Report

South Africa's renewable energy primarily consists of bio energy (83%) and solar energy (15%), with a total increase of 8944 MegaWatts since 2015. The country aims for solar power to reach 8400MWh by 2030, while currently, 75% of its energy supply relies on coal and gas. Despite a steady access to electricity, the overall renewable energy share has decreased from 7% in 2015 to 6% in 2020, indicating a continued dependence on fossil fuels.

RENEWABLE ENERGY OF SOUTH AFRICA

The Major Energy of South Africa are

1)Bio Energy (83%)

2)Solar Energy (15%)

3)Hydro Electric (2%)

4)Wind Energy (0%)

As compare to 2015 the Renewable

Energy increases by 8944 MegaWatts

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
DISTRIBUTION IN
SOUTH AFRICA

1)SOLAR POWER Supposed TO

Reach 8400MWH BY 2030

2) The annual 24 Hours solar Global

Radiation Is 220W/m^2

3)Wind farm supplies Eskom 132kV grid line and

Generates 460 000 MWh per year
4) Concentrated solar: 500 MW. Utility-scale solar PV: 2,286 MW
& Wind (Eskom plus Independent Power Producers): 3,443 MW
5))Total Renewable Energy 6280MW including solar wind and other

ENERGY PROFILE
As per the report of “INTERNATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY AGENCY”

Real GDP growth rate from 2015 to 2022 is 3.9%. In 2022 South Africa has the GDP per capita is
13.5 USD’000s 2017 ppp GDP per capita in 2020 is lowest due to Covid 19.

The energy intensity is 7.0 by 2022 in South Africa

In South Africa Access to electricity(%population) from 2015 to 2019 remains constant (Approx
85%) And from 2019 to 2020 is increases linearly upto 89.3% and from 2020 to till now it remains
constant approximately 89% .

The Access to clean cooking(%population) is 81 -88% increasing from 2015 to 2021 linearly

In South Africa The Percentage of “The Total Final Energy Consumption” remains constant
approximately (12%) as compare to other energy from 2015 to 2021 and after that its falls down
tends to (1%) and now it’s increases a little bit, because of it a country which is depending
upon fossil fuel.

As per the Statistical Data of IRENA (“International Renewable Energy Agency”)

From the above graph

2nd Graph The Average Energy required per person increases from 2015 to 2021 is from
61W/person to 171.6W/person for Renewable Energy purpose.

3rd Graph The Average Energy of Urban and Rural in 2015,2016,2017,2018,2019,2020 and 2021 are
19.1, 19.1, 19.4, 19.5, 19.7 and 19.8 respectively.

So The total energy required in Urban places are more than rural place, Urban places bar graph is
shown by red bar and Rural places bar graph is shown by yellow bar.

Total Energy supply In south Africa in 2022 is depending upon Coal and Gas about 75%

And 14% is depended upon Oil so South Africa Is also depended upon the Fossil Fuel as compare to
Other countries.

From The Total Energy Supplied 6% is supplied from Renewable Energy.

3% is energy supplied from gas

2% is supplied from Nuclear energy

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Major Renewable Energy of South Africa are

Bio Energy(83%), Solar Energy(14%),Hydro Energy(%).

So basically For case of renewable energy south Africa is depending upon “BIO ENERGY” and “SOLAR
ENERGY”

TOTAL ENERGY SUPPLY 2015 2020

Non Renewable(TeraJoule ) 5 334 037 5 187 258
Renewable (TJ) 386951 317462
Total (TJ) 5720988 5504720
Renewable energy share(%) 7 6

So The Growth In Total Energy(TES) Supply for

Non Renewable from 2015-2020 = -2.8% Renewable 2015-2020= -18.5%

Non Renewable from 2019-2020=-7.1% renwable 2019-2020= -20.5

So Total Energy Growth rate is -3.8% in 2015-2020 & -7.9% in 2019-2020

PRIMARY ENERGY TRADE 2015 2020

Imports (% of Supply) 26 22
Exports(% of Production) 32 30

CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY

As Per The Report Of “INTERNATION RENEWABLE ENERGY AGENCY”

From The Above Graph It is Shown That

1)Maximum Energy from Renewable Sources is consumed from Bio Energy(88%)

2) 11% of Electricity is consumed

3) 1-2% of Solar Energy is consumed

Nowadays A lot of Industry is investing money For south Africa Solar Power Plant Electricity
Generation Project , So by 2030 It has the chances to produce 8400MWh of electricity Production in
South Africa

From 2nd PIE CHART

The Distribution of Energy consumption for different sector is shown

1)INDUSTRY 19%

2)HOUSEHOLDS 40%

3) Others 41%

So in future purpose the government has to take an initative to make Industry Energy consumption
ny renewable sources more than 25% .

CONSUMPTION BY SECTOR 2015 2020

Industry(Tera Joule) 159917 69401
Households 16675 143960
Transport 298 500

In Industry Huge Amount Of Energy required at an instant , Which may not be full filled by
Renewable Energy. To increase Energy A large solar power plant, Wind plant, Bio Energy plant
required which will be sufficient to supply energy for Industry.
