CHAPTER 10

TRAINING AND DOPING IN SPORTS

MEANING AND DEFINITION OF SPORTS TRAINING

Sports training is a systematic and scientific process

through which an athlete is prepared to achieve high
levels of performance in sports. It involves planned
physical, technical, tactical, and psychological
preparation carried out over a long period of time. The
main aim of sports training is to improve an athlete’s
performance by developing physical fitness, skills,
endurance, strength, speed, flexibility, and mental
abilities according to the demands of a particular sport.
Sports training is not random practice; it is
well-organized, progressive, and based on the
principles of training such as overload, progression,
and recovery.
According to Martin, sports training is defined as “a
long-term, systematic process of preparation of
sportsmen, based on scientific principles, to achieve
maximum performance.” This definition highlights that
sports training is continuous, planned, and
goal-oriented, focusing on peak performance at the
right time. Thus, sports training plays a vital role in
enhancing performance, preventing injuries, and
ensuring overall development of an athlete in physical
education and competitive sports.

CONCEPT OF SPORTS TRAINING

The concept of sports training is based on the idea of

preparing an athlete in a planned, systematic, and
scientific manner to achieve the best possible
performance in a specific sport. Sports training focuses
on the overall development of an athlete by improving
physical fitness, technical skills, tactical understanding,
and psychological strength. It is a continuous and
long-term process that involves regular practice, proper
rest, and gradual increase in training load according to
the athlete’s age, ability, and level of performance. The
main objective of sports training is to help an athlete
reach peak performance at the right time.
Sports training is guided by well-established principles
such as individual differences, overload, progression,
specificity, and recovery. These principles ensure that
training is safe, effective, and suited to the needs of
each athlete. The concept also emphasizes the
importance of discipline, consistency, and scientific
planning to avoid overtraining and injuries. In physical
education and sports, the concept of sports training
helps coaches and teachers design appropriate training
programs that enhance performance, improve fitness,
and promote long-term athletic development.

OBJECTIVES OF SPORTS TRAINING

The main objective of sports training is to improve an

athlete’s overall performance by developing physical
fitness, technical skills, tactical understanding, and
psychological strength. Through systematic and
scientific training, an athlete’s strength, speed,
endurance, flexibility, and coordination are enhanced
according to the requirements of a particular sport.
Sports training also aims to improve motor skills,
efficiency of movements, and consistency in
performance, enabling the athlete to perform at a
higher level during practice and competition.
Another important objective of sports training is to
prepare the athlete mentally and emotionally to handle
competitive pressure and challenging situations.
Training helps in building confidence, discipline,
determination, and stress management skills. It also
aims to prevent injuries by strengthening the body and
improving flexibility, posture, and recovery ability.
Overall, the objectives of sports training focus on
achieving peak performance, maintaining long-term
fitness, and ensuring balanced physical and
psychological development of the athlete.

PRINCIPLES OF SPORTS TRAINING

Principle of Individual Differences

The principle of individual differences states that every
athlete is unique in terms of age, gender, physical
capacity, skill level, and psychological makeup.
Therefore, the training program should be designed
according to the individual needs and abilities of the
athlete. A training load suitable for one athlete may not
be appropriate for another, so personal planning is
essential to achieve maximum performance and avoid
injuries.
Principle of Overload
The principle of overload means that for improvement
to take place, the body must be exposed to a workload
greater than its normal capacity. This increased load
can be in the form of higher intensity, longer duration,
or greater frequency of training. Overload should be
applied gradually and scientifically so that the body
adapts positively without causing fatigue or injury.
Principle of Progression
Progression refers to the gradual increase in training
load as the athlete’s fitness level improves. Sudden
increases in workload can lead to overtraining or injury.
By following proper progression, athletes can
continuously improve their performance in a safe and
effective manner.
Principle of Specificity
According to the principle of specificity, training should
be specific to the sport, skill, and energy system
involved. For example, a sprinter should focus more on
speed and explosive strength, while a marathon runner
should focus on endurance. Sport-specific training
leads to better skill development and performance
improvement.
Principle of Recovery
The principle of recovery emphasizes the importance
of adequate rest and recovery between training
sessions. Proper recovery helps the body repair
tissues, regain energy, and adapt to training stress.
Without sufficient recovery, performance may decline
and the risk of injury increases

TYPES OF METHODS OF WARMING UP

Warming-up can be explained through different

methods, each serving a specific purpose in preparing
the body and mind for physical activity. These methods
help increase body temperature, improve blood
circulation, enhance flexibility, and reduce the risk of
injury.
The general warming-up method involves simple,
whole-body movements that gradually raise the heart
rate and body temperature. Activities such as slow
jogging, brisk walking, skipping, or light cycling are
commonly used. This method prepares all major
muscle groups and is usually performed at the
beginning of any physical activity to get the body into
an active state.
The specific warming-up method focuses on
movements related to the particular sport or activity that
will follow. For example, a football player may practice
light passing, dribbling, and short sprints, while a
basketball player may do shooting and dribbling drills.
This method helps the muscles and joints adjust to the
exact movements required in the game or event.
The passive warming-up method increases body
temperature without physical movement. It includes
methods such as hot showers, massage, steam baths,
or wearing extra clothing. Although it raises muscle
temperature, it does not improve coordination or
neuromuscular readiness, so it is usually combined
with active warming-up.
The active warming-up method involves physical
exercises performed by the athlete to warm the
muscles. It includes stretching, mobility exercises,
calisthenics, and light aerobic activities. This method is
the most commonly used because it improves muscle
elasticity, joint mobility, and mental readiness.
The dynamic warming-up method uses controlled,
rhythmic movements that take the joints through their
full range of motion. Exercises such as leg swings, arm
circles, lunges, and torso rotations are included.
Dynamic warming-up is especially effective before
sports performance as it improves strength, speed, and
coordination.
The static stretching method, though less preferred
before intense activity, involves holding a stretch for a
short duration to improve flexibility. It is generally
recommended after warming-up or at the end of activity
rather than as the main method before competition.

IMPORTANCE OF WARM UP

Warm-up plays a very important role in physical

education and sports as it prepares the body and mind
for physical activity. A proper warm-up gradually
increases body temperature and improves blood
circulation, which helps the muscles receive more
oxygen and nutrients. This makes the muscles more
flexible and ready for movement, reducing stiffness in
the body.
One of the main importance of warm-up is prevention
of injuries. When muscles, joints, ligaments, and
tendons are properly warmed, the risk of strains,
sprains, and muscle tears is greatly reduced. Warm-up
prepares the joints for smooth movement and protects
the body from sudden stress during vigorous exercise
or sports activities.
Warm-up also improves physical performance. It
enhances muscle coordination, balance, speed, and
strength by activating the nervous system. Athletes are
able to perform skills more efficiently and with better
control when the body is properly warmed up. This
leads to improved performance in sports and physical
activities.
Another important aspect of warm-up is mental
preparation. It helps athletes focus, build confidence,
and get psychologically ready for training or
competition. Warm-up allows players to shift from a
resting state to an active state, improving concentration
and reaction time.
Warm-up also helps in better flexibility and range of
motion of joints. As muscles become elastic,
movements can be performed more freely and
effectively. This supports correct posture and efficient
movement patterns during exercise.
In conclusion, warm-up is essential for safe
participation in physical activities. It prepares the body
physically and mentally, reduces the chances of injury,
enhances performance, and ensures smooth
functioning of the muscles and joints. For these
reasons, warm-up should never be skipped before any
physical activity

SKILL TECHNIQUE TACTICS AND STRATEGIES

Skill

Skill refers to the ability of a player to perform a

movement or action efficiently and accurately. It is
developed through practice and experience.
Points:
●Helps in accurate and efficient performance of
movements

●Improves coordination, balance, and control

●Developed through regular practice and training

●Examples: dribbling in football, shooting in

basketball, serving in volleyball

Technique
Technique is the correct and scientific way of
performing a skill. It focuses on body position,
movement pattern, and use of muscles.
Points:
●Ensures correct execution of skills

●Improves efficiency and performance

●Reduces wastage of energy

●Helps in preventing injuries

●Example: correct kicking technique in football

Tactics

Tactics are planned actions used by players or teams

during a game to gain advantage over opponents. They
are short-term and situation-based.
Points:
●Applied during competition

competition to achieve overall success. They guide the
use of skills, techniques, and tactics.

CONCEPT OF DOPING

Doping refers to the use of prohibited substances

or methods by athletes to enhance sports performance
in an unfair and unethical manner. These substances
are banned by sports authorities such as the World
Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because they give
artificial advantage, harm the athlete’s health, and
violate the spirit of fair play. Doping may include the
use of stimulants, anabolic steroids, hormones, or
blood doping techniques to increase strength,
endurance, or recovery. The main objective of doping is
to improve performance beyond natural ability, which
goes against sports ethics and rules.

Advantages of Doping

●Increases muscle strength and power

●Enhances endurance and stamina

●Reduces fatigue and speeds up recovery

●Improves focus and aggression during

performance

(Note: These advantages are temporary and unethical.)

Disadvantages of Doping

●Causes serious health problems such as heart

disease, liver damage, and hormonal imbalance
●Leads to psychological issues like aggression,
anxiety, and depression

●Can result in addiction and long-term physical

damage

●Leads to disqualification, bans, and loss of medals

●Damages the image of the athlete and the spirit of

sportsmanship

Conclusion

Although doping may provide short-term performance

benefits, its harmful effects on health, career, and
ethics far outweigh any advantage. Therefore, doping is
strictly prohibited, and athletes are encouraged to
achieve success through proper training, nutrition, and
fair play.
