EP Course Project File

The project titled 'Newton’s Disc Colour Combination' aims to demonstrate that white light is composed of seven colors (VIBGYOR) using a circular disc divided into colored segments. When spun, the colors blend together, illustrating the concept of color mixing and persistence of vision. The project has applications in physics education, optical science, and imaging technology.

2. Compass (to draw a circle)
3. Scale
4. Pencil
5. Protractor
6. Sketch pens or colour pencils (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red)
7. Scissors
8. Glue
9. A small stick or pencil (to rotate the disc)
10. Pin or needle (to fix the stick)

Working:

Newton’s Disc demonstrates that white light is made up of seven colours: Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow,
Orange and Red (VIBGYOR).

1. A circular disc is drawn and divided into seven equal parts.

2. Each part is coloured with one of the seven spectrum colours.
3. The disc is fixed to a stick or pencil so that it can rotate freely.
4. When the disc is spun rapidly, the colours blend together due to persistence of vision.
5. As a result, the disc appears white or light grey.

This experiment proves that white light is a combination of many colours.

Applications:

1. Helps understand the composition of white light.

2. Used in physics education to demonstrate colour mixing.
3. Explains the concept used in colour displays and imaging technology.
4. Helps understand optical science and light behaviour.
