CELT-P Module 3 – Portfolio task

Module X – Developing reading and writing skills in the primary classroom

Portfolio task – Plan, teach and evaluate a reading lesson.
Task focus: Helping learners to develop reading skills by teaching a lesson with pre-
reading, while-reading and post-reading activities.

Procedure

Review the content of Lessons 1, 2 and 3 of Module 3 on reading skills. You can do
this by:
o Going back and looking again at some sections in the lessons in the online module.
o Reading your own notes.
o Talking to other teachers.
o Doing some more reading or research.

Select a text from a coursebook, supplementary book or an authentic source to use with
your class to develop their gist and detailed reading skills. If you use activities from your
coursebook, check that they develop reading skills. If your coursebook suggests listening
to the text, do this after your learners have completed the reading activities. Remember
that the aim of the lesson is gist and detailed comprehension, not reading aloud or
pronunciation practice, so learners should read the text silently.

Plan a lesson which includes the reading text you have chosen (remember to think about
interaction patterns for each stage):
o Prepare a pre-reading activity which will get your learners interested in the topic of
the text.
o Choose vocabulary from the text which you need to pre-teach to help the learners
understand the text, and decide how you will pre-teach it.
o Prepare a gist reading activity for the learners to get a general understanding of the
text.
o Prepare a detailed reading activity to help learners understand most of the text.
o Prepare a post-reading activity to get learners to speak or write about the text.

Complete Part 1 of the Portfolio task template.

o Provide details of the reading text and your class.
o Write the procedures you will follow for each stage.
o Complete the interaction patterns template to show how learners will work at each
stage.

Teach your lesson and reflect on it, then complete Part 2 of the Portfolio task template.
This includes your reflections on using this type of text and activities, action points for
using texts in future lessons and a checklist of evidence you need to submit.

Upload:
o The reading text you chose.
o The tasks you gave learners to do in the lesson.
o The completed Portfolio task template.
