DISCUSSION
Meaning and Origin of Media

The word media comes from the Latin word medium, which means “between”
or “in the middle.” This definition suggests that media functions as a bridge between
people and information. It connects individuals to events, ideas, knowledge, and even
other people. In simple terms, media helps messages travel from one person or group
to another. The main purpose of media is to disseminate information and knowledge
to a wide audience.
In the Philippine context, media is not a new concept. Even before the arrival
of modern technology, Filipinos already practiced organized communication. During
the pre-colonial period, the Umalohokan served as the town crier who went around the
barangay announcing laws, community meetings, and important events. This early
form of information dissemination proves that communication has always been
essential in Filipino society. From oral announcements to digital platforms, media
continues to evolve while serving the same fundamental purpose – connecting people.
Traditional and Modern Forms of Media

Traditionally, media included newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and

cinema. These forms of media played a crucial role in shaping Filipino public life.
Newspapers informed citizens about political developments and social issues. Radio
became especially important during times of crisis, such as typhoons and natural
disasters, because it provided immediate updates. Television shaped family routines
and cultural values through teleseryes, variety shows, and news programs. Cinema
also influenced Filipino identity by portraying social realities, love stories, and historical
narratives.
In contemporary society, the internet has expanded the definition of media.
Social networking sites, blogs, podcasts, streaming platforms, and video-sharing
applications are now powerful channels of communication. News spreads instantly,
and information travels across regions within seconds. This technological
advancement has deeply influenced Filipino behavior, communication patterns, and
cultural trends.

Communication and Social Media in Filipino Society

Communication is the foundation of society. It connects different sectors,
institutions, and communities. With the rise of mass media, society sees its reflection
in news and entertainment programs. Issues such as elections, poverty, corruption,
celebrity culture, and social justice movements gain attention because of media
coverage.
The internet has made communication faster and more accessible. Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs), for example, maintain strong family connections through
video calls and messaging applications. Social media platforms allow Filipinos to share
opinions, express emotions, and participate in national discussions. Because of these
developments, media has become essential in conducting social, political, and
economic affairs effectively.
The Four Purposes of Media

1. To Inform
One primary purpose of media is to inform. Informative media provides factual
updates about events and issues. News programs report on elections, government
policies, economic changes, and natural disasters. During typhoons, Filipinos rely
heavily on television, radio, and online updates for safety information. Informative
media empowers citizens to make decisions and stay aware of national and global
developments.

2. To Describe
Media also describes ideas, concepts, and situations. Descriptive media
explains complex topics in ways that audiences can understand. Documentaries about
Philippine history, educational programs about inflation, or news features explaining
public health issues help deepen understanding. By describing events clearly, media
enhances public awareness and knowledge.

3. To Persuade
Persuasive media attempts to influence opinions, behaviors, or beliefs. Political
campaign advertisements, brand endorsements by celebrities, and influencer
promotions are examples of persuasive media in the Philippines. Social media
influencers significantly affect consumer choices and even political attitudes. Through
repetition and emotional appeal, persuasive media can shape public preferences and
decisions.

4. To Entertain
Entertainment is another major function of media. Filipinos enjoy teleseryes,
comedy shows, music videos, online games, and viral social media content.
Entertainment media shapes humor, language, fashion, and lifestyle. Hugot lines,
meme culture, and love team phenomena are examples of how entertainment
influences Filipino popular culture.
Mass Media and the Mass Audience

Mass media refers to technology designed to reach a large audience. It allows

communication with millions of people at the same time. Television broadcasts,
national newspapers, radio networks, and internet platforms are examples of mass
media. Because of its wide reach, mass media has the power to shape trends, values,
and collective thinking.
The concept of a mass audience is relatively new in human history. Before
modern media, communication was limited to small communities. Today, a single viral
post can reach millions of Filipinos within hours. This large-scale communication
brings regions closer in terms of ideas, attitudes, and behaviors.

Media and Public Opinion

Public opinion is largely formed and expressed through media. When media
highlights certain issues repeatedly, the public begins to perceive them as important.
Media coverage influences discussions, priorities, and even voting behavior.
According to Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann, mass media plays a strong role in
shaping social reality. She argued that media often presents dominant viewpoints in
society. When people feel that their opinions are unpopular, they may remain silent.
In the Philippine context, social media trends, televised debates, and news framing
influence how citizens interpret political and social issues.

The Global Village Concept

The idea of the Global Village was introduced by Marshall McLuhan in his book
Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. McLuhan observed that electronic
media removes physical distance, making the world feel smaller and more
interconnected—like a village. In a traditional village, people are closely connected
and aware of each other's activities. Similarly, modern media enables people across
the globe to know what is happening in real time.
In the Philippines, this concept is evident in the strong influence of global
culture. Filipinos consume Korean dramas, Western music, and international news
daily. At the same time, Filipino content creators share local culture globally through
digital platforms. The Philippines actively participates in this interconnected global
community.

Filipinos and Social Media

The Philippines is often recognized as one of the most active social media users
in the world. A large percentage of Filipinos maintain social media accounts, and most
access these platforms through mobile phones. Social media influences political
engagement, consumer behavior, youth identity, and social movements.
However, the widespread use of social media also presents challenges. Issues
such as misinformation, fake news, online bullying, and digital manipulation are
serious concerns. This highlights the importance of media literacy. Filipinos must learn
to evaluate sources, verify information, and use media responsibly. Being part of the
Global Village requires critical thinking and ethical participation.

CONCLUSION
Media has evolved from the Umalohokan of pre-colonial barangays to the digital
platforms of the 21st century. It informs, describes, persuades, and entertains. More
importantly, it shapes Filipino culture, public opinion, and national identity. As students
of Philippine Popular Culture, it is important to recognize that we are not only
consumers of media but also contributors to it. Responsible media use ensures that
communication strengthens society rather than divides it.
