Optical Instruments (JEE – Quick Overview) 🔬

Optical instruments are devices that use lenses or mirrors to form images of objects so that we
can see them more clearly, magnified, or at large distances. In JEE Physics, this chapter mainly
focuses on how lenses and mirrors are used to increase magnification or resolution.

1. Simple Microscope (Magnifying Glass) 🔍

Uses a single convex lens.

It helps view small objects in enlarged form.

Object is placed within the focal length of the lens.

Image formed is virtual, erect, and magnified.

Magnifying power:

(for relaxed eye)

(for final image at near point)

Where D = least distance of distinct vision (≈25 cm) and f = focal length.

---

2. Compound Microscope 🔬
Uses two convex lenses:

Objective lens (short focal length)

Eyepiece lens

Used to observe very tiny objects (cells, bacteria, etc.).

Objective forms a real, inverted, magnified image.

Eyepiece acts like a simple microscope and further magnifies it.

Magnifying power:

M = \left(\frac{L}{f_o}\right)\left(\frac{D}{f_e}\right)

Where

= focal length of objective

= focal length of eyepiece

= tube length

---

3. Astronomical Telescope 🔭
Used to observe distant objects like stars and planets.

Consists of:

Objective lens (large focal length)

Eyepiece lens (small focal length)

Objective forms a real inverted image of distant objects.

Eyepiece magnifies that image.

Magnifying power (normal adjustment):

M = \frac{f_o}{f_e}

Where

= focal length of objective

= focal length of eyepiece

---

4. Important Terms for JEE 📘

Magnifying Power: Ability of an instrument to enlarge the image.

Resolving Power: Ability to distinguish two close objects.

Least Distance of Distinct Vision (D): About 25 cm for a normal eye.

---

Magnifying power formulas

Ray diagrams of microscopes and telescopes

Lens combinations
