KSEF places specific emphasis on integrity and ethical behavior with regard to the preparation of all written work
to be submitted for Science fairs as per its rules and regulations.

Although science personnel will provide you with information regarding reference techniques as well as ways to
avoid plagiarism, you also have a responsibility to fulfill in this regard. You are guilty of plagiarism when you
extract information from a book, article or web page without acknowledging the source and pretend that it is
your own work. In truth, you are stealing someone else’s property. This doesn’t only apply to cases where you
quote verbatim, but also when you present someone else’s work in a somewhat amended format (paraphrase),
or even when you use someone else’s deliberation without the necessary acknowledgement. You are not allowed
to use another student’s previous work. You are furthermore not allowed to let anyone copy or use your work
with the intention of presenting it as his/her own.

Students who are guilty of plagiarism will be disqualified. In addition, the matter will be referred to SRC for a
decision to be made.

• It is a brief paragraph or two, done in about 250 words.
• An abstract is a useful summary that provides justification or reason
or the research. It allows the reader to decide whether the project write-up is worth
reading or not.
• The abstract should include the following items:
A. Purpose of the project
B. Method used in data collection
C. Observation/Data/Results
D. Conclusion

HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT

• Quarter to half to one A4 page in length (250 Words)
• A brief summary of the project
• Should reflect the focus of the project
• Judges should gain a basic idea of the project after reading the abstract as a science fair is
a display of your scientific project
• Details and discussions should not be included
• An abstract should not include a bibliography

PARTS OF AN ABSTRACT
• PURPOSE: An introductory statement of the reason for choosing and doing this topic AND
a statement of the problem or hypothesis being studied.
• PROCEDURE/METHOD
A summary of the key points and an overview of how the investigation was conducted.
• OBSERVATION / DATA / RESULTS
– Provide key results that lead directly to the conclusions.

• CONCLUSIONS
– Conclusions should be described briefly.
– State some applications and extensions of the research project

INTRODUCTION:
- A brief statement about the originality of the research project, the extent of effect and
the possible attempted mitigation measures taken.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
• This is a brief overview of the problem the researcher aspires to tackle. The role of
background information includes:
●Clarification of what has brought about the need for the research or project.
● Pointing out the challenges faced in the research issue.
●Indication of the opportunities for improvement.
Statement of the problem/Originality
- An explanation in research that describes the issue the need to be addressed. What problem
is the researcher attempting to tackle/solve. The statement quickly allows the reader to
understand the purpose and the intent of the researcher.
Objectives/Hypotheses
Hypotheses – a statement of prediction of what is likely to be the outcome of the research
Objectives – a statement the describe what the research tends to achieve/ accomplish. Should be
SMART (Specific – Measurable-Achievable-Relevant- Time Bound)
Justification and significance – the rationale for one’s research/What rationalizes the research/
the justification for undertaking a given study
Limitations- merits and demerits
Limitations – these are the practical or theoretical shortcomings of study that are often out of the
researcher’s control. They are the GAPS which directs to future/further research.
Assumptions/Precautions
- it believed that there exists a relationship between two or even more variables under study.

• Brief comment about the project i.e. originality and modification, related research,
scientific principles and concepts applied, usefulness i.e. applications in real life
• Maximum of 3 pages
