
JACK: Look!
(Medium shot of Maurice, giggling, Jack rubbing pig blood on his cheeks)
(Close up shot of Robert and Maurice acting out pig’s movements)
(A wide shot of Jack and his hunters)
JACK: …we’ll leave part of the pig for…
JACK: Where’s that stick?
(Roger hands the stick)
(medium shot of Jack pushing the head onto the stick)
JACK: Stick one end in the ground… Jam it in that crack.
(Pull in shot of the head hanging, a little blood dribbling down the stick.
Buzzing flies over the spilled guts.)
JACK: This.. this head… it’s for the beast. A gift!
(A wide shot of all the boys cheering and running through the forest toward
the beach)
(A zooming shot of the pig head with flies)
(Close up shot Simon, small and brown, crouched and hidden among the
leaves, staring at the sow’s head on the stick)
SIMON (whispering to himself): I know… I know.
(Medium shot of Simon shuts his eyes; the head still lingers like an
afterimage. Its half-shut eyes seem cynical, judging.)
SIMON (thinking, voice trembling): A gift for the beast… will it come for it?
(Close up shot of Simon licking his dry lips, looking away, shielding his eyes
with his hand. The oppressive heat is palpable, clouds bulging over the
island.)
(wide shot of butterflies flee the clearing. Simon lowers his head, the forest
silent, pearly stillness everywhere. Flies buzz around the pile of guts,
crawling onto Simon’s sweat-streaked skin, tickling him.)
(Close up shot of the Lord of the Flies on the stick, flies swarming.)
LORD OF THE FLIES (demonic, cruel): You are a silly little boy… just an
ignorant, silly little boy.
(Close-up shot of Simon’s face, pale and tense, eyes fixed on the Lord of the
Flies suspended in the clearing.)
LORD OF THE FLIES (soft, cruel, whispering): Well then… you’d better run off
and play with the others. They think you’re batty. You don’t want Ralph to
think you’re batty, do you? You like Ralph a lot… and Piggy… and Jack?
(Close-up shot of Simon’s head tilted slightly up. Eyes wide, unblinking. The
pig’s head sways slightly on the stick, dripping blood.)
(Medium two shot of lord of the flies and Simon)
LORD OF THE FLIES: What are you doing out here all alone? Aren’t you afraid
of me?
(Simon trembles slightly, lips moving, barely audible.)
SIMON (whispering): Pig’s head… on a stick.
(Lord of the Flies chuckles - low, mocking, echoing slightly in the trees.)
(Camera zooming in on Lord of the flies)
LORD OF THE FLIES (laughing hysterically): Fancy thinking the Beast was
something you could hunt and kill! You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you…
close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no good. Why are things the way
they are!
(The laugh shivers through the forest, bouncing off the trees. Shadows
flicker.)
LORD OF THE FLIES: Come now… get back to the others and we’ll forget the
whole thing.
(Medium shot of Simon sways slightly, imitating the tilt of the pig’s head. His
body is tense, half-conscious.)
(Close up shot of lord of the flies)
LORD OF THE FLIES: This is ridiculous. You know perfectly well you’ll only
meet me down there - so don’t try to escape!
(Side shot of Simon. Silence except for distant buzzing flies. Simon blinks
slowly.)
LORD OF THE FLIES (sharper, threatening): I’m warning you. I’m going to get
angry. D’you see? You’re not wanted. Understand? We are going to have fun
on this island. Understand? We are going to have fun on this island!
(The camera zooms in on Simon’s eyes, wide and frozen in fear.)
LORD OF THE FLIES (menacing, almost shouting): So don’t try it on, my poor
misguided boy, or else -
(Close-up: Simon’s face as blackness swells around him. His vision narrows.)
(Wide shot of Lord of the flies and Simon)
LORD OF THE FLIES (deep, echoing): -or else… we shall do you! See? Jack…
Roger… Maurice… Robert… Bill… Piggy… Ralph… Do you. See?
(POV SHOT from Simon. His eyes blink slowly and the vision becomes blurry
and the screen becomes black)
Chapter 9
(The mountaintop. Wind roars. The dead parachutist’s body moves as the
parachute moves in the wind.)
(Simon climbs slowly, weak and sweating. He reaches the top and stares at
the moving figure.)
(The wind lifts the parachute again. The body bows forward slowly.)
Simon: (whispering) It’s only a man.
(Simon carefully untangles the parachute lines from the rocks.)
(The wind catches the parachute. The body lifts and drifts out toward the
sea.)
(Simon watches, then turns and begins climbing down.)
Simon: (whispering) I need to tell the others about this!
(The beach. Night. A large fire burns. A wide shot of the boys sitting around
it, eating roasted pig.)
Jack: Who’ll join my tribe?
(Boys cheer loudly.)
(Maurice and Roger grin beside him.)
(Across the beach, Ralph and Piggy sit apart in the shadows.)
Piggy: Are you going with them?
Ralph: We’ll go. Just to make sure nothing happens.
(A tracking shot, they walk toward the fire.)
(The feast. Thunder rumbles in the distance. Clouds gather overhead.)
Jack: You want meat?
(He throws them pieces of pig. They catch and eat.)
Jack: We’ll hunt. We’ll have rules. And we’ll be safe.
(Lightning flashes.)
(The jungle edge. Simon stumbles forward out of the darkness, shaking and
weak.)
Simon: It’s only a dead-
(A boy sees him in the lightning flash.)
Boy: The beast!
(The circle breaks and reforms around Simon.)
(The boys scream and rush forward.)
All: Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!
(Spears thrust. Hands claw. Bodies surge together.)
(Simon falls.)
(The storm explodes overhead. Lightning flashes across twisted faces.)
(The chanting slowly fades.)
(The boys step back.)
( A close up shot of Simon’s disemboweled body lies near the water,
clenching his organs. His guts spilled out from the lower abdomen.)
(The night sky clears.)
Chapter 10
(A medium shot of Ralph and Piggy sitting on the sand.)
(Sam and Eric stand a little distance away, looking pale and shaken.)
Ralph: That was murder.
Piggy: No, t-that was an accident. We..We were scared… right?
(Sam and Eric glance at each other.)
Sam: It was dark.
Eric: We couldn’t see.
Ralph: I was outside the circle.
(Piggy nods quickly.)
Piggy: Me too.
(Sam looks down at the sand.)
Sam: We were on the outside too.
Eric: Yea, on the outside.
(Silence. None of them look at each other.)
RALPH: (looking toward the forest) We’ve gotta be careful. Jack’s tribe is still
out there.
PIGGY: (adjusting glasses) Careful? Ralph, ‘careful’ won’t save us.
SAM: Let’s just stay together n’ Keep the fire alive.
ERIC: (nodding) Mhm Nobody can lay a finger on us if we stick close.
(Night. The beach camp. The small fire burns weakly. Ralph and Piggy sit
near it. Sam and Eric lie on the sand, half-asleep.)
(Loud thud footsteps from a distance in trees)
(Ralph looks behind, looking tense)
SAM: (whispering, shivering, scared) It’s them… Jack’s tribe.
(Jack’s tribe bursts from the trees. Chaos explodes. Boys scream.)
JACK: (shouting, crazily) Who wants to have some fun?! WHOOHO!
(Jack snatches piggy’s glasses)
(Piggy reaches frantically for his glasses.)
PIGGY: My specs! No!
PIGGY: I can’t see! I can’t see!
RALPH: Stop them! Grab the glasses!
(Ralph lunges toward the attackers, collides with Eric.)
RALPH: Watch out!
(Eric swings, accidentally hits Ralph square in the jaw. Ralph stumbles back.)
RALPH: OW!
SAM: Ralph, I got you!
(Sam swings at Eric, hitting him in the stomach. Eric yelps and spins around.)
ERIC: WHAT THE—?!
(Ralph, furious, kicks Eric in the stomach.)
RALPH: TAKE THAT!
ERIC: STOP!
RALPH AND SAM: WHAT WAIT? THAT-IT WAS YOU?
(Jack’s tribe laughs and grabs some firewood and Piggy’s glasses, retreating.)
(The boys with bruises look at Jack’s tribe, devastated)
RALPH: They’re gone… for now. I guess
(The next morning. Smoke rises from castle rocks. A wide shot of Ralph
looking at it blankly.)
RALPH: We need a plan. Jack’s growing stronger.
PIGGY: And dumber, apparently.
SAM: We can’t fight yet. We need more people.
ERIC: And more fire.
RALPH: Then we wait. Watch. Protect what we can.
(Piggy glances toward Castle Rock.)
PIGGY: Someday… we’ll have our revenge.
RALPH: Someday… but for now, we survive. And try not to kill each other
first.
(The four boys sit near the ashes of the old fire.)
Chapter 11:
(Medium shot of Ralph and Piggy)
RALPH: We have to get your glasses back… and the fire.
PIGGY: (clutching the conch) We can’t let Jack take everything. Without this…
there’s nothing left.
(Wide shot. They walk toward Castle Rock, tense and silent.)
RALPH: Stay together. Don’t let them surround us.
(The boys nod)
