SHORT ANSWER
1. Describe a situation in which storing just one value at a time in memory does not meet your needs.
ANS:
At times you might encounter situations in which storing just one value at a time in memory does not
meet your needs. For example, a sales manager who supervises 20 employees might want to determine
whether each employee has produced sales above or below the average amount. When you enter the
first employee’s sales value into an application, you can’t determine whether it is above or below
average because you don’t know the average until you have all 20 values. Unfortunately, if you
attempt to assign 20 sales values to the same variable, when you assign the value for the second
employee, it replaces the value for the first employee.
PTS: 1 REF: 398
2. What is a subscript and how are the array’s elements numbered?
ANS:
A subscript is an integer contained within square brackets that indicates one of an array’s variables, or
elements. In Java, any array’s elements are numbered beginning with 0, so you can legally use any
subscript from 0 to 19 when working with an array that has 20 elements.
PTS: 1 REF: 399
3. What does an array’s name represent and what value does it hold when declared?
ANS:
Array names represent computer memory addresses; that is, array names contain references, as do all
Java objects. When you declare an array name, no computer memory address is assigned to it. Instead,
the array variable name has the special value null, or Unicode value ‘\u0000’. When you declare
int[] someNums;, the variable someNums has a value of null.
PTS: 1 REF: 404
4. When working with arrays, why is it beneficial to use a loop with a declared symbolic constant equal
to the size of the array?
ANS:
It is convenient to declare a symbolic constant equal to the size of the array and use the symbolic
constant as a limiting value in every loop that processes the array. That way, if the array size changes
in the future, you need to modify only the value stored in the symbolic constant, and you do not need
to search for and modify the limiting value in every loop that processes the array.
PTS: 1 REF: 407
5. When using an array with all elements used, why would a programmer use a loop control variable
from 0 to one less than the size of the array? Give an example.
ANS:
When an application contains an array and you want to use every element of the array in some task, it
is common to perform loops that vary the loop control variable from 0 to one less than the size of the
array. For example, if you get input values for the elements in the array, alter every value in the array,
sum all the values in the array, or display every element in the array, you need to perform a loop that
executes the same number of times as there are elements.
PTS: 1 REF: 406
6. How would you use a method that belongs to an object that is part of the array? Use an example and
demonstrate with Java code.
ANS:
To use a method that belongs to an object that is part of an array, you insert the appropriate subscript
notation after the array name and before the dot that precedes the method name. For example, to print
data for seven Employees stored in the emp array, you can write the following:
for(int x = 0; x < NUM_EMPLOYEES; ++x)
[Link] (emp[x].getEmpNum() + " " +
emp[x].getSalary());
PTS: 1 REF: 411
7. Why would you use spacing when initializing parallel arrays?
ANS:
When you initialize parallel arrays, it is convenient to use spacing so that the values that correspond to
each other visually align on the screen or printed page.
PTS: 1 REF: 420
8. How would a programmer perform a range match when writing an application that takes into
consideration different discount rates for customers? Give an example.
ANS:
Create two corresponding arrays and perform a range match, in which you compare a value to the
endpoints of numerical ranges to find the category in which a value belongs. For example, one array
can hold the five discount rates, and the other array can hold five discount range limits. If you only use
the first figure in each range, you can create an array that holds five low limits:
int[] discountRangeLimit= {1, 13, 50, 100, 200};
A parallel array can hold the five discount rates:
double[] discountRate = {0, 0.10, 0.14, 0.18, 0.20};
Then, starting at the last discountRangeLimit array element, for any numOfItems greater than
or equal to discountRangeLimit[4], the appropriate discount is discount[4]. In other
words, for any numOrdered less than discountRangeLimit[4], you should decrement the
subscript and look in a lower range.
PTS: 1 REF: 422
9. What is different about passing an array to a method rather than passing a primitive type to a method?
ANS:
The outcome is quite different when you pass an array (that is, pass its name) to a method. Arrays, like
all nonprimitive objects, are reference types; this means that the object actually holds a memory
address where the values are stored and the receiving method gets a copy of the array’s actual memory
address. Therefore, the receiving method has access to, and the ability to alter, the original values in
the array elements in the calling method.
PTS: 1 REF: 426-427
10. How can you use the enhanced for loop?
ANS:
You can use the enhanced for loop to cycle through an array of objects. For example, to display data
for seven Employees stored in the emp array, you can write the following:
for(Employee worker : emp)
[Link]([Link]() + " " + [Link]();
In this loop, worker is a local variable that represents each element of emp in turn. Using the
enhanced for loop eliminates the need to use a limiting value for the loop and eliminates the need for
a subscript following each element.
PTS: 1 REF: 412
11. When populating an array with an initialization list, you do not need to use the new keyword or
provide an array size. Explain why this is the case.
ANS:
When you populate an array upon creation by providing an initialization list, you do not
give the array a size because the size is assigned based on the number of values you place in the
initializing list. Also, when you initialize an array, you do not need to use the keyword new. New
memory is assigned based on the length of the list of provided values.
PTS: 1 REF: 404
12. Why is the length field a good option when writing a loop that manipulates an array? What
programming error is common when attempting to use length as an array method?
ANS:
You can use a field (instance variable) that is automatically assigned a value for every array you
create. The length field contains the number of elements in the array. Later, if you modify the size
of the array and recompile the program, the value in the length field of the array changes
appropriately. When you work with array elements, it is always better to use a symbolic constant or the
length field when writing a loop that manipulates an array.
A frequent programmer error is to attempt to use length as an array method, referring to
[Link](). However, length is not an array method; it is a field. An instance
variable or object field such as length is also called a property of the object.
PTS: 1 REF: 407
13. While you can provide any legal identifier you want for an array, conventional rules are typically
followed. List and describe the naming conventions for naming arrays.
ANS:
Java programmers conventionally name arrays by following the same rules they use for variables:
Array names start with a lowercase letter.
Use uppercase letters to begin subsequent words.
Additionally, many programmers observe one of the following conventions to make it
more obvious that the name represents a group of items:
Arrays are often named using a plural noun such as studentScores.
Arrays are often named by adding a final word that implies a group, such as salesList.
PTS: 1 REF: 398-399
14. int[] sixNumbers = {1, 2, 3, 4};
The above code creates an array named sixNumbers. Describe how array sizes are determined when
using an initialization list and how memory is assigned.
ANS:
When you populate an array upon creation by providing an initialization list, you do not give the array
a size—the size is assigned based on the number of values you place in the initializing list. For
example, the sixNumbers array in the sample code has a size of 4. Also, when you initialize an
array, you do not need to use the keyword new because new memory is assigned based on the length
of the list of provided values. In Java, you cannot directly initialize part of an array. For example, you
cannot create an array of 10 elements and initialize only five; you must initialize either every element
or none of them.
PTS: 1 REF: 404
15. The following statement declares an array:
int[] increaseValues = new int[5]
final int PLUSTWO = 2;
Create a loop that will add 2 to every array element. Use a symbolic constant named PLUSTWO and
use the length field in the loop that will contain the number of elements in the array.
ANS:
for(counter = 0; counter < [Link]; ++counter)
increaseValues[counter] += PLUSTWO;
PTS: 1 REF: 406-407
CASE
1. public class CostArray
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
double[] costs = new double[3];
costs[0] = 5.00;
costs[1] = 7.00;
costs[2] = 9.00;
[Link](costs[3]);
}
}
Once the above code is compiled and executed, an error message is generated. Explain the error
message that will result and explain the reason for the error.
ANS:
An out-of-bounds error is generated when the code is compiled and executed. The last executable line
in the code is an output statement that attempts to display a costs value using a subscript that is
beyond the range of the array: [Link](costs[3]). The program will run
successfully when the subscript used with the array is 0, 1, or 2. However, when the subscript reaches
3, the ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException error is generated. The message indicates that the
subscript is out of bounds and that the offending index is 3.
PTS: 1 REF: 403
2. String[] countyNames = {"Clark", "Delaware", "Madison"};
Using the above statement, what will be the value of countyNames[0], countyNames[1], and
countyNames[2]?
ANS:
countyNames[0] will hold the value “Clark”
countyNames[1] will hold the value “Delaware”
countyNames[2] will hold the value “Madison”
PTS: 1 REF: 412
3. Write the statement to create an array named studentScores that will store five integer value
student scores. Initialize the array using an initialization list with the values 70, 85, 92, 67, and 76.
ANS:
int[] studentScores = {70, 85, 92, 67, 76};
PTS: 1 REF: 404
4. Using just one statement, declare and create an array that will reserve memory locations for 10
scores values that are type double.
ANS:
double[] scores = new double[10];
PTS: 1 REF: 399
5. Write the statement to declare an array of integers that will hold studentScores.
and Theotimus,[16] who wrote against Epicurus, being accused by
Zeno, an Epicurean, were both put to death.
The Lacedemonians[17] constantly expelled foreigners, and would
not suffer their own citizens to dwell in foreign parts, because they
imagined that both the one and the other tended to corrupt and
weaken their own laws; nor would they suffer the teaching of
rhetoric or philosophy, because of the quarrels and disputes that
attended it. The Scythians, who delighted in human blood, and
were, as Josephus says,[18] little different from beasts, yet were
zealously tenacious of their own rites, and put Anacharsis, a very
wise person, to death, because he seemed to be very fond of the
Grecian rites and ceremonies. [D]Herodotus[19] says, that he was shot
through the heart with an arrow, by Saulius their king, for sacrificing
to the mother of the gods after the manner of the Grecians; and that
Scyles, another of their kings, was deposed by them, for sacrificing
to Bacchus, and using the Grecian ceremonies of religion, and his
head afterwards cut off by Octamasades, who was chosen king in
his room. “So rigid were they,” says the historian,[20] “in maintaining
their own customs, and so severe in punishing the introducers of
foreign rites.” Many also amongst the Persians[21] were put to death,
on the same account. And, indeed, it was almost the practice of all
nations to punish those who disbelieved or derided their national
gods; as appears from Timocles, who, speaking of the gods of the
Egyptians,[22] says, “How shall the ibis, or the dog, preserve me?”
And then adds, “Where is the place that doth not immediately
punish those who behave impiously towards the gods, such as are
confessed to be gods?”
SECT. III.
Egyptian persecutions.
Juvenal[23] gives us a very tragical account of some disputes and
quarrels about religion amongst the Egyptians, who entertained an
eternal hatred and enmity against each other, and eat and devoured
one another, because they did not all worship the same god.
“[24]Ombos and Tentyr, neighbouring towns, of late,
Broke into outrage of deep fester’d hate.
Religious spite and pious spleen bred first
This quarrel, which so long the bigots nurst.
Each calls the other’s god a senseless stock,
His own, divine, tho’ from the self-same block.
At first both parties in reproaches jar,
And make their tongues the trumpets of the war.
Words serve but to inflame the warlike lists,
Who wanting weapons clutch their horny fists.
Yet thus make shift t’ exchange such furious blows,
Scarce one escapes with more than half a nose.
Some stand their ground with half their visage gone,
But with the remnant of a face fight on.
Such transform’d spectacles of horror grow,
That not a mother her own son would know,
One eye remaining for the other spies,
Which now on earth a trampled gelly lies.”
All this religious zeal hitherto is but mere sport and childish play,
and therefore they piously proceed to farther violences; to hurling of
stones, and throwing of arrows, till one party routs the other, and
the conquerors feast themselves on the mangled bodies of their
divided captives.
“Yet hitherto both parties think the fray
But mockery of war, mere children’s play.
This whets their rage, to search for stones——
An Ombite wretch (by headlong strait betray’d,
And falling down i’th’ rout) is prisoner made.
Whose flesh torn off by lumps the ravenous foe
In morsels cut, to make it farther go.
His bones clean pick’d, his very bones they gnaw;
No stomach’s balk’d, because the corps is raw.
T’ had been lost time to dress him: keen desire
Supplies the want of kettle, spit, and fire.”
Plutarch[25] also relates, that in his time some of the Egyptians
who worshipped a dog, eat one of the fishes, which others of the
Egyptians adored as their deity; and that upon this, the fish eaters
laid hold on the other’s dogs, and sacrificed and eat them; and that
this gave occasion to a bloody battle, in which a great number were
destroyed on both sides.
SECT. IV.
Persecutions by Antiochus Epiphanes.
Antiochus Epiphanes, though a very wicked prince, yet was a
great zealot for his religion, and endeavoured to propagate it by all
the methods of the most bloody persecution. Josephus[26] tells us,
that after he had taken Jerusalem, and plundered the temple, he
caused an altar to be built in it, upon which he sacrificed swine,
which were an abomination to the Jews, and forbidden by their laws.
Not content with this, he compelled them to forsake the worship of
the true God, and to worship such as he accounted deities; building
altars and temples to them in all the towns and streets, and offering
swine upon them every day. He commanded them to forbear
circumcising their children, grievously threatening such as should
disobey his orders. He also appointed overseers, or bishops, to
compel the Jews to come in, and do as he had ordered them. Such
as rejected it, were continually persecuted, and put to death, with
the most grievous tortures. He ordered them to be cruelly scourged,
and their bodies to be tore, and, before they expired under their
tortures, to be crucified. The women, and the children which they
circumcised, were, by his command, hanged; the children hanging
from the necks of their crucified parents. Wherever he found any of
the sacred books, or of the law, he destroyed them, undoubtedly to
prevent the propagation of heretical opinions, and punished with
death such as kept them. The same author tells us also, in his
History of the Maccabees, that Antiochus put forth an edict, whereby
he made it death for any to observe the Jewish religion, and
compelled them, by tortures, to abjure it. The inhuman barbarities
he exercised upon Eleazar and the Maccabees, because they would
not renounce their religion, and sacrifice to his Grecian gods, are
not, in some circumstances, to be paralleled by any histories of
persecution extant; and will ever render the name and memory of
that illustrious tyrant execrable and infamous. It was on the same
religious account that he banished the philosophers[27] from all parts
of his kingdom; the charge against them being, “their corrupting the
youth,” i. e. teaching them notions of the gods, different from the
common orthodox opinions which were established by law; and
commanded Phanias, that such youths as conversed with them
should be hanged.
those other kinds of stealing. The man who breaks into your house
or who picks your pocket is generally one who is pretty badly off,
and who needs what he takes more than the people do from whom
he takes it. You do not expect to find rich men setting up as
burglars or pickpockets. It is true, sometimes you do find people
who have a passion for stealing things when they have plenty of
money to buy them; but that is commonly considered to be a
special kind of insanity, and they have a name made on purpose for
it; they call it "kleptomania." The people who do this are supposed
to be crazy on this particular point; but is it not really just the same
thing for a man who has enough and to spare to be trying to cheat
his neighbor? Such a man, it would seem, must be crazy too.
And there is another way in which cheating is a strange thing, and
especially in a Catholic. For every Catholic at least must know that
if he tries to cheat he himself gets cheated worse than the people
he is trying to impose on. For he gets himself into a very bad
position. He has got to do one of two things. One is to restore, as
far as possible, what he has cheated other people out of; and that
is a very hard thing to do sometimes—much harder than it would
have been to have left cheating alone. But hard as this is, the other
is much harder. For the other thing is to go to hell; to be banished
from God for ever; to pay for all eternity the debt which he would
not pay here.
Do not, then, my brethren, get yourselves into this position. But if
you are in it do the first of these two things. Restore your ill-gotten
goods. Do it now; not put it off till you come to die. It will cost you
a struggle then as well as now; and even if you try to do it then, it
is doubtful if those who come after you will carry out your wishes.
A purpose to restore which is put off till a time when you cannot be
sure of carrying it out is rather a weak bridge on which to pass to
eternal life. Remember now what you will Wish at the hour of
death to have remembered; remember those words of our Lord:
"What doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer
the loss of his own soul?"
Sermon XLVI.
Those of you, my brethren, who are keeping Lent as it should be
kept are beginning by this time, if I am not mistaken, to think that
it is a pretty long and tedious season. Fasting and abstinence,
giving up many worldly amusements, getting up early in the
morning and going to Mass as so many of you do, and other such
things, get to be rather tiresome to the natural man after a few
days; and I have no doubt you are quite glad that Lent does not
last the whole year, and are looking forward to the time when it will
be over. I have always noticed that there were not many at Mass in
Easter week, and there are very few, I imagine, who fast or abstain
much then.
And perhaps you are even inclined to say: "What ever did the
church get up Lent for at all? Certainly we could be good Christians
without it, or save our souls, at any rate." But when you come to
think of it you know well enough why Lent was instituted. You
know that we cannot save our souls without abstaining from sin,
and that we shall not be likely to abstain from sin unless we
abstain sometimes also from what is not sinful. You know also that
we cannot get to heaven without doing penance for our sins, and
that it is better to do penance here than in purgatory. And you
know, too, that most people will not abstain much or do much
penance beyond what the church commands; so you know why the
church got up Lent.
She did it that we might get to heaven sooner and more surely.
That ought to be our encouragement, then, in it, that every good
Lent brings us a good deal nearer to heaven; that heaven is the
reward of penance and mortification. And it is partly to keep this
before our minds that the church tells us in to-day's Gospel the
story of our Lord's transfiguration: how he took Peter and James
and John up with him on Mount Thabor, and there appeared to
them in his glory; and filled their hearts with renewed courage and
confidence in him, and with a firm belief that it was worth their
while to follow him, even if they had to sleep out at night, and not
get much to eat, and suffer in many ways—that it was worth while
for the sake of the good time coming, of which his glory was a
promise, though they did not know just when or what it would be.
They thought, perhaps, it would be in this world; that their Master
would come out in the power and majesty that they could see that
he had, put down all his enemies, and reign as a great king on the
earth. We know better; we know, or ought to know, that it will not
be in this world. But we know that the good time coming will be
something a great deal better than anything that can be in this
world.
So we ought to be a great deal more encouraged than they were,
especially when we think how little, after all, we have to suffer
compared with what was asked of our Lord's chosen apostles. We
do not have to sleep on the ground, or live on grains of wheat
picked off the stalk in the fields, as they sometimes had to do. We
have not got to look forward, as they did after his death, to long
and painful labors and journeyings, to being driven from one city to
another, to being scourged and buffeted, and put at last to a cruel
death. No; on the whole, we have got a pretty easy time. We
probably will not starve; nobody will persecute us; we will most
likely always have a house to live in, and die in our beds.
It is not much, then, is it, to eat fish instead of meat, to fast
enough to have a good appetite, to lose a little sleep and get a
little tired? Perhaps if we would think more of the reward for such
little things, and think a little more of the good time coming in
heaven, we might even wish that Lent was more than forty days
long.
Third Sunday of Lent
Epistle.
Ephesians v. 1-9.
Brethren:
Be ye followers of God, as most dear children. And walk in love
as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us
an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odor of sweetness. But
fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so
much as be named among you, as becometh saints: nor
obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor scurrility, which is to no
purpose: but rather giving of thanks. For know ye this, and
understand that no fornicator, nor unclean, nor covetous person
which is a serving of idols hath any inheritance in the kingdom
of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words.
For because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the
children of unbelief. Be ye not therefore partakers with them.
For you were heretofore darkness, but now light in the Lord.
Walk ye as children of the light: for the fruit of the light is in all
goodness, and justice, and truth.
Gospel.
St. Luke xi. 14-28.
At that time: Jesus was casting out a devil, and the same was
dumb; and when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke;
and the multitude admired: but some of them said: He casteth
out devils in Beelzebub, the prince of the devils. And others
tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven. But he, seeing their
thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself
shall be brought to desolation, and a house upon a house shall
fall. And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his
kingdom stand? because you say, that in Beelzebub I cast out
devils. Now if I cast out devils in Beelzebub, in whom do your
children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But
if I, in the finger of God, cast out devils, doubtless the kingdom
of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth
his court, those things which he possesseth are in peace. But if
a stronger than he come upon him and overcome him, he will
take away all his armor wherein he trusted, and will distribute
his spoils. He that is not with me, is against me: and he that
gathereth not with me, scattereth. When the unclean spirit is
gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water,
seeking rest: and not finding, he saith: I will return into my
house whence I came out. And when he is come, he findeth it
swept and garnished. Then he goeth and taketh with him seven
other spirits more wicked than himself, and entering in they
dwell there. And the last state of that man becometh worse
than the first. And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a
certain woman from the crowd lifting up her voice, said to him:
Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave
thee suck. But he said: Yea, rather, blessed are they who hear
the word of God and keep it.
Sermon XLVII.
Every kingdom divided against itself
shall be brought to desolation.
—St. Luke xi. 17.
We can see at once how true the sentence just read is; for if the
head of a kingdom were to rise against the members, the king
against his ministers, the people against both king and government,
and the army and navy against their proper commanders—if all this
should take place, then I say that kingdom would certainly be
brought to desolation, and any enemy could easily come along and
take possession of it. Now, dear brethren, the Christian family is a
little kingdom. The father and mother are the king and queen, the
older and more experienced members of the family are the
counsellors, the children the subjects of that kingdom. The
Christian family ought to be most closely united, and this for many
reasons. Each member has been baptized with the same baptism,
been sanctified by the same Holy Spirit. They have all been
pardoned for their sins through the same Precious Blood, do all eat
of the same spiritual food, the Body and Blood of Christ. Then, to
come to natural reasons, they are bound together by the tie of
blood, by the tie of parental and filial affection; they live together,
pray together, rejoice together, suffer together. So there is every
reason why the Christian family should be united; and if it is to
fulfil its mission properly it must be united, or it will be brought to
desolation. O my dear friends! how many of these little kingdoms
which should go to make up the grand empire of Jesus Christ upon
earth fall away from their allegiance to him, and all because they
are divided against themselves. We see a father, for instance, given
over to habits of drunkenness; he comes home either in a dull,
heavy stupor or else in a perfect fury of rage; he worries his wife,
scares his children, disgraces himself; all his family shrink from him.
There you see at once the head divided against the members. Or
there is in the family a cross, ill-tempered, scolding wife, and, as
the Scripture says, "there is no anger above the anger of a woman:
it will be more agreeable to abide with a lion and a dragon than to
dwell with a wicked woman. As the climbing of a sandy way is to
the feet of the aged, so is a wife full of tongue to a quiet man."
Such a woman would divide any family; she destroys the unity
thereof just as much as the drunken husband. What, also, must be
thought of interfering relations, cousins, aunts, uncles, and last, but
not least, mothers-in-law? How often do they make mischief and
destroy the kingdom of the Christian family! So, too, rebellious
children, quarrelsome brothers and sisters—they all destroy peace,
they all help to divide the kingdom, they all help to bring it to
desolation; and in the end, instead of a fair kingdom, strong and
united, nothing remains but a wretched scene of strife and
contention, and in comes the devil and takes possession of
everything. Now, my dear friends, when by your drunkenness, your
crossness, your mischief-making and party-spirit, by your rebellion
against parental authority, you divide the kingdom of your family,
not only you yourselves will suffer, not only will you and your family
have to endure spiritual injury and perhaps loss of salvation, but
the great kingdom of Christ, now militant here on earth, and one
day to be triumphant in heaven, suffers also. Who make up the
church on earth? Individuals, families. Who are to fill the ranks of
the heavenly kingdom? The same. Oh! then, if you are divided
against yourselves, if you are brought to desolation, you are part of
the devil's kingdom on earth, and will form part of his empire of sin
and death in hell. For God's sake, brethren, stop this evil war.
Stop these things which make the family miserable. Have peace in
your homes. Let men see that the peace of Christ and the union of
Christ dwell there. Correct your faults; curb your tongues and your
tempers; be obedient. Remember, the first words the priest says
when he comes to your homes on a sick-call are these: "Peace be
to this house and all that dwell therein." Try to profit by that
benediction. Try always to have the peace of God, which passeth all
knowledge, and then shall your kingdom stand.
Rev. Algernon A. Brown.
Sermon XLVIII.
"Are you going to make your Easter duty?" This is an important
question just now, my dear brethren. You should put it to
yourselves, and your answer should be: "Yes, certainly." The church
commands it; and you know very well that he who will not hear the
church is to be held as a heathen and a publican; that he who
despises the church despises our Lord, and he who despises the
Lord despises his Father who is in heaven. Surely you will not make
yourselves guilty of this frightful sin of contempt; surely you do not
wish to be held as a heathen. But knowing, as you do, the precept
of the church binding at this time, how can you expect, if you do
not fulfil it, to escape from the consequences of your disobedience,
as expressed in the words of our Lord which I have just recited?
To go against the church in one of her commands is to spurn her
authority altogether. It is strange that people should make, of their
own wits or fancy, distinctions between the precepts of the church,
when the church makes and acknowledges no such distinctions.
The authority in all cases is the same, and, therefore, the
commands are all equally binding. Yet how many Catholics who
would scruple to eat meat on Friday or miss Mass on Sunday think
nothing at all of breaking, without reason, the fast and abstinence
of Lent, and give no heed whatever to the obligation of going to
confession and communion in Easter-time! It really looks, to judge
from their conduct, as if this Easter duty was not on an equal
footing with the other commands of the church; as if the church
did not mean what she prescribes. Now, the truth of it is, to this
precept is attached a more severe sanction than to any other. The
church makes any Catholic who violates it liable to
excommunication, and deprivation of burial in consecrated ground.
So you see the obligation is very strict and the church is terribly in
earnest about it, if you are not.
To take matters in your own hands, as so many Catholics do on
this point, and call little what she calls great, and slight an order
that she is so anxious about, is to be a heathen, or, at any rate, a
Protestant; it is to set your private judgment above her authority; it
is to despise God, who commands through her. If you would only
take this view of it—and this is the true view to take—you would
think more than once before you would say: "O pshaw! any other
time will do. Once a year? All right; I find it more convenient to go
at Christmas." No, any other time will not do; once a year will not
do, unless it be just now at this time. Christmas is a glorious feast,
and Christmas-tide a joyful season, but it is not the season
prescribed by the church for your annual communion; and, heathen
that you are, your convenience is not the main point to be
CHAPTER XXIV
NAT IN DESPAIR
THE rest must follow—was already on its way, in as sure a course as
that of the golden autumn days—and already with speculations
concerning Jenny Salter’s daughter were mingled others with regard
to her son. For the lad was altered, that could not be denied—the
disgrace of his sister seemed to have wrought a change in him.
Indeed it would be difficult to express in sufficiently vivid words
the alteration that was observed in Nat—a change all the more
apparent from the strength and youth which continued persistently
to belong to him. His hair was still crisp, with a tendency to curl, his
colour still bright with heat and harvest-work; and beneath the
broad straw hat, convenient for harvest-time, his face was as
handsome as it had ever been. But he seemed careworn, was
restless and abstracted, started when he was called, preferred to
work alone—to his features had come that look of ceaseless trouble
which does not often accompany the trouble of the young. The
disgrace of his sister might account for this alteration, but there
appeared to be much that was strange in it all the same. Poor Nat!
he could not have told, even if he had asked himself, how much of
his own trouble was caused by his sense of the continual suspicion
under which his sister lay—the abiding home-grief, which was
renewed every evening by the sight of her obstinate silence and his
mother’s dumb despair. It was that sense of disgrace which
aggravated the knowledge that he himself deserved disgrace; the
double weight was a load intensified, a burden that had become
unendurable. At night, when he awoke, he could hear himself
muttering; but in the day-time his pride supported him, and his
misery was dumb. For he had no friend to whom he could confide
his trouble, and the atmosphere of his home-life had not been one
of confidences.
Yet there was danger! he had felt it from the moment when he
knew that the Squire was dissatisfied with the letter he had received
from Mr Lee, that he had laid it on one side as a matter in need of
explanation, and that he was determined to speak to Mr Lee on his
return. The letter might have been opened, he could not be sure
that it had not been; and in any case investigations were dangerous
—for he was aware that the slightest suspicion on the part of his
employer would be sufficient to alter the conduct of the Squire.
Meanwhile the continued kindness with which Mr Mallory treated him
supplied the burn of a perpetual reproach; and there were moments
when he could have found it in his heart to throw himself at his
master’s feet and confess his fault. He could not—the fault belonged
also to another, and he could not betray another in the attempt to
save himself.
So struggled his feelings during the course of harvest-work, whilst
blue sky shone down upon the golden fields, and gleaners with
children by their sides made up their bundles, and men and boys
shouted above last loads of corn. It was only when harvest was over,
and the days became short and grey, that he began to be torn with
another pain. Miss Gillan had never seen him since a too-well-
remembered evening; she had never again sent for him to the Farm.
At first to poor Nat this seemed only natural; but, as time went on
and there came no sign from her, the desire to see her became a
craving pain.
Oh, he had made up his mind in the first rush of penitence that he
would never go to the Farm again, that if she asked for him he
would send a refusal, and that he would break resolutely from her
influence. And now there was no need for so much determination,
for it was evident that she did not care for him. And all his resolve
became lost in the craving; ‘If he could only see her and speak to
her again!’
Through a warm, cloudy morning in September when the Fens
were grey, shadowy, and misty sunlight lay on the village streets,
whilst far in the eastern sky was an ominous tinge of red—through
these signs of approaching tempest Nat found his way once more to
the Farm. He was trying to justify himself by many reasons—the
poor dog, crawling back to his owner’s feet. Oh, he could not do
without her, though he had tried to do so; it would be enough if he
could see her face again.
The back-door was open, and he could hear the sound of music—
she was in the old kitchen, and was playing dances there. Nat
trembled to feel how fast his heart was beating, so that he could
scarcely pronounce the words that asked if she were within. In
another minute little Molly brought back her message—Miss Gillan
was obliged to him, but she would not need him again. Nat did not
answer, he felt that he could not answer; without looking back he
turned away at once.
He was engaged to do harvest-work, but he knew that labour was
impossible—he went out into the fields and wandered there for
hours. When he returned home in the evening, he found that a
message had preceded him—Mr James Robson had sent to ask
Jenny why her son had not appeared; and had added, moreover,
that the lad was getting ‘strange and idle,’ and that he wished the
mother would ‘say a word’ to him. Jenny did say a word, she even
said many words, with the cold severity that was her manner of
greatest displeasure; and she ended by refusing to let Nat have his
tea, telling him that she could not afford to give him meals for which
he did not work. No doubt, it would have been better if she had
avoided that childish punishment, but the sore weight of her own
troubles lay upon her heart; and, moreover, it is not always easy for
a mother to be certain whether to treat a lad of seventeen like a
man or like a child. Nat found himself next morning too sick and
depressed to eat; but he would not make any complaint, and went
doggedly to his work—not relieved when he was told by his master
before the other boys and men that a ‘moocher’ deserved a
thrashing, and, if he were his son, would get it too. Mr James
Robson intended to give a kindly warning, but a proud nature does
not receive warnings well; and although Nat set to work with
stubborn earnestness, his resolution only issued from pride and
despair. He knew indeed that it would not be difficult to regain his
credit as long as he continued to be the Squire’s favourite; but even
that thought was a bitter consolation, which could not comfort him
in his temporary disgrace. If he should ever fall from the favour of
the Squire, he would not again hold up his head amongst his
companions.
Poor Nat! If any artist had passed by the harvest-field he must
have been struck by the sight of his youth and strength, of his well-
formed arms with shirt sleeves rolled to the elbows, and of the
beauty of his flushed, sunburnt face. But this picture, so ready for an
artist’s hand, was under conditions which might render it less
desirable—though the mental torments under which the lad was
writhing had not been able to work much outward ravage yet. For
the first time Nat felt drawn to forbidden pleasures, to anything that
would still the raging thirst of life—he longed to enter the lighted
public-house, to sing and dance there, and drink away his fear and
shame. His old pride restrained him, that pride of old respectability
which is too often the only safe-guard left. He would wait till he saw
if the Squire had any suspicion; after that it would not matter what
became of him.
And then, on an autumn evening, as he went by the wall of the
Farm, going down into the village after his work for the Squire, the
little door in the wall opened suddenly before he reached it, and Tina
Gillan came out, without seeing him. She was in black, except for a
knot of red ribbons in her hat; she walked with uncertain steps as if
she were quivering. In this strange, restless manner she went down
the road; and, at some distance, Nat cautiously followed her.
It was a grey evening, and there was a stormy wind. About the
streets lay straw fallen from the loads of corn; the dead leaves had
been whirled into drifts, or lay scattered upon the path; the rising
ground in the distance was dull with purple mist. A mournful time, as
full of suggestions of trouble as the restless, black figure that went
down the village street, that passed the old tree with its yellow,
withering leaves, and pushed open with difficulty the heavy church-
yard gate. Nat followed her—she went down the church-yard path,
and turned through the open door into the church, into the dim
church where she at length stood still, and in which his footstep at
length became audible. In another instant she had turned round,
and then turned upon him, with the wildest gestures, and with wild,
flashing eyes.
‘Oh, have you come here to taunt me,’ cried Tina, ‘to repeat to me
again what my brother’s letter tells, to remind me how clever you
have all been in deceiving me, so that he has been able to disgrace
and ruin us both? It was a fine scheme you concocted with my
brother—you and your sister, the low, hateful, village hussy—but if it
brings shame to us I can assure you that at any rate it will bring no
good to you. If I had known more I need not have wished for the
Squire’s letter, in order to try and discover what my brother would
not tell me! Mr Lee will not forgive us, you need not think he will;
you will not be able to squeeze money out of him!’
She put out her hands as if she would have torn him; and, as she
did so, Nat seized her in his arms. He was so much excited that he
did not know what he did ... he poured out protestations .... he
grasped her arms with his hands. And, even at that instant, he
became aware in his turn of a footstep—Alice Robson was standing
in the dim church by his side.
A terrible moment! He felt blind and faint, he could not resist the
escape of Tina from his grasp; with a blind movement he put out his
hands, and leant on the font to keep himself on his feet. And as he
leant against it, in darkness and bewilderment, he heard the voice of
his old companion.
‘Oh what have you done, Nat, what will become of you? Mother
came to fetch her hymn-book, she has heard and seen everything.’
hänellä on poika mukanaan.
Hän riensi portaita alas vastaanottamaan ystäväänsä. Hassel
heilutti iloisesti kättään hänelle.
— All right, my boy! huusi hän.
lapset töllöttivät suu auki, herra Hassel kohotti hattuaan, Mark teki
samoin.
Harjula jäi taakse.
Ja nyt hän oli täällä, Kaunialassa.
Mutta miksi?
— Saitko varmoja tietoja? kysyi Ulrik Schöring Hasselilta matalalla
äänellä.
— Kukaan ei Hampurissakaan tiennyt mitään, jota en olisi jo
ennestään tiennyt. Mutta olen väsynyt etsimään ja kyselemään. Otan
Markin pojakseni — hän on orpo ja minä lapseton — me kaksi
sovimme yhteen. Ja sitten en enää etsi.
Ulrik löi häntä olalle.
— Oikein puhuttu, Hassel. Pois turha mietiskely ja raskasmielisyys.
Tunnen taas vanhan tarmokkaan Fred-veikkoni. Nyt on meillä yksi
ilonaihe lisää tänä päivänä.
Hassel vihelsi.
ajoilta, jolloin he kamppailivat yhdessä ja tahtoivat toisiaan
rohkaista.
trillat, kruununvoudin keltaiset Turun kiesit.
vastaanottamassa, toisella puolella Hassel, toisella Ulrik Schöring.
Suupielissä värähti petollisesti, hänen huumorille altis mielensä nautti
tilanteesta.
mielenmuutoksesta. Hän muisti vanhan sananlaskun oluttynnyristä ja
hymähti.
Mutta kun pikkupappilan väki saapui, saivat he erikoisen
sydämellisen vastaanoton. Minnan osalle tuli lämmin syleily ja tädin
tuttu reipas taputus selkään. Vähältä piti, etteivät he molemmat,
jatkoi nimismiehen rouva. — Hypistelin sitä, se on paksuinta atlasta.
— No niin, toisten on helppo vastaanottaa armolahjoja, sanoi Alma
Örnfelt.
Puhe kääntyi Markiin ja hänen ihmeelliseen onneensa.
Harjulan rouva ylisti herra Hasselia. Tämä oli suurenmoinen
ihminen. Ja niin ystävällinen. Kunpa hän vain nyt hankkisi itselleen
vaimon. Markus tarvitsee äidin hellää kättä. Teki pahaa nähdä,
kuinka vaikea hänen oli ollut erota Naimista. Herra Hasselkin sen
huomasi.
Toiset rouvat kätkivät hymynsä.
— Päivällinen on valmis, hyvät rouvat, ilmoitti Kristiina täti ovella.
Pitkällä ruokasalin pöydällä kohtasi silmä kaikki sen ajan parhaat
herkut.
— Keittäjä oli tuotu kaupungista, tiesi kruununvoudin rouva
kertoa.
kaiken muun? Täällähän on kaikki niinkuin ennenkin? kysyi Elviira
rouva Kristiina tädiltä.
— Ulrik on ostanut takaisin kaiken, mikä Kaunialan huutokaupassa
— Varmaankin, kuului vanhan neidin kuiva vastaus.
Paistin aikana kohotti vanha rovasti lasinsa ja pyydettyään
hiljaisuutta lausui:
— Pitäjän sielunpaimenena ja vanhana ystävänä otan itselleni
tänäpäivänä oikeuden lausua Kaunialan isännän tervetulleeksi
sukunsa kotiin. Me, jotka nyt olemme kokoontuneet näiden
vieraanvaraisten tuttujen seinien sisäpuolella, iloitsemme kaikki siitä,
että Schöringin suvun perinnäistavat jatkuvat edelleen tarmokkaassa
isännässämme. Herra on antanut hänen kokea maanpakoa ja
kärsimyksiä, mutta taistelussa on hänen tarmonsa terästynyt. En
oikein intiaanimainen riemuhuuto.
— Hei, hei, eläköön! Eläköön Ulrik Schöring!
Harjulan ja pappilan lapset siinä huusivat, Ulla ylimpänä äänessä.
Sitten astui Sarvimäen paroni Ulrikin luo kilistäen hänen kanssaan.
Hänen suopeat kasvonsa loistivat tyytyväisyydestä. — Iloitsen
sukumuistojen puolesta, hän sanoi puristaen isäntänsä kättä.
Toiset vieraat seurasivat hänen esimerkkiään. Pian oli Ulrik
onnittelevan ihmispiirin ympäröimänä. Hän kuunteli heidän
mairittelevia sanojaan hajamielisenä. Hänen katseensa etsi Minnaa.
No answer. The lad slowly raised himself from the font, and stood
with his head bent, looking down upon the ground. For once, Alice
was excited, and could not restrain herself, although he had not so
much as looked at her. For, whatever the meaning of this intimacy
might be, she could not imagine that it would bring aught but ruin to
him.
‘Oh, if she was good and would do you good,’ cried Alice, ‘I
wouldn’t say a word to you, I’d be glad as you was glad. It’s not so,
it isn’t, she’s bad, she flatters you, she tries to persuade you as she
cares for you. What’s this as she’s been telling you about a letter?
you haven’t been doing any wrong to the Squire for her?’
‘So you’ve been a-spyin’, Alice Robson,’ Nat screamed out in a
frenzy—the overmastering frenzy, which is the result of rage and
shame; ‘you do things as t’ dirt in t’ street ’ud be ashamed to own,
and then speak to me as if ye was t’ parson, an’ had t’ right to
preach. I’ll make ye t’ laughing-stock of all t’ lads, I will! I’ll tell ’em
as ye cared about me though I’ve never cared for ye! Ye’ve gi’en me
a lot o’ preaching as ye thort must win my heart, but I’ve never had
a grain o’ love for ye—did ye ever think I had?’
He flung out the words as men fling blows in darkness, intent
upon striking and hurting if they can; and, as if borne backwards by
the violence of his passion, the farmer’s daughter retreated, and
leant against a seat. For one instant her face was averted, and he
could only see that she trembled; but then, with no visible effort,
she turned to him again. Her voice sounded gentle, restrained, in the
intense silence of the church; it was evident that she had regained
her self-control.
‘Nat,’ said Alice, gently, though with a slight quiver in her tone,
‘there was mother with me, she’s heard and seen everything. Ye had
better speak to her, ask her to be quiet; she might do ye harm with
the village and the Squire.’
It is impossible to say what there was in her tone and manner
that made these words have the sound of a farewell, but he
understood them—he knew that a sense of duty would not allow her
to leave him without a warning even then. She was turning away,
but she changed her mind, and stood still, leaning her hand upon
the back of a seat; her voice was as gentle in its utterance as that of
a child, who wishes to confess a fault. ‘I’m sorry I’ve given you
trouble,’ those soft tones said to him; and she went on to the great
doors, reached them, and was gone. Her footstep was only just
audible on the stones, but it had the sound of the departure of a
friend.
And he—left alone in the darkening autumn evening, which was
all the more dark and still within the church—he flung himself over
the backs of the nearest seats, and lay there with his arms hanging
down, and his face towards the ground, a shadowy, strangely
extended figure in the gloom. He did not move, he was too
miserable to move, he could not rouse himself to either tears or
prayers. Some tears gathered slowly at length, so slowly that they
could not fall—he dropped to his feet, and stole out into the night.
CHAPTER XXV
TIM AND ANNIE
WHILST Nat lay alone in the dark church the lamp had been lighted
for the evening in his home, and in the room with yellow rafters Tim
sat by Annie’s side. It was the first time he had seen her since the
summer morning when he had gone to visit her with anxiety in his
heart. That anxiety had now become unspeakable pain and dread;
but it was at least some comfort to be by her side again.
And that comfort was all the greater because Annie was so gentle,
so much more gentle than he had expected her to be. Her old
fierceness appeared to have deserted her; she had the patience, the
languor of an invalid. Upon her shoulders her beautiful hair was
resting—she excused herself for its condition by saying that she had
been too weak to fasten it—and her wan, delicate cheek leant upon
her hand as she sat and looked into the fire. Tim had never seen her
in such a mood before; he sat down by her side, but he could not
speak to her.
‘Mother’s gone out,’ said Annie, speaking softly, ‘I don’t know
when she’ll be back. But it won’t be long .... I’m not sorry. I wanted
to think. I can’t think while she is near.’ And then, as if afraid that he
would misunderstand her and be vexed, she raised her dark eyes
almost timidly, and looked at him. ‘It is good of you to come and see
me, Tim,’ she said.
Tim felt his heart throb, and a lump rose in his throat; he did not
say a word, but he held out his hand to her. Her left hand was the
nearest; and, taking hold of it, his eyes caught sight of the gleam of
her wedding-ring. As he started, he knew that she had observed his
SECT. V.
Persecutions under the Romans.
The very civil constitution of Rome was founded upon persecuting
principles. [B]Tertullian[28] tells us, “that it was an ancient decree that
no emperor should consecrate a new god, unless he was approved
by the senate;” and one of the standing laws of the republic was to
this effect, as Cicero[29] gives it: “that no one should have separately
new gods, no nor worship privately foreign gods, unless admitted by
the commonwealth.” This law he endeavours to vindicate by reason
and the light of nature, by adding,[30] “that for persons to worship
their own, or new, or foreign gods, would be to introduce confusion
and strange ceremonies in religion.” So true a friend was this
eminent Roman, and great master of reason, to uniformity of
worship; and so little did he see the equity, and indeed necessity of
an universal toleration in matters of religion. Upon this principle,
after he had reasoned well against the false notions of God that had
obtained amongst his countrymen, and the public superstitions of
religion, he concludes with what was enough to destroy the force of
all his arguments:[31] “It is the part of a wise man to defend the
customs of his ancestors, by retaining their sacred rites and
ceremonies.” Thus narrow was the foundation of the Roman religion,
and thus inconsistent the sentiments of the wisest heathens with all
the principles of toleration and universal liberty.
And agreeable to this settlement they constantly acted. A
remarkable instance of which we have in Livy, the Roman historian;
he tells us,[32] “that such a foreign religion spread itself over the city,
that either men or the gods seemed entirely changed; that the
Roman rites were not only forsaken in private, and within the
houses, but that even publicly, in the forum and capitol, great
numbers of women flocked together, who neither sacrificed nor
prayed to the gods, according to the manner of their ancestors.—
This first excited the private indignation of good men, till at length it
reached the fathers, and became a public complaint. The senate
greatly blamed the Ædiles and capital Triumvirs, that they did not
prohibit them; and when they endeavoured to drive away the
multitude from the forum, and to throw down the things they had
provided for performing their sacred rites, they were like to be torn
in pieces. And when the evil grew too great to be cured by inferior
magistrates, the senate ordered M. Atilius, the prætor of the city, to
prevent the people’s using these religions.” He accordingly published
this decree of the senate, that “whoever had any fortune-telling
books, or prayers, or ceremonies about sacrifices written down, they
should bring all such books and writings to him, before the calends
of April; and that no one should use any new or foreign rite of
sacrificing in any public or sacred place.”
Mecenas,[33] in his Advice to Augustus, says to him: “Perform
divine worship in all things exactly according to the custom of your
ancestors, and compel others to do so also; and as to those who
make any innovations in religion, hate and punish them; and that
not only for the sake of the gods, but because those who introduce
new deities, excite others to make changes in civil affairs. Hence
conspiracies, seditions, and riots, things very dangerous to
government.” Accordingly Suetonius, in his life of this prince,[34] gives
him this character: “that though he religiously observed the ancient
prescribed ceremonies, yet he contemned all other foreign ones; and
commended Caius, for that passing by Judea, he would not pay his
devotions at Jerusalem.” He also, as the same author tells us,[35]
made a law, very much resembling our test act, by which he
commanded, “that before any of the senators should take their
places in council, they should offer frankincense and wine upon the
altar of that god in whose temple they met.” It was no wonder
therefore that Christianity, which was so perfectly contrary to the
whole system of pagan theology, should be looked upon with an evil
eye; or that when the number of Christians increased, they should
incur the displeasure of the civil magistrate, and the censure of the
penal laws that were in force against them.
The first public persecution of them by the Romans was begun by
that monster of mankind, Nero; who to clear himself of the charge
of burning Rome, endeavoured to fix the crime on the Christians;
and having thus falsely and tyrannically made them guilty, he put
them to death by various methods of exquisite cruelty. But though
this was the pretence for this barbarity towards them, yet it
evidently appears from undoubted testimonies, that they were
before hated upon account of their religion, and were therefore fitter
objects to fall a sacrifice to the resentment and fury of the tyrant.
For [C]Tacitus tells us,[36] “that they were hated for their crimes.” And
what these were, he elsewhere sufficiently informs us, by calling
their religion “an execrable superstition.” In like manner Suetonius,
in his life of Nero, speaking of the Christians, says, “they were a set
of men who had embraced a new and accursed superstition.” And
ïtherefore Tacitus farther informs us,[37] that those who confessed
themselves Christians, “were condemned, not so much for the crime
of burning the city, as for their being hated by all mankind.” So that
it is evident from these accounts, that it was through popular hatred
of them for their religion, that they were thus sacrificed to the
malice and fury of Nero. Many of them he dressed up in the skins of
wild beasts, that they might be devoured by dogs. Others he
crucified. Some he cloathed in garments of pitch and burnt them,
that by their flames he might supply the absence of the day-light.
The persecution begun by Nero was revived, and carried on by
Domitian, who put some to death, and banished others upon
account of their religion. Eusebius mentions Flavia Domitilla,[38] neice
to Flavius Clemens, then consul, as banished for this reason to the
island Pontia. Dion the historian’s account of this affair is somewhat
different. He tells us,[39] “that Fabius Clemens, the consul, Domitian’s
cousin, who had married Flavia Domitilla, a near relation of
Domitian, was put to death by him, and Domitilla banished to
Pandataria, being both accused of atheism; and that on the same
account many who had embraced the Jewish rites were likewise
condemned, some of whom were put to death, and others had their
estates confiscated.” I think this account can belong to no other but
the Christians, whom Dion seems to have confounded with the Jews;
a mistake into which he and others might naturally fall, because the
first Christians were Jews, and came from the land of Judea. The

double studentScores[];
Are both of the above statements valid for declaring an array variable? Why or why not?
ANS:
You declare an array variable in the same way you declare any simple variable, but you insert a pair of
square brackets after the type. To declare an array of double values to hold studentScores, you
can write the following:
double[] studentScores;
In Java, you can also declare an array variable by placing the square brackets after the array name, as
in double studentScores[];. This format is familiar to C and C++ programmers, but the
preferred format among Java programmers is to place the brackets following the variable type and
before the variable name.
