G. Geotechnical Evaluation – Allowable Bearing Capacity

Calculation

Location: Pao Norte, City of San Fernando, La Union

Soil Classification: Clayey Soil (CL, CH, ML, or MH)

Reference: National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015

Table 304-1 – Allowable Foundation and Lateral Pressure

(Presumed Bearing Values)

1. Soil Bearing Capacity Basis

According to Table 304-1, the base allowable foundation

pressure for clayey soils (including clay, sandy clay, silty

clay, and clayey silt – classified as CL, CH, ML, or MH) is:

Allowable Bearing Capacity: 50 kPa

This base value applies to footings with a minimum width

of 300 mm and minimum depth of 300 mm into natural

grade.

2. Foundation Details (As Proposed)

Parameter Value

3.00
Footing Width
meters

Depth from Ground Surface to Base of 2.50

Footing meters

Thickness of Footing 0.65

Parameter Value

meters

3. Code-Permitted Adjustments

In accordance with code provisions, the allowable bearing

capacity may be increased by 20% for each additional

300 mm of footing width and/or depth, up to a

maximum of 3 times the base value.

a. Width Adjustment:

 Increase from 0.30 m to 3.00 m → +2.80 m.

 Increments: 2.80 m ÷ 0.30 m = 9.33

 Bearing increase from width: 9.33 × 20% = 186.67%

b. Depth Adjustment:

 Increase from 0.30 m to 2.50 m → +2.20 m.

 Increments: 2.20 m ÷ 0.30 m = 7.33

 Bearing increase from depth: 7.33 × 20% = 146.67%

c. Total Calculated Increase:

 Combined increase: 186.67% + 146.67% = 333.35%

 Adjusted bearing:

50 kPa∗( 1+3.335 )=216.7 kPa

d. Code-Imposed Limit:

The maximum allowable value shall not exceed 3× the

base value:

3∗50=150 kPa
4. Final Allowable Bearing Capacity

Allowable
Condition
Pressure

Calculated Value (Based on

216.7 kPa
Dimensions)

Code-Imposed Maximum Limit 150.0 kPa

Recommended Design Value 150.0 kPa

5. Notes

 For design cases involving wind or earthquake loads,

the code allows a one-third increase in allowable

pressure. However, this is still subject to the 150 kPa

cap.

 The values above assume that actual soil conditions

conform to the assumed classification (CL, CH, ML, or

MH). Site-specific geotechnical testing is recommended

to confirm.
