Problem 1: Straight Plate Girder Bridge
The figures show plan, elevation, and two cross sections of a steel bridge with the shown
spans and widths. The railway bridge floor (option 1) consists of a 50 cm ballast layer on top
of a 25 cm RC slab. The deck slab is carried on five main plate girders spaced each 3.10 m.
The roadway bridge floor (options 2) consists of a 10 cm wearing surface on top of a 25 cm
RC slab. The deck slab is carried on five main plate girders spaced at 3.10 m. Design shall be
performed according to the following Egyptian Codes: 1500 12400 1500
1- ECP # 201: Egyptian Code of Practice for Loads and Forces on Structures and
Buildings (2019 Edition)
2- ECP # 205: Egyptian Code of Practice for Steel Construction and Bridges
(Allowable Stress Design) 4@3100=12400
Material of construction is Structural Steel Grade St 52 according to ES 260.
Requirements: CROSS SECTION OF ROADWAY BRIDGE (Option 2)
1.2 Compute numerically using a two-dimensional grillage model the envelopes of
maximum straining actions on the main girders stated in question 1. Use a structural
analysis software of your choice, e.g., SAP2000, STAAD PRO, CSIBridge,
MIDAS,….. Make a comparison between the results of one-dimensional model and
two-dimensional model.

1- Open CSI Bridge
2-Switch to menu mode
File -> Setting -> menu
3-Create a new model
File -> New Model -> more -> Blank
4- Define Sections
Components -> Section Properties -> Frame Sections -> Add New Property
We want to define 3 frame sections:
1-Main Girder section
2-Cross Frame section
3- Transverse section (Act as the deck)
For Main Girder & Cross Frame For Transverse Section
We want to define 3 frame sections:

5- Define Grids
Right click -> Edit grid data -> Modify / Show system
We have 7 Grids in X Direction & 7 Grids in Y Direction
Press 7 times
Press 7 times
Press 1 time
Adjust Grid Spacings
In X-direction -> Axes coordinates are: 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36
In Y-direction -> Axes coordinates are: 0, 1.5, 4.6, 7.7, 10.8, 13.9, 15.4
6- Draw
set XY view -> Draw Frame / Cable
If Draw menu is hidden, From Options menu select Enable Advanced
Menus
Start drawing transverse section
Set XY plane offset to 0.5
Draw between these 2 points
Start drawing transverse section
Select the drawn frame section and press (Ctrl + R) to replicate this frame along the entire span of
the bridge
Then draw Main Girders
Then select the drawn frame section and press (Ctrl + R) to replicate this frame (dy=-3.1, Number
= 4)
Draw between these 2 points
Then draw Cross Frames
Then select the drawn frame section and press (Ctrl + R) to replicate this frame (dx=6, Number
= 6)
Draw between these 2 points
7-Add Supports
Select the ends of the Main Girders -> Assign -> Joint -> Restraint -> Hinge
8-Add Dead Loads
Loads -> Load Pattern
8-Add Loads
1- Select -> Select -> Properties -> Frame Sections -> Transverse Sections
2- Assign -> Frame Loads -> Distributed
