Project: Interview with a Mature Christian

I interviewed my church pastor, and I went to ask them four different questions:
what makes a church a church? Why are there so many denominations around
today? What is the role of the Holy spirit in the church today? The early Church
sold their possessions and gave money to the poor. Do you think Christians today
share their passion?

I have learnt a lot from the response from my church pastor regarding the
questions I asked him. I used to think that the church was just separate groups of
people all coming together to worship and listen to preaching every Sunday in a
big building. Now, after asking my church pastor, what makes a church a church,
I learn that the church is made up of people, who are representing the body of
Christ, not just a building. We are meant to be all one body but have different
roles in the church. “We are one body in Christ…we all have our different roles to
play”. Jesus is the centre of everything, everything the church says, does and
sings is all for Jesus and to glorify him and build his kingdom in heaven and on
earth through the church. I was very interested when I asked my church pastor
why there were so many denominations. The reply was that denominations were
developed over centuries because of so many ways of viewing faith. I learnt that
some were crazy worship, some were peaceful and quiet church services and
others still followed traditional practices. These different denominations were all
because of different interpretations of what they value. Some examples that I
learnt about were Baptist, Methodists, Presbyterians and much more but all
simply different values and priorities but all share the same core beliefs. Though
our discussion, I got to learn more about the real role of the holy spirit in the
church. Holy spirit is alive and active today while inspiring, challenging, gifting
believers while renewing the church. Some gifts of the holy spirit can include
gifts of healing, gifts of teaching, gifts of hospitality and service. Holy spirit is in
the church empower and guide the church on the right path. I wonder what the
church would look like if the holy spirit was not present and working, would evil
slowly take over the church? Another important part in church is generosity
which links to the question: should Christians sell their possessions and give
money like the early church? From what I learnt, selling of everything you have is
not necessary in the church today but generosity is encouraged. As humans, we
often have more than we need and help those in need less, as it says in the
bible, “it is more blessed to give than receive”, so as a Christian sharing and
generosity reflect compassion and other values. We have to be prepared to share
the blessings of God with other people who are in need.

If I had a follow up discussion with my church pastor again, 3 questions I would


ask him would probably be: On what basis can someone join a church? Because I
want to learn his perspective on who would they allow in the church, maybe
everyone to resemble Jesus’ character. Another question would be: what would
you like to see changed in the church today? And lastly, The early Church saw
spiritual gifts used to help it grow. What do you think of spiritual gifts in the
church today? – to expand on the role of holy spirit question.
