DEFINITION What is INSOMNIA?
is a sleep disorder in which you have trouble falling
and/or staying asleep.
The condition can be short-term (ACUTE) or can last a
long time (CHRONIC).
BACKGROUND World Health Organization - a problem initiating and/or
maintaining sleep or the complaint of non-restorative
sleep that occurs on at least three nights a week and is
associated with daytime dis- tress or impairment.
The word "insomnia' originates from the Latin
DEFINITION "in" (no) and "somnus" (sleep).
Being the first psychosomatic disorder to be
described by Johann Heinroth in 1818, insomnia
clinically presents as a subjective perception of
dissatisfaction with the amount and/or quality

INSOMNIA STATISTICS
According to a study published in 2018, six out of ten adults worldwide
experience a medical issue that impacts their sleep. Included in this list
are INSOMNIA and obstructive sleep apnea.
In the Philippines, more than 10 million adults are said to suffer from
insomnia according to extrapolated statistics of Health Grades Inc. in
2014, and this is considered to have one of the highest rates of sleep
deprivation in the world.
