SCAFFOLDING
2.1) INTRODUCTION:
As the construction of the wall continues upward a certain height is reached which make it
difficult for technicians to operate with ease from the ground. As a result, a scaffold is
supposed to be erected to help hold materials and enable the technicians to work with ease
even at a higher height.
2.2) Definition: a scaffold is temporal structure used to support workers and materials above
the ground
2.3) TYPES OF SCAFFOLD
a) Dependent scaffolds; they are also termed as putlog scaffold. This type of scaffold
depends on the wall for its support. It consists of a row of vertical members(standards) set
away from the wall at a distance that will accommodate the required width of the working
platform.
8
POCEDURE FOR ERECTING DEPENDENT OR PUTLOG SCAFFOLD
A sole plate is place on the ground
The base plate is then placed on top of the soleplate at interval 2.0m or more
depending on the load to be carried on the scaffold.
The standards are erected vertically on top of the base plate.
Ledgers are fixed across the standards and secured tightly by tying with a nail.
In other to provide a working platform, scaffold boards are placed on the putlogs.
A toe board of high not less than 1.5m is fixed on the platform an along the
standards
Finally, a guard rail is fixed along the standard at a maximum high of 1,0m from
theplatform.
9
b) INDEPENDENT SCAFFOLD: this type of scaffold is created in such way that its self-
supporting and does not depend on the wall for its stability.
PROCEDURE FOR ERECTING AND INDEPENDENT SCAFFOLD
Soleplate is placed in the flat level ground
Base plate is placed on top of the sole plat at the intervals 2.0m or more
depending on the load to be carry by the scaffold
Standards are created vertically on top of the base plate
Ledgers are fixed cross the standards a secured by tying with nails
10
Longitudinal brace is placed at the standards to improve the stability of the
scaffold
The toe boards of a high not less than 1.5m is laid on the platform along
the standard
A guide rail is placed along the standards at a maximum height of 1.0m
above the platform.
2.4) SCAFFOLD TEMINOLOGIES
1) SOLEPLATE: timber boards that support the base plate on the ground
2) BASEPLATE: Square metal plates that are fit into the bottom of the timber
scaffold to spread the load
3) BRACE: poles fixed diagonally stiffen the scaffold by forming a triangle
4) LEDGER: horizontal poles connected to the standards. there are parallel to the
building
5) STANDARDS: the vertical poles that carry the weight of the scaffold to the
ground
6) TRANSOM: cross pieces the rest on the ledgers and support the platform
7) WORKING PLATFORM: the areal that support the material an technicians
8) GUADRAIL: guardrail is attach to the standards above the level of the
platform for safety.
2.5) CLASSIFICATION OF SCAFFOLDING
Scaffolds are classified under: wooden and metal scaffold.
a) WOODEN SCAFFOLD: it is a scaffold in which the entire material is obtained
from wood.
ADVANTAGES OF WOODEN SCAFFOLD
Trees are available to supply the poles
It is usually cheap to buy timber poles than metal tubes
The scaffold parts can be jointed without special fitting
The timber can be re used when not required for scaffolding
It is easy to cut and fit
DISADVANTAGES OF WOODEN SCAFFOLD
It takes longer time to erect
11
The timber may have hidden defect
The putlog scaffold pole leaves holes on the wall
b) METAL SCAFFOLD: this kind of scaffold is constructed with steel or
aluminum connected together by coupling
ADVANTAGES OF METAL SCAFFOLD
It is durable
Quick and simple to erect
Less maintenance
Metal putlog scaffold poles have shortened ends which do not leave holes on the
walls
DISADVANTAGES OF METAL SCAFFOLD
Metal cost is higher than that of timber
The many joints can easily be stolen or lost
The poles must be carefully stored and protected when out of use.
Needs a skill technician for coupling
2.6) FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE CHOICE OF SCAFFOLDING
Security and stability
The ease of mounting and dismounting
The nature of the work to be carry out
The availability of the materials for the scaffold
2.7) GENERAL SAFFTY RULES AND REGULATIONS.
1) To prevent the standards from sinking into the soft ground, a sole plate is provided on
which the base plate rest.
2) The standards are tied to the wall to the building with putlogs on which the platform is
fixed.
3) To make the scaffold rigid, the standards are joined to each other by horizontal
members called ledgers
12
For safety for both technicians and materials on the platform, a toe board and gad rail should
be at a convenient high of 1.5m respectively above the platform.
2.8) ASSIGNMENT
Define a scaffold
Differentiate between dependent an independent scaffold
