OBJECTIVES
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.
UNDERSTAND
Local Area Network (LAN)
- Is a computer network that interconnects
computers within a limited area such as a
residence, school, university campus or
office building that share a common
communications line or wireless link to a
server.
- Computers and other mobile devices use a
LAN connection to share resources such as
printer or network storage.
LAN Settings
- These settings are applied to your home
network. Most routers come with a predefined set of configurations. If this is the case with your router,
you can directly use them.
How to create a Local Area Network
➢ Determine your network needs
1. Count the number of computers you need to hardwire.
- When setting up a LAN, you’ll need to know how many computers will be connecting to
the network via Ethernet. This will determine the number of ports you’ll need.
- If you’ll need to hardwire four computers or less, you’ll just need a router. But if you
have more than four computers, you will need a switch to extend the number of ports
available on router.
2. Decide if you want to create a wireless network
- To connect devices wirelessly, you’ll need a router that can broadcast a wireless
network.
- Network switches do not allow wireless device to connect and can only be used for
hardwired LANs or to extend the number of ports available on the router.
3. Determine if you want all network devices to have internet access.
- A router will be need if you want all your devices to have access to the internet. But if
you don’t want your devices to have a network connection, you can just use a switch.
4. Measure the distances for all hardwired devices.
- Take note that network cables cannot run longer than 100m (328 ft). if you have to run
cable farther than this, you’ll need switches in between.
5. Consider your future needs
- Consider future-proofing to allow for more devices in the future.
2|Pa ge
➢ Setting Up a Basic LAN
1. Gather your network hardware
Equipment/Peripherals Name and Description Picture
Personal Computer (PC) – is a multi- purpose
electronic computer whose size capabilities and
price make it feasible for individual user. PCs are
intended to be operated directly by an end user.
Ethernet Cables – are networking hardware used
to connect and network device to other network
devices or to connect two or more computers to
share printers/scanners. Types of Ethernet cables
include Coaxial cable, Optical fiber cable, and
twisted pair cables.
Router/Hub/Switch – a way stations that control
the traffic of data within a network. A router assigns
automatically a unique IP address to each
computer while switch and hub do not.
Modem – is a device that send, receives, and
translates information from the internet and makes
it available within the Local Area Network.
2. Prepare your workplace
- It must be clean and dry. If necessary, work with your PPE. Do not forget to apply the OHS
policies and procedures.
3. Determine the network layout based on the number of computers you want to connect.
- You’ll need one Ethernet cable for each computer you want to connect to the LAN, as well
as an Ethernet cable to connect the Router to the switch (if applicable).
4. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into your computer.
- Make sure you’re using an Ethernet cable RJ-45, and not a telephone cable
5. Plug the other end of the cable into an open LAN port.
- This can be any open LAN port on either the Router or the switch, depending on your LAN
setup.
6. Reset the Router
- In resetting the router just click the small button on the back of the router using a Pin or
ballpen and wait until all the icons in front of the Router will lights on.
7. Go to browser either Google Chrome or Internet Explorer and type in the default IP
Address.
8. Router log in will appear. Type on default username and password. Usually the default is
“admin” for both username and password but still it depends on the manufacturer.
9. Afterwards, Router User Interface will appear and is now ready for setting up.
10. Click the Network Tab and change your IP address. Save and it will reboot.
11. Go to DHCP Tab, just click the Disable Button and the browser will reboot.
How to see all adapters connected on my computer using CMD.
1. In the search box, type cmd and Enter. A command
prompt will appear.
2. To obtain information about your network adapters and
connections, type ipconfig
and press Enter.
3. To get detailed
information and other
information about each network component, type ipconfig /all
and press Enter.
3|Pa ge
How to get the default IP address of the Router:
1. In the start menu, click the search box and type “command prompt”
2. On the command prompt window, enter “ipconfig” and press Enter.
The numbers indicated in the Default Gateway Section is your Router’s IP Address.
File and Printer Sharing
File Sharing is sharing of or offering access to digital information or resources, including documents,
multimedia (audio/video), graphics, computer programs, images and e-books. It is the private or public
distribution of data or resources in a network with different levels of sharing privileges.
Sharing Resources and Accessing Shared Resources
1. Open My Computer, double-click the C: drive, and create a new folder on the C: drive. Name it
Shared. Right-click the Shared folder and select Properties.
2. In the Shared Properties dialog box, select the Sharing tab.
✓ Notice that the Select the Share This Folder button.
✓ Type the Share Name. Click Apply and the computer you are linked to should be able to view
your Shared folder.
3. Right-click My Network Places, which should be located on your desktop. Select Properties.
4. Right-click your connection (look for a name like Local Area Connection) and again select Properties.
5. In your Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, select File and Print Sharing for Microsoft
Networks and click OK. If you don’t see an option for File and Print Sharing, click Install and select
a service and then click Add. Now select the File and Print Sharing option.
6. Open My Network Places- double-click the icon- and select the Entire Network option under Other
Places at the left of the window. In the main (right-hand) pane, you should see one or more options.
Double-click the Microsoft Windows Network icon.
7. You’re now at the main network screen, where you should see what’s called a workgroup. A
workgroup is a basic group of computers connected to the same Ethernet network. Double-click the
workgroup to see all the computers connected to your Ethernet network.
Printer Sharing
One of the primary reasons that networks were developed was to allow groups of computer users
to share peripheral devices such as printer. Sharing a single printer among a group of users costs much
less than buying a printer for each computer.
Low-cost printers usually require a separate print server to allow network connectivity because
these printers do not have built-in network interfaces. The computer that is connected to the printer can
serve as the print server. Most personal computer operating systems have built-in printer sharing
capability.
Setting up printer sharing is simple with Windows XP. The following steps enable a computer to share
a printer:
Step 1. Choose Start > Printers and Faxes.
Step 2. Right-click the printer, and choose Properties.
Step 3. Click the Sharing tab.
Step 4. Click the Share this printer radio button.
Step 5. Keep or change the share name.
Step 6. Click Apply.
All the computers that use the shared printer must have the correct drivers installed. Drivers for
other operating systems can be installed on the print server.
To connect to the printer from another computer on the network, choose Start > Printers and
Faxes > Add Printer. The Add Printer Wizard appears. Follow the steps using the wizard.
Share a Folder
1. Open the File Explorer
2. Browse to the folder with the content that you want to share
3. Right-click the folder, select the Properties.
4. Click the Sharing tab.
5. Click Share.
6. Type everyone and click add (Folder will be shared to everyone)
7. In the permission level under everyone, choose Read/Write. Click share and done.
8. Click Advanced Sharing then check the box in share this folder. Click permissions then check the
boxes of full control and change under the “Allow” column. (this is to allow changes to happen if
other computers intend to edit or save the files).
9. Click Apply and Ok then close.
4|Pa ge
To configure the Network Sharing Settings;
1. Open the Advance sharing settings window.
2. Turn ON the Network Discovery as well as the File and Printer Sharing.
3. Click Save Changes.
To access the folder in other devices within the network;
1. Open the Network.
2. Click the name of the computer where you wanted to access files.
3. Open the folder then click the file.
4. Rename and save the file in your computer.

REMEMBER
Key Points
• If you have four or less computers that you need to hardwire, you'll just need a router. If
you have more than four, you'll likely need to get a switch to extend the number of ports
available on your router.
• Network switches do not allow wireless devices to connect, and can only be used for
hardwired LANs or to extend the number of ports available to the router.
• If you want all connected devices to have network access, you’ll need Router. If not, you
can use a switch.
• Network cables cannot run longer than 100m. You’ll need switches in between if you have
to run cable father than this.
• The most Router’s default username and password is “admin”
• Configuring the router depends a lot on the manufacturer and the specific model you have.
There is no universal method for configuring a router, as each producer uses a different
approach.
• The LAN settings define what kind of IP Addresses are assigned to your home computers
and whether they are assigned dynamically or statically
