Assignment

The assignment involves calculating forces on vertical piles subjected to an eccentric load, determining ultimate point loads using various methods for precast concrete piles in sand, and calculating frictional resistance for concrete piles in both sand and clay. Students are required to work in groups of 4 to 5 and submit their findings by November 17, 2025. Specific calculations include using Meyerhof's, Vesic's, and Coyle and Castello's methods for different scenarios.

Assignment

1. As shown in figure, A group of Vertical piles are subjected to an eccentric force Q, magnitude of
3200kN. Determine the maximum and the minimum forces on the piles. Q is located 0.25 m from
the x-axis and 0.20 m from the z-axis.

2. A fully embedded precast concrete pile 15m long is driven into a homogeneous sand layer' (c = 0).
The pile is square in cross section with sides measuring 0.35m. The dry unit weight of sand, γd is 18
kN/m3, the average soil friction angle is 350, and the standard penetration resistance near the vicinity
of the pile tip is 16. Calculate the ultimate point load on the pile by
a. Meyerhof's method
b. Vesic's method using and Ir = Irr = 90
c. Coyle and Castello's method

3. Consider a precast concrete pile 12 m long in a homogeneous sand soil layer. The pile cross section
305 mm x 305 mm, the unit weight of sand. γ = 16.8 kN/m3, and the soil friction angle, 350.
Determine the total frictional resistance. (use K =1,4 and δ= 0.6ϕ)
4. A concrete pile embedded in sand has a cross section of 0.305 m x 0.305 m. The length of
embedment of the pile is 15 m, the relative density of sand is 50%, and the unit weight of sand is 17
kN/m3. Determine the frictional resistance of the pile.

5. A concrete pile 0.5m x 0.5 m in cross section is embedded in a saturated clay. The length of
embedment is 16m. The undrained cohesion, cu, of clay is 60 kN/m2, and the unit weight of clay is
19.6 kN/m3. Use a factor of safety of 5 to determine the allowable load the pile can carry.
a. Use the α method
b. Use the λ method

NB
 Do by group by forming 3 groups. Number of students in one group is not greater than five
and less than four.
