LESSON 3: VISUALIZNG, REPRESENTING, AND CONVERTING THE MEASURES USING SECOND,
MINUTES, AND HOURS
CONTENT STANDARD:
The learners demonstrate understanding of conversion of time, linear, mass, and
capacity measures and area of square and rectangle
PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner is able to apply knowledge of conversion of time, linear, mass and
capacity measures and area of rectangle and square n mathematical problems and
real-life situations.
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
Visualize, represents, and converts time measure:
a. From seconds to minutes, minutes to hours, and hours to a day and vice versa.
b. Days to week, month, and year and vice versa.
c. Weeks to months and year and vice versa
d. Months to year and vice and vice versa
Visualizes, and represents, and converts common units of measure from larger to
smaller unit and vice versa: meter and centimetre, kilogram and gram, liter and
millilitre.
Essential Concepts and Terminologies:
The most common units of time are the second, minute, hour, and day.
The clock is utilized to determine the second, minute and hour. It has two hands that
move in a clockwise direction. The short hand is hour hand and the long hand is the
minute hand.
To convert a bigger unit of time to a smaller unit, we us multiplication.
T convert a smaller unit of time to a bigger unit, we use division.

DISCUSSION
Kathleen wakes up at four-thirty in the morning during school days.
This is her routine from Monday to Friday to prepare herself for her classes.
How do we show four-thirty using the clock?
Let us look at the clock!
What does the short hand tell?
What does the long hand tell?
How do the long and short hands move?

The start hand of the clock tells the hour. It is named the
hour hand. If it points at 4, we read number as 4, If it
points at 6, we read it as 6 and so on.
The long hand of the clock tells the minutes. It is named
the minute hand. We read the minute hand by 5’s. If the
long hand points at 3, we read it as 15, if it points at 4, we
read it as 20 and so on.
Let us go back to the clock. The short hand between 4 and 5 and the long hand points at 6,
therefore, the time is four-thirty. Four-thirty is written as 4:30.
Additionally, a.m. is used to tell time between 12:00 midnight and 12:00 noon. And to tell
time between 12:00 noon and 12:00 midnight, we use p.m.
Example 1
This clock shows 9:00. We read the time as “Nine o”

This clock shows 12:50. We read the time “twelve-thirty”
Elapsed Time
Rose is at the airport waiting to check-in for the airplane going to Iloilo. It is 6:40 a.m.
The check-in is due to start 7:30 a.m. How long will she have to wait in the waiting area of the
airport?
Let us find out how long rose will be staying in the airport’s waiting area.
From 6:40 to 7:00 is 20 minutes
From 7:00 to 7:30 is 30 minutes
Therefore, Rose will have to wait for 50 minutes.
Units of Time
These are some of the units utilized to measure time.
1 minute (min) = 60 seconds (s)
1 Hour (h) = 60 minutes (min)
1 Day (d) = 24 hour (h)
One unit of time can be converted to another unit. To convert bigger unit of time measure
to a smaller unit, use multiplication.

Example 2
3 hours=___________minutes
How many minutes in 1 hour? 60
3x60=180
Then, 3 h=180 min.
Example 3
To convert a smaller unit of time measure to a bigger unit, use division.
420 seconds=_________minutes
How many seconds in 1 minutes? 60
420 ÷ 60 = 7
Then, 420 s = 7 min.
Example 4
How many days are there in 144 hours?
How many hours in 1 day? 24
144 ÷24 = 6
Then, 144 h = 6 d.
