6.3 Rotation

The document provides a lesson on rotations in geometry, detailing how to graph figures and their images after specific rotations about a point. It includes examples with triangles and polygons, illustrating the process of determining coordinates after rotations of 90°, 180°, and 270°. Additionally, it contains practice exercises for students to apply their understanding of these transformations.

Lesson 6-3

Reinforce Understanding
A rotation is a transformation in which a figure is rotated, or turned, about a fixed
point. That fixed point is called the center of rotation.

Triangle LMN has vertices L(-3, 0), M(1, 4), N(2, 0). Graph the figure and its
image after a clockwise rotation of 90° about vertex N. Then give the
coordinates of the vertices for L′M′N′.
Step 1 Graph the original triangle. y Lʹ

same distance as NL
. Label this point L′ as shown.
Step 3 Repeat Step 2 for point M. Since N is the L O N Nʹ x
point at which triangle LMN is rotated, N′ will be in
the same position as N.
So, the coordinates of the vertices of L′M′N′ are L′(2, 5), M′(6, 1), N′(2, 0).
Rectangle QRST has vertices Q(2, 6), R(2, 4), S(6, 4) and T(6, 6). Write the
coordinate notation for a counterclockwise rotation of 270° about the origin.
Then write the coordinates of polygon Q′R′S′T′ after the rotation.
The coordinate notation for a counterclockwise rotation of 270° is (x, y) → (y, −x).
So, the coordinates of QRST are Q′(6, −2), R′(4, −2), S′(4, −6) and T′(6, −6).

For exercises 1-2, graph each rotation and give the coordinates of the vertices
of the image.
