Tutorial-6

Throughout, I shall denote an open interval of R

(1) If f : I → R be a differentiable function such that f 0 (x) = 0 for all x ∈ I thenf must be a constant
function; that is, there is a real number α such that f (x) = α for all x ∈ I.

(2) Calculate the radius of convergence of the following series

x3 x5
(i) x − 3! + 5! − ···
x2 x4 x5
(ii) 1 − 2! + 4! − ··· + 5! − ···
x2 x3
(iii) 1 + x + 2! + 3! + ···
P∞ xn
(3) Show that the function exp(x) := n=0 n! is differentiable on R by explicitly calculating its deriv-
ative using first principles.
3 5
(4) Show that the function sin(x) := x − x3! + x5! − · · · is differentiable on R by explicitly calculating its
derivative using first principles.
2 3
(5) Show that the function cos(x) := 1 + x + x2! + x3! + · · · is differentiable on R by explicitly calculating
its derivative using first principles.

(6) Prove that between any two real roots of exp(x) sin x − 1, defined on R, there is at least one real root
of exp(x) cos(x) + 1.
