Abstract

Natural resources are the backbone of economic development and human survival. However,
overexploitation and unsustainable management practices have led to rapid degradation, posing threats
to global environmental stability. This paper reviews current NRM approaches, focusing on the need for
integrated and community-based solutions to balance ecological health with socio-economic
development.

1. Introduction

Natural resources are materials and components that occur naturally in the environment and are
essential for human survival and development. These include land, water, forests, minerals, wildlife, and
air. Natural Resources Management (NRM) refers to the sustainable use, conservation, and protection
of these resources to ensure that they remain available for present and future generations. Proper
management is necessary because many natural resources are being depleted due to population
growth, industrialization, and unsustainable human activities.

2. Objectives of Natural Resources Management

The main objectives of natural resources management include:

To ensure the sustainable use of natural resources

To protect the environment from degradation

To conserve biodiversity and ecosystems

To improve the quality of human life

To promote sustainable economic development

3. Types of Natural Resources

3.1 Renewable Resources

Renewable resources are resources that can naturally replenish themselves over time. If managed
properly, they can be used continuously.

Examples include:

Water

Forests

Soil
Solar energy

Wind energy

3.2 Non-Renewable Resources

Non-renewable resources are resources that cannot be replaced within a short period of time. Once
they are used up, they may take millions of years to form again.

Examples include:

Minerals

Coal

Oil

Natural gas

4. Importance of Natural Resources

Natural resources are very important for human life and economic development. Their importance
includes:

Providing food, water, and shelter

Supporting agriculture and industry

Maintaining ecological balance

Providing raw materials for manufacturing

Supporting biodiversity and wildlife habitats

5. Major Environmental Problems Affecting Natural Resources

5.1 Deforestation

Deforestation is the cutting down of trees for agriculture, construction, and fuel. It leads to loss of
biodiversity and soil erosion.

5.2 Soil Erosion

Soil erosion occurs when the top fertile layer of soil is removed by water or wind. This reduces
agricultural productivity.

5.3 Water Pollution

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances contaminate rivers, lakes, and groundwater. This
affects human health and aquatic life.

5.4 Climate Change

Climate change is caused by increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It leads to global warming,
droughts, and floods.

5.5 Overexploitation of Resources

Excessive use of natural resources without proper management can lead to resource depletion.

6. Strategies for Natural Resources Management

6.1 Sustainable Use of Resources

Resources should be used in a way that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs.

6.2 Afforestation and Reforestation

Planting trees helps restore forests, improve air quality, and reduce soil erosion.

6.3 Soil and Water Conservation

Techniques such as terracing, contour farming, and irrigation management help protect soil and water
resources.

6.4 Environmental Education

Educating people about the importance of environmental conservation encourages responsible use of
resources.

6.5 Community Participation

Local communities should be involved in the management and conservation of natural resources.

7. Natural Resources Management in Ethiopia

Ethiopia has rich natural resources including fertile land, forests, rivers, and wildlife. However, the
country faces challenges such as deforestation, land degradation, soil erosion, and water scarcity. The
government and local communities are implementing various programs such as watershed
management, reforestation campaigns, and sustainable agriculture practices to protect natural
resources.

8. Conclusion
Natural resources are vital for human survival and economic development. However, many of these
resources are being depleted due to unsustainable use. Effective natural resources management is
necessary to ensure environmental sustainability and improve the quality of life for present and future
generations. Governments, communities, and individuals must work together to conserve and manage
natural resources responsibly.
