Implementing Dynamic Routing(RIP) Using IPv4
Aim:
To configure and verify Routing Information Protocol (RIP) for dynamic routing in a network that
includes subnetted IPv4 addressing using Cisco Packet Tracer
Description:
Dynamic routing is a method in which routers automatically exchange routing information with each
other to determine the best path for data transmission. Unlike static routing, dynamic routing does not require
manual configuration of routes. One of the commonly used dynamic routing protocols is Routing Information
Protocol (RIP).
RIP is a distance vector routing protocol that uses hop count as a metric to select the best path. The route with
the smallest number of hops is considered the optimal path. The maximum hop count allowed in RIP is 15, and a
hop count of 16 is considered unreachable. RIP periodically sends routing updates every 30 seconds to
neighboring routers.
RIP version 1 (RIPv1) supports classful routing, while RIP version 2 (RIPv2) supports classless routing,
subnetting, and VLSM. It is simple to configure and suitable for small networks but not ideal for large networks
due to its limited hop count and slower convergence.
Thus, RIP provides an easy and efficient method for dynamic routing in small-scale networks.
