Mensuration – Complete Study Notes

Mensuration is a branch of geometry that deals with measurement of geometric figures and solids.
It focuses on quantities such as perimeter, area, surface area, and volume. These concepts are
widely used in mathematics, engineering, architecture, and everyday measurements.

2D Plane Figures
Shape Key Formulas
Square Perimeter = 4a, Area = a², Diagonal = a√2
Rectangle Perimeter = 2(l+b), Area = l×b, Diagonal = √(l²+b²)
Triangle Area = 1/2 × base × height
Heron's Formula Area = √(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)), s=(a+b+c)/2
Parallelogram Area = base × height, Perimeter = 2(a+b)
Rhombus Area = 1/2 d1 d2, Perimeter = 4a
Trapezium Area = 1/2 × h(a+b)
Circle Circumference = 2πr, Area = πr²
3D Solids – Surface Area and Volume
Solid Volume Surface Area
Cube a³ 6a²
Cuboid l×b×h 2(lb+bh+lh)
Cylinder πr²h 2πr(h+r)
Cone (1/3)πr²h πr(l+r)
Sphere (4/3)πr³ 4πr²
Hemisphere (2/3)πr³ 3πr²
Frustum of a Cone
A frustum is obtained when the top portion of a cone is cut off by a plane parallel to its base.
Important formulas: Volume = 1/3 πh (R² + r² + Rr) Curved Surface Area = π (R + r) l Where R =
larger radius, r = smaller radius, h = vertical height, l = slant height.
