Lesson DEFINITIONS AND FUNDAMENTAL
1 RELATIONS
Monday

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
1. identify parts of a circle: radius, diameter, chord, arc, secant and
tangent; and
2. identify central angle and its intercepted arc.

What’s New
The triangle and the circle are the two basic figures of Plane Geometry.
In this section, you will define the terms related to circle. Central angle
and its intercepted arc will also be discussed.

What Is It
Many objects that you come across everyday are ‘round’ in shape such
as a coin, bangles, bottle caps, the Earth, wheels etc. In layman terms,
the round shape is often referred to as a circle.

Here are the different terms related to circle and its definition.

Circle – is the set of all points in a

plane that are the same distance from
the center. The symbol for circle is ⊙.

Thus, ⊙ 𝐴 (𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑 𝑎𝑠 𝑐𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑙𝑒𝐴) stands

for the circle whose center is A.

Radius – is a segment joining the center of a

circle to a point on the circle. From the figure
at the left, 𝑀𝑁 ̅̅̅̅̅, and 𝑀𝑃
̅̅̅̅̅, 𝑀𝑂 ̅̅̅̅̅ are radii (plural
of radius). From the definition of a circle, it
follows that the radii of a circle are congruent.
Thus, 𝑀𝑁 ̅̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝑀𝑃
̅̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝑀𝑂 ̅̅̅̅̅.

𝑀𝑁, ̅̅̅̅
Note: ̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅ (read as line segment
𝑀0, and 𝑀𝑃
MN, line segment MO and line segment MP)

3
Chord – is a segment joining any two points on a circle.
̅̅̅̅ is a chord.
In the figure at the left, 𝐴𝐵

Diameter – is a chord through the center of the circle, it is

̅̅̅̅ is
the longest chord and is twice the length of a radius. 𝐴𝐵
a diameter of ⊙ 𝑂. Thus, we can say that:
1
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐴𝐵
2𝑂𝐴 ̅̅̅̅ or 𝐴𝐵
̅̅̅̅ ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑂𝐴 + ̅̅̅̅
𝑂𝐵 or ̅̅̅̅
𝑂𝐵 ≅ 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅
2

Diameters of the same or congruent circles are congruent.

̅̅̅̅ is also a diameter, then we can say that 𝐴𝐵
𝐶𝐷 ̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐶𝐷
̅̅̅̅ .

Secant of a circle is a line that intersects the circle at two

points.
⃡𝑄𝑅 is a secant line of ⊙ 𝑃 , and ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑄𝑅 is a chord of circle P.

Note: ↔ 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑏𝑜𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑒 and − 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑏𝑜𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑔𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡.

Tangent of a circle is a line that touches the circle at only

one point.
⃡𝑃𝑇 is a tangent line of ⊙ 𝑂 .

Arc – is a continuous part of the circumference of a circle.

Arcs are named by their endpoints.
̂ (read as arc AB)
𝐴𝐵

B In the figure at the left, ∠𝐴𝑂𝐶 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆,

̂ is an intercepted arc.
and 𝐴𝐶

̂
∠𝐵𝑂𝐶 is also a central angle with its intercepted arc 𝐵𝐴𝐶

4
Circle graph are often used to compare parts of
a whole.

The circle graph at the left is the result of a

survey of household expenditure of a family on
different items.

Each part is defined by an angle whose vertex is

the center of the circle. Such an angle is called a
central angle.

Definition:
A central angle of a given circle is an angle whose vertex is the center of
the circle.
Central angle is an angle formed by two radii.

Definition:
An angle intercepts an arc if and only if
1. the endpoints of the arc lie on the angle,
2. each side of the angle contains the endpoint of the arc, and
3. except for the endpoints, the arc lies on the interior of the angle.

Lesson MEASUREMENT OF CENTRAL ANGLE

2 AND ARCS IN A CIRCLE
Tuesday

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• identify minor arc, major arc, and semicircle;
• determine the measures of minor arc, major arc, and semicircle; and
• find the measure of a central angle given its intercepted arc;

What’s In
Parts of a circle. Identify the following:
1. chord 5. secant
2. radius 6. tangent
3. diameter 7. center
4. arc 8. central angle

What’s New
Can you name the different arcs in the circle?
What are the measures of these arcs?

The next lesson is about arcs of

a circle and its measurement.

6
What Is It
Arcs of a Circle
The three types of arcs are shown below with the degree measure
definition of each type.

Minor arc – is an arc that is less than a

semicircle. It is named usually by using the
two endpoints of the arc.
̂ 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑐.
𝐵𝐶

Major arc – is an arc of a circle that measures greater

than a semicircle. It is named by using the two
endpoints and another point on the arc.
̂ 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑚𝑎𝑗𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑐.
𝐵𝐷𝐶

Semicircle – is an arc measuring one-half the

circumference of a circle.
Three letters are needed to name a semicircle.
̂ 𝑜𝑟 𝐵𝐶𝐴
𝐴𝐶𝐵 ̂ 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑠𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑟𝑐𝑙𝑒.

Notice that three letters are used to name the major arc and
semicircle. Three letters help us trace the points in the arc. In this
way, there is no confusion as to which arc is to be named.

̂ means begin at H and end at G.

𝐻𝐺
̂ means begin at H, go through G and
𝐻𝐺𝐽
end at J.

Degree Measure of an Arc

1. The degree measure of a minor arc is the measure of the central

angle which intercepts the arc.
∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒, and
̂ is its intercepted arc.
𝐴𝐵

̂
m ∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 = 𝑚𝐴𝐵
̂
∴ ∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 ≅ 𝐴𝐵

7
2. A full circle is 360𝑜
There are 360 degrees in one
full rotation (one complete circle)

3. The degree measure of a major arc

is equal to 360𝑜 minus the
measure of its related minor arc.

minor arc: ̂ = 74𝑜

𝑚 𝐵𝐶
major arc: ̂
𝐵𝐷𝐶
̂ = 3600 - 𝑚 𝐵𝐶
m𝐵𝐷𝐶 ̂
= 360 - 74

= 286𝑜

4. The degree of a semicircle is 180𝑜

̂ is a semicircle.
𝐸𝐻𝐺
̂ = 180𝑜

Arc Addition Postulate

The measure of an arc formed by two adjacent arcs is the sum of the
measures of the two arcs.

Adjacent arcs are arcs with exactly one

point in common.
̂ are adjacent arcs.

Sum of Central Angles

The sum of the measure of the central angles
of a circle with no common interior points
is 360 degrees.

In the figure at the right,

m ∠𝐹𝐴𝐵+ m ∠𝐵𝐴𝐶+ m ∠𝐶𝐴𝐷+ m ∠𝐷𝐴𝐸+ m ∠𝐸𝐴𝐹 = 3600

What is the value of x?
What is the distance of the
chord from the diameter?

̂ is equal to the measure of the central angle.

𝑚𝐴𝐵

̂?
How about the length of 𝐴𝐵
̂?
What is the length of 𝐴𝐵

This lesson talks about finding the length of an

arc of a circle.

What is It
Arc Length

The length of any arc is subtended by an angle by first recalling how to

find the circumference of a circle, the distance around the outside of
the circle.

The circumference, 𝐶, of a circle of radius 𝑟 is given by 𝐶=2𝜋𝑟.

The length of the minor arc above can be calculated by multiplying the
1
circumference, 2𝜋𝑟, by 4.

𝜃
In general, for an arc with central angle 𝜃, this is a section of the
360
circumference and its length is calculated as

𝜃 2πr𝜃 πr𝜃
Arc length (𝑙) = 2𝜋𝑟 ( 360) = =
360 180

Definition: Arc Length

The length of an arc that subtends an angle 𝜃, measured in degrees, in a circle of
πr𝜃
radius 𝑟 is given by Arc length (𝑙) = 180

14
Examples:

A. Find the length of 360 arc in a circle whose circumference is 45𝜋.

Solution: 𝜃= 360 and C = 2𝜋𝑟 = 45𝜋

𝜃 36 9
𝑙= 360
2𝜋𝑟 = 360 45𝜋 = 2 𝜋

B. Find the radius of a circle if a 400 arc has a length of 4𝜋.

Solution: 𝑙 = 4𝜋 and 𝜃 = 400

πr𝜃
𝑙 = 180

πr(40)
4𝜋 = 180

4𝜋 (180)
4𝜋 (180) = πr(40) 40𝜋
=r r = 18
