CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Customer satisfaction has become one of the most important factors determining the
success of products
in the modern competitive marketplace. In today’s global economy, consumers are exposed
to a wide range
of product choices including internationally recognized branded products as well as locally
produced
alternatives. This variety has created intense competition among companies, making it
necessary for
businesses to understand consumer preferences and expectations.

Branded products are generally produced and marketed by large companies that have
established strong
brand identity through advertising, quality assurance, and consistent product performance.
Consumers
often associate branded products with reliability, superior quality, better packaging, and
prestige.
These companies invest heavily in marketing campaigns, research and development, and
product innovation
to maintain their brand reputation in the market.

On the other hand, local products are manufactured by small or regional businesses and are
usually
available at lower prices compared to branded goods. Local products are often preferred by
consumers
because they are affordable, easily available, and sometimes more culturally familiar. In
developing
economies, local products also contribute to economic growth by supporting small
businesses and
generating employment opportunities.

Recent global consumer trends show that purchasing behavior is changing rapidly due to
economic factors
such as inflation, rising living costs, and increased access to digital information. Many
consumers
today are becoming more price‑conscious and value‑oriented. According to global
consumer surveys,
more than half of consumers worldwide are willing to consider private‑label or local
products if they
offer similar quality at lower prices.

Another important factor influencing purchasing decisions is digital transformation. Online

shopping
platforms, product review websites, and social media marketing allow consumers to easily
compare
products before making purchasing decisions. Consumers can check ratings, read reviews,
and evaluate
product features online, which significantly influences their satisfaction and product choice.

Therefore, studying customer satisfaction towards branded versus local products is

important for
understanding modern consumer behavior. The results of such studies can help businesses
develop
effective marketing strategies, improve product quality, and provide better value to
consumers.

1.2 Background of the Study

The concept of branding has evolved significantly over the past few decades. In earlier
times,
consumers had limited choices and relied mainly on locally produced goods available in
nearby
markets. However, globalization and technological advancements have introduced a wide
variety
of branded products into the market.

Branded products have traditionally dominated many markets because of their strong
reputation,
consistent quality standards, and aggressive marketing strategies. Companies invest heavily
in
advertising and promotional activities to create brand awareness and build customer
loyalty.
Well‑known brands are often perceived as trustworthy and reliable.

However, economic changes and rising living costs have encouraged many consumers to
explore
more affordable alternatives. Local products and private‑label brands are gaining
popularity
because they offer lower prices while maintaining acceptable quality levels.

The development of organized retail and e‑commerce platforms has also increased the
availability
of both branded and local products. Consumers now have the ability to compare prices and
product
features easily before making purchasing decisions.

These changes in the market environment make it important to study how customers
evaluate
branded and local products and how satisfied they are with their choices.

• Globalization has increased the availability of branded products worldwide.

• Consumers have more choices between branded and local products.
• Economic conditions influence purchasing behavior.
• Local manufacturers are improving product quality and packaging.
• Digital platforms allow consumers to compare products easily.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

The increasing competition between branded and local products has created confusion
among consumers
when choosing products. Branded products are often perceived as high‑quality and reliable,
but they
are usually more expensive. Local products are generally more affordable, but some
consumers may
question their quality or durability.

Businesses need to understand what factors influence customer satisfaction and purchasing
decisions.
Consumers may consider price, quality, brand image, availability, and product reviews
when selecting
products. Without proper understanding of these factors, companies may struggle to meet
consumer
expectations and maintain customer loyalty.

Therefore, the main problem addressed in this study is to determine how consumers
perceive branded
and local products and which factors contribute to higher levels of customer satisfaction.

• Consumers face difficulty choosing between branded and local products.
