1. Find the intervals on which the following differential equations are normal.

(a) y 0 = 3y/x

(b) y 00 + 3y 0 + xy = sin(x)
(c) y 000 + 9y 0 + y = log(x2 − 9)

2. Verify that the given function of solutions are basis solution.

(a) {1, x, ex } of y 000 − y 00 = 0


(b) {e−x cos(2x), e−x sin(2x)} of y 00 + 2y 0 + 5y = 0

3. Check the functions are LI/LD on I = R?

(a) x1/4 , x5/4


(b) sin(ln(x2 )), cos(ln(x2 ))

4. Solve the initial value problem

(a) y 00 + 6y 0 + 9y = 0, y(0) = 2, y 0 (0) = 3


(b) y 00 + 4y 0 + 13y = 0, y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 1

5. Let {y1 (x), y2 (x)} forms a basis of the equations and hence solve the initial value problem.

(b) {x2 , 1/x}; x2 y 00 + xy 0 − 4y = 0, y(1) = 2, y 0 (1) = 6.
(c) {x, x ln x}; x2 y 00 − xy 0 + y = 0, y(1) = 3, y 0 (1) = 4.

6. Find the differential equation of the form ay 00 + by 0 + cy = 0 for which the following
functions are solutions.

(a) ex/4 , e−3x/4


(b) e(5+3i)x , e(5−3i)x
(c) e−x , xe−x
(d) 1, e−2x

7. Find a homogeneous linear differential equation with real constant coefficients of lowest
order which has the particular solution

(a) 5 + e−x + 2e3x


(b) e−x + cos 5x + 3 sin 5x
(c) 1 + x + ex − 3e3x
(d) xe−x + e2x
(e) 3 cos 2x + 5 sinh 3x
