Animals Basic Notes

Animals are multicellular organisms that rely on other organisms for food and can move from place to place. They are classified into vertebrates, which have backbones, and invertebrates, which do not. Animals play a crucial role in ecosystems, providing food, aiding in farming, pollination, and serving as subjects for research and education.

Animals – Basic Biology Notes

Animals are living organisms that can move from place to place and depend on other organisms for
food. They are one of the main groups of living things studied in Biology.

Main Characteristics of Animals

1 They are multicellular (made of many cells).

2 They cannot produce their own food like plants.

3 Most animals can move from one place to another.

4 They respond to stimuli such as light, heat, and sound.

5 They grow, reproduce, and eventually die.

Classification of Animals

1. Vertebrates (Animals with backbone)

1 Fish – live in water and breathe with gills.

2 Amphibians – live both in water and on land (e.g., frogs).

3 Reptiles – cold■blooded animals with dry scales (e.g., snakes, lizards).

4 Birds – animals with feathers and wings.

5 Mammals – animals with hair or fur; females produce milk (e.g., humans, dogs).

2. Invertebrates (Animals without backbone)

1 Insects – ants, butterflies, mosquitoes.

2 Worms – earthworms, roundworms.

3 Mollusks – snails, octopus.

4 Crustaceans – crabs, shrimps.

Importance of Animals

1 Provide food such as meat, milk, eggs, and fish.

2 Help in farming activities (e.g., oxen used for ploughing).
3 Some animals help pollinate plants.
4 Animals are used for research and education.
5 They are part of the ecosystem and help maintain balance in nature.
