Module 1

This learning module from Binalatongan Community College focuses on Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) as part of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology curriculum. It outlines the objectives, outcomes, and resources for understanding OOP, emphasizing the concepts of classes and objects, their differences, and the advantages of OOP over procedural programming. OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING

Java - What is OOP?

OOP stands for Object-Oriented Programming.

Procedural programming is about writing procedures or methods that perform

operations on the data, while object-oriented programming is about creating
objects that contain both data and methods.
Object-oriented programming has several advantages over procedural
programming:

 OOP is faster and easier to execute

 OOP provides a clear structure for the programs
 OOP helps to keep the Java code DRY "Don't Repeat Yourself", and makes
the code easier to maintain, modify and debug
 OOP makes it possible to create full reusable applications with less code
and shorter development time

Tip: The "Don't Repeat Yourself" (DRY) principle is about reducing the repetition
of code. You should extract out the codes that are common for the application,
and place them at a single place and reuse them instead of repeating it.

Java - What are Classes and Objects?

Classes and objects are the two main aspects of object-oriented programming.

Look at the following illustration to see the difference between class and
objects:
So, a class is a template for objects, and an object is an instance of a class.

When the individual objects are created, they inherit all the variables and
methods from the class.

What is Class and Object in Java OOPS? Learn with

Example

What is Class in Java?

Class are a blueprint or a set of instructions to build a specific type of object. It is a
basic concept of Object-Oriented Programming which revolve around the real-life
entities. Class in Java determines how an object will behave and what the object
will contain.
Syntax of Class in Java
class <class_name>{
field;
method;
}
What is Object in Java?
Object is an instance of a class. An object in OOPS is nothing but a self-contained component
which consists of methods and properties to make a particular type of data useful. For
example color name, table, bag, barking. When you send a message to an object, you are
asking the object to invoke or execute one of its methods as defined in the class.
From a programming point of view, an object in OOPS can include a data structure, a
variable, or a function. It has a memory location allocated. Java Objects are designed as class
hierarchies.

Object Syntax in Java

ClassName ReferenceVariable = new ClassName();

What is the Difference Between Object and Class in

Java?
A Class in object oriented programming is a blueprint or prototype that defines the variables
and the methods (functions) common to all Java Objects of a certain kind.

An object in OOPS is a specimen of a class. Software objects are often used to model real-
world objects you find in everyday life.
VI. Self-Assessment:
1. What do you understand about Object-Oriented Programming?
2. What is role of a class in Object-Oriented Programming?
3. What is role of an object in Object-Oriented Programming?
