A. Basic Course Information
Title: TOEIC Preparation & Score Improvement Program for Education Students
Duration: 12 weeks (3 sessions/week; 2 hours/session) — total 72 contact hours
Target Learners: Undergraduate students in the College of Education (UPHS-IC) preparing for
the biennial institutional TOEIC standardized test.
Class Schedule: Weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Friday — 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM (flexible to
accommodate student timetables and practicum schedules)
B. Rationale
Purpose and significance: The UPHS-IC administers the TOEIC standardized test every two
years. Institutional data and an environmental and needs analysis show that many education
students are only at an average level in the core skills covered by TOEIC (listening and reading
comprehension), and they lack systematic preparation and test-taking strategies. Improving
TOEIC scores will enhance students’ employability, meet institutional benchmarks, and align
with Sustainable Development Goal #4 (Quality Education).
1. Foundational Elements
Environmental Analysis - Educational factors: Large cohorts of teaching majors with varied
English proficiency; limited elective hours dedicated to test preparation; practicum schedules
that reduce daytime availability. - Socio-cultural factors: Many learners use English
academically but not in everyday contexts; motivation is high for employment outcomes but test
anxiety is common. - Economic/logistical: Limited budget for external commercial courses;
access to campus computer lab and internet is available but limited during peak hours.
Needs Analysis (summary) - Target learners: Education students at UPHS-IC scheduled to take
the TOEIC in the upcoming institutional testing cycle. - Present situation: Average performance
in listening and reading; weaknesses in skimming/scanning, time management, vocabulary
breadth, and concentrated listening note-taking. - Target situation: Move a majority of
participants at least one CEFR sublevel (e.g., A2 → B1 or B1 → B2) in TOEIC-equivalent
bands, and increase mean TOEIC scores by a measurable margin (program target: average
increase of 80 points).
